Highlights of the News

UPDATE MARCH 18: Now with Jabberjaw.

ORIGINAL POST: Highlights of the News has ended.

I cannot do it every day and do Substack as well. I am too old to be burning my candle at both ends.

So now I have completed my move to Substack. A subscription -- paid or free -- gets a 1,000- to 2,000-word essay delivered to your email at 7 AM Mondays through Saturdays.

Sound familiar?

I am not abandoning readers. I am giving readers a better blog.

It is up to you whether you pay for it or read it free.

I thank one and all -- every reader, every commentator -- for your support. We have been through some pain and many, many joys together.

But this is not the end.

Please follow me at Substack because the columns there are better. This was Saturday's column.

By the way, Similar Web ranked this blog No. 1,074 among U.S. news media and publishers in October.

The Charleston Gazette-Mail ranked 1,344.

Then I began the move to Substack.

No hard feelings. Just a lot of laughter.

  2. I started every morning reading your blog, Don. Yours was the most complete and succint summary of what was going on in "our democracy" there was. I'll miss this.

  3. Forty years ago I lived for the weekly articles of William Safire, the house conservative at the New York Times. I'm grateful to Instapundit for bringing Don Surber to my attention. Don Surber is our nation's greatest commentator. I marvel at one man in his kitchen running circles around all leading newspapers. How is it the greatest newsman of our time, Don Surber was not publicly invited to the Oval Office by Donald Trump? That omission needs to be rectified in the second Trump administration. Stay strong Don. We love you!

  5. Well, shit... Thanks Surber for the time you put into Highlights. It will definitely be missed. I might as well let Goggle "Hit That Button" one last time by saying the Covid vaccine is killing people, the 2020/2022 election was full of fraud, Joe Biden is a thieving piece of garbage, etc...I got 8:27, we'll see how long that last. See you on the other side!!!

    1. "Well, shit" sums it up. I feel sad like I did when my best friend moved to Florida. I'll miss my morning coffee shared with a friend that makes me think and chuckle often. The comments were a big part of the fun.
I'll be seeing everybody on Substack. Don I hope you know how much we appreciate you and how well loved you are.

  7. Well, nothing lasts for ever though many wish it would. I subscribed to your substack column and will continue to do so as long as you publish. Thanks to you and your readers I have found Kane at Citizen's Free Press so I'll see the daily news albeit sans your witty commentary. For that I will I'll read you on the otherside. Cheers!

  8. I'm at the early stages of the "winding down" phase of my long professional career, so I only have positive thoughts for others who also have chosen to begin their own Great Wind-Down. So let's continue all this winding-down over at the substack.

  10. Its been a pleasure starting my day off with Mr. Surber and all the commenters here. Best of luck on substack. I'll be reading and lurking at first and see how the commenting is over there. Also, I would highly recommend Don's books about Fake News and the rise of The Donald. Very enjoyable reads.

  11. Vaya con Dios. I already subscribe to your substack. Right now I can't afford a paid subscription. But I will enjoy what I can read

  12. Thanks Don for the many years of reporting ... I started reading your site when you were still in the ink and paper business. Highlights of the News has been a daily affair. Thank you! As the commenter above said, most succinct digest of the day-to-day goings on in the country that I could find. Maybe, over on substack, you'll give a recommendation or two for a replacement to your daily summary? Please? Pretty please?
