I was in a bubble this year. Tuesday's election busted it.
Hope is the thing with feathers. We were plucked.
We can talk about cheating and the fix being in and mail-in votes. We can go on and on about the deep state and the media. We can spend months in denial but the fact is, Americans do not want Donald John Trump to be their president.
He did not save the Republican Party. He spent it.
Ira Stoll was cold in his assessment of the election.
He wrote, "Donald Trump is a drag in a general election in purple states.
"In Georgia, Republican Governor Brian Kemp, who Trump doesn't like, won about 53% of the vote, while Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker, who Trump likes, was at 48% or 49% of the vote. Likewise, in New Hampshire, Governor Chris Sununu, who has distanced himself from Trump, won with about 57% of the vote, while Republican Senate candidate Dan Bolduc, a Trump fan, attracted only about 44% of the vote. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, the Republican success story of the night, won reelection with roughly 59% of the vote despite being denounced by Trump as Ron De Sanctimonious.
"There are some outliers—J.D. Vance won the Ohio Senate race despite being allied with Trump—but overall, it was not a good night for Trump. Perhaps this realization will make Republican primary voters think twice before choosing Trump-allied candidates, or Trump himself, in primaries in 2024."
The truth is not a warm puppy. It often is a snowman standing on a glacier. This is one of those times.
Governors Kemp, Sununu and DeSantis showed how Tuesday would have gone for Republicans without Trump. Republicans needed to gain 5 House seats. DeSantis delivered 4.
Dr. Oz showed how it went with Trump. That's how poisonous he has become in purple America. We, his fans, see the good in him and the evil in his enemies. But the majority doesn't and never will. It is a sale that cannot be made. There will be no second term from The Donald.
It breaks my heart to see this. I wrote three books on the man. Looking for someone else -- likely DeSantis -- will cost me readers. As I said about the covid vaccine, you do you.
But Trump failed. He cost America the red tsunami we need to rein in Democrats.
Harris Rigby at Not the Bee wrote, "A red wave turned into a purple puddle, thanks to an orange man."
I really wanted Trump to come back but I just don't see it. He's damaged goods, done in by Barack Obama and the FBI and the Washington media. Chuck Schumer warned Trump on TV two weeks before his inauguration, "You take on the intelligence community? They have six ways from Sunday of getting back at you."
That is evil. That is unfair. That is the world we live in, for like Sarah Palin, our enemies turned Trump into an albatross. He came so close to bringing Washington down that they now will destroy him, ruin his children and salt his fields because he threatened them. He came ever so close.
Palin's comeback in Alaska was doomed from the start. All she did was flip that state's congressional seat blue. Nick Begich, the other Republican in the race, would have defeated the Democrat but Palin wanted to be Teddy Roosevelt. Excuse me, but TR turned the White House over to Wilson and we wound up with the Federal Reserve and World War I.

You learn from history. United we stand. Divided we wind up with a Democrat president and Congress.
Everyone makes mistakes. I made one this year. You can either learn from your mistakes or you can keep making the same mistake over and over again.
Other bloggers will tell you what you want to hear. I will tell you what you need to know. I was disappointed last night and thought it was a cheat. I woke up this morning and realized I was wrong.
Wake up.
The good news is Trump softened the field.
The better news is Florida is now redder than any state, including West Virginia.

He won Osceola County, home to a huge Puerto Rican population, by 7 points; Trump lost Osceola by double digits in 2020. DeSantis won Miami-Dade County by 11 points; Trump lost by 30% there in 2020. And DeSantis won deep blue Palm Beach County by 3 points. So if you keep telling yourself that “Only Trump” can win, you’ll be wrong.

More states need to do like Florida did, no mail in ballots, no same day registration, photo ID. It doesn't close all the holes, but it sure plugs a few of them and makes it more difficult to cheat.

ReplyDeleteI see "reality" as stolen elections, which since 2020 was decisively proven through the efforts of scores of patriots. I can trace those stolen elections, i.e. the same tactics and results, back to 2018, 2016 (Hillary was assured the fix was in, but Trump's voters overwhelmed their fraud plans), 2012, and even as far back as 2010 (if you factor in what Obama's IRS did to the "Tea Party" movement). The GOP did very little substantively, in my opinion, to change things since 2020. Indeed, with the government closely held by the Democrats and Biden fully willing to deploy the Federal police services and even armed forces, in a partisan to further the Democrat's steal machine, and punish his enemies, the GOP-e could do little even if they wanted too. And, McConnell and McCarthy, and the senior GOP Senators and House leadership, definitely DID NOT want to be involved in anyway that could be construed with "insurrection 2.0" by the Democrats and their national media.
DeSantis may be a strong leader, may be a nice guy good as gold, but if you think he'll have a different fate than Trump, you're still, living in a world of hope over reality. The enemy does not rest. The enemy does not quit. They aren't brilliant, but they are smart enough to change tactics. And, they are Marxist enough to ruthlessly deploy government police power.
I won't hold your opinions against you Don, but you missed with your aim. You're running from reality, holding Trump accountable, rather than the corrupt, degenerate, anti-American, Constitution and law defying "Uniparty". I'm not a Trumpist, nor a DeSantis supporter. I'm a realist, a Christian conservative and military veteran that KNOWS from history and some personal experience, that elections will never solve the problem of corrupt elections. There is no political way out of a problem created by lawless, illegitimate parties, who are willing to act in defiance of the plain words of the US Constitution.
This election isn't the end of democracy, of Trump, of the populist nationalist movement, or of the GOP. It's the beginning of something else, inevitable and violent, because an armed, free people cannot be dominated by authoritarians, socialists and/or oligarchs. All that's required is the perfect catalyst, to propel everything out of their control.

DeleteCan’t disagree with anything you’ve said. That being said, I think Ron makes a better candidate because of his ability to articulate the issues. You can’t deny that he has put more conservative principles into law than any other Republican Governor and he has done so with the same screeching media and democratic establishment. The difference to me is that he is calculated and articulate. He has strategic patience and an ability to explain his rationale to voters. The results are clear.

Desantis is being inflated and "fortified" by the same people who blocked Trumps reelection in 2020--because it will take a strong Republican to block Trump in 2024. But if he elected, he will be owned by them. And that may happen. Our politics are utterly corrupt.
On the bright side, Ron Desantis is not a senile or stroke-addled idiot. The fixers know that they cannot use such to stop Trump amongst Republicans the way they used Biden amongst Democrats to stop Bernie Sanders.

DeSantis really has no background or expertise in finance, and if he were President I fear he would be easily manipulated to take steps that would actually make things worse and harm America.
In the coming financial crisis, I would much rather have Trump at the helm--head of his class at Wharton; highly experienced and successful billionaire businessman for decades, including savvy international business experience; a man who "wrote the book" on the Art of the Deal; a man who held a national masterclass in meritocratic capitalism through his show " The Apprentice"; and above all, "a very stable genius"!
I think Trump was born to help this country, and he still has a H-U-G-E amount to give. What I'd love best is to see Trump and DeSantis genuinely bond into a superb team--the "Dynamic Duo"! Trump especially has borne the brunt of massive hatred directed at him. How strengthening it could be for both men to partner up. What a gift that would be to America. It's not Trump's usual style, but there could be some real benefits in truly joining forces.

DeleteThere are several things goin on here, I can’t really sort it all out. First, most people I know say they love Trump’s policies and they way he governed, but don’t want him to run again, as he has just too much baggage. As Don says, it’s not fair, he was attacked by a bipartisan coalition of the deep state because he threatened them. Next, DeSantis may or may not be able/willing to take on the deep state. Sundance has certainly tagged him as being owned by the establishment. Of course we have democrat vote cheating too, but we also have an under-30 generation that is a product of government school indoctrination. Don is not a never Trumper, neither am I. I’d say we’re both we-wish-it-could-be-Trump-but-it-won’t-happen. DeSantis is probably better than most RINOs, but the ruling class will allow him (or anyone else) to win only if he agrees to be one of them. We had a chance with Trump to make a course correction, but the powers of evil won, and they will never allow themselves to be threatened like that again. The USA will never be what it was. I don’t know what it will become, I suppose we will muddle along for a while. I’m glad I’m in my 60s, but I weep for my grandkids.

Sadly, Trump now is working for himself and not his loyal supporters. He accomplished many great things, but he also failed where it could have been otherwise. The pandemic response, bad personnel decisions, the border, failing to outsmart his foes and allowing the 2020 defeat to happen.

Instead he irritates them, whether rightly or wrongly, their response is a fact, and they vote too. The American people and our system and way of life needs defending in a way Trump is unable to do any longer. If we truly love America we must recognize this reality, and not sacrifice the best available outcomes for our most fervently wished but unattainable outcomes.

DeSantis is not the answer like your gone-wobbly dream holds. If Trump graciously backs down, throws his weight behind him, and campaigns vigorously DeSantis will still lose.
Because the cheating works. There isn't another GOP president unless he's wholly owned before hand. No more mail-in ballots, no more early voting, no more same day registration.

DeleteWell, lets examine this a bit. Are the political class threatened by Trump and what he represents? Yes.
DeleteDid Trump expose them for what they are? Yes. Has he demonstrated the skill to not create needless enemies through bombastic statements and little digs? No.
He still has not. As such, his ability to build the coalition necessary to thwart the dems is limited. How did DeSantis turn Florida red? How did he get a squish legislature to embrace the MAGA agenda? It wasn't by ridicule. He focused on the most important enemies and stayed laser focused on it - Disney, wokeism, stupid Covid rules, and the missteps of the Biden administration. He worked to tighten up election integrity, and viola, red state. Not purple. Red.
Trump could not get his voters to vote for his PA senatorial candidate. Trump got us Fetterman. It pains me to say it, but he did. He made an enemy of Kemp over covid and can't win in Georgia. Kemp won in a landslide. Walker is facing a runoff. And we are praying that Lake can overcome the venom of the McCain machine in Maricopa. A machine that Trump directly attacked without a plan to defeat it.
He has a certain skill set, but he has brought us as far as he can. At a certain point you need to acknowledge that a different set of skills will be necessary to keep up the good fight.
And I would note - Oz defeated the cheating in Philly. He lost in western PA. In Trump country. Yes, he wasn't the greatest candidate, but he had the ability to navigate the cheat that could still occur, and it was much smaller than in 2020.

If Republicans were an NFL team, the opposing tean, the refs, the media, stadium staff and fans from BOTH teams would be working against us. We can choose to lose honorably by standing by our principles, or we can choose to fight and survive by exploring which principles might need to be relaxed in order to give ourselves a fighting chance.

You've pushed this line before and there's nothing behind it. Beyond Trump, yes, DeSantis is the future of the Republican party, although that future is looking more like that of 1860, but, right now, Trump/DeSantis seems the best move.

ReplyDeleteI didn't think the 2020 was valid. It was full of irregularities. But there was no judicial relief available.
I see how the Democrats are destroying this country with their liberal policies. I am afraid that we won't have the country I know unless they are stopped.
I thought that Trump would be best way to do this. So I voted for Trump, not because I like Trump but because I love America.
I now see that Trump has been an hinderance to this cause. Why do I say that? Because of these issues:
1) Trump is a polarizing figure. He widened the appeal of the GOP party to be more downscale. But he's driving away the white, surburban women voters in purple areas.
2) He raised over $100M in this election cycle. He donated about $10M to his endorsed candidates, even though they were lacking any funds. Why didn't he help them out financially?
McConnell was leery of funding these Trump-endorsed MAGA candidates. He didn't fund these candidates at first. But then he reversed course and funded them at the last minute.
McConnell, an Establishment leader, ended up funding the Trump-endorsed MAGA candidates more than Trump himself.
Trump will give endorsements freely and hold a rally but he won't donate money to them.
That's pretty much all you need to know.
3) I understand the resistance that Trump has to mail in ballots. I think it's ripe for fraud. However, there's been 2 elections where the Dems have perfected this and used it to their advantage.
Trump is obstinately against it when he should stop complaining about it and start using it. Cheat like the Dems cheat...to win.
4) This is going to be a signal of how Trump thinks. Does he think only of himself? Or does he put the interests of the country over his own interests?
He's been talking about making an announcement on Nov 15th. It's when he will announce his 2nd run for president.
He wants to be back in the spotlight. But does he need to do this now? The next important event is the GA Senate runoff.
If he is putting the interest of the country ahead of his interests, he will put off making any announcements for his next run until after the GA Senate runoff is done. It will not help Walker and it might hurt him.
But if he announces his 2nd POTUS run on Nov 15th as expected, then I know that he's only thinking about himself.
If it's a choice between Trump and Biden (or Trump and Hillary), I'm voting for Trump. But I would like to see another candidate who can win and stop the Dems from continuing to destroy my country.
I've never been someone who supported Trump because of any personal affinity to him. I support Trump, not because I like Trump but because I love America.
Maybe it's time for another candidate to lead the Trumpism movement.

DeleteYou're right. I came to the same conclusion, pretty much along the same pathway. Donald J. Trump was a great president. He was on track to be an all-time great until he got sidetracked by COVID, and, probably, even with the COVID debacle he still is an all-time great given the whole "peace and prosperity" thing. But Trump is a disrupter. He disrupted things that needed to be disrupted. But disrupters are exhausting. Trump has made a major contribution to this country, but it's time to turn over the reins to someone younger and fresher. Perhaps the governor of that state where the Red Wave(TM) really did crest as a tsunami, perhaps someone else. Looking at what's happened in PA, MI, and WI, and, perhaps AZ, there would be no pathway to 270 electoral votes for a Trump presidential campaign. I'm not arguing that he wasn't a great president. I'm sorry, I can respect what Trump did for us. WHat he did for America. And I can also acknowledge that he has failed to demonstrate what will be necessary to take the next leap. Sometimes a sports team needs a certain type of manager at one point in their evolution, but need something else as they mature. It's a realization that something needs to change. Can Trump change? No evidence yet. His Monday evening comments demonstrated that.
DeSantis' communication team is far superior to anyone Trump has gone up against. You'll notice DeSantis has really said nothing about the slight. He refused to engage. But when Trump gets way out over his skiis, the return fire will come.
I'll vote for whichever GOP candidate comes out of the primary. I hope Trump voters won't forget what happened in Western PA yesterday, when they couldn't see the bigger picture. If DeSantis goes into Georgia and convinces Kemp to help Walker, for this favor or that, Trump will have to show he can keep his mouth shut. I'm looking for some reason to grab any evidence that Trump has the ability to do more to get us over the dem cheat machine.

Arizona had a proposition on the ballot for increased voter ID, and the last I looked it was voted down. The fact is that when you continue to allow ballot fraud you get it. Odd, no? The other plain fact is that Washington DC, and the administrative state, is completely unserviceable at this point. It's a part of the "Cancer" as Sara Hoyt wrote. I agree with you 100%. The Trump era is over. Red Eagle Politics on YouTube is a caution by the way. He insists that Trump is still the future, but ALL of his election models depended on Republican candidates outperforming Trump's 2020 performance. DeSantis flipped Miami-Dade. Only a Pollyanna would suppose that Trump is capable of doing the same thing.

The complacency (or complicity) of Ronna McDaniel/Mitch McConnell/Kevin McCarthy played a much bigger role in this cycle than Trump. “Trump can’t win in purple states?” He did in 2016. And then EXPANDED those margins in 2020, until a bunch of mail ballots dropped in the wee hours, a new development in federal elections. And that’s what’s at the root of this. By Hook or by crook, the Democrats have figured out how to put ballots in the hands of their low information, low propensity voters, and then collect them in the WEEKS leading up to the election. I can’t say Trump is the way forward. At this point, I don’t have a dog in the 2024 fight. But BLAMING Trump for any of this is just a terribly misinformed take.

ReplyDeleteMail-in voting allows "stoners and slackers" to vote. Back in the day, they reliably voted D but were unreliable voters. Hard to get off the futon when you are stoned and/or watching stupid reality TV shows. Mail-in voting allows them to vote without getting off the futon (Mom can walk it to the drop box). Now, the S/S are reliable D's who vote reliably. COVID did that, with a huge assist from politicians from both sides (in PA, the Republican majority legislature adopted mail-in voting before the 2020 election). Unless and until mail-in voting is abolished (only absentee allowed for military and a couple other relevant exceptions), we will never get out of this mess.

In regards to Trump/DeSantis, a decent litmus test is to ask yourself this: Does Trump care about the Republican party close to what he cares about himself? Same question for DeSantis and whichever one you believe cares more about the party is the one that seems like the better candidate. I will say this: Trump was making fun of Republicans three days before the election. You folks who chose to ignore that are part of the problem and not part of the solution.

ReplyDeleteI have too many conservative friends who are through with him and have been for a while. They despise him (for many reasons, none that I agree with).
If that is happening across the country, we can’t have it. Sad, but time to step aside.
If Trump choses to run in 2024, he has my support. No matter how tactless he might be, he has proven that he is the best and most capable person to be president of this country!!!

ReplyDeleteTrump should run with DeSantis as VP, then DeSantis for 8 years after Trump. Trump may be a wrecking ball, but that's exactly what's needed when the system needs to be torn down and built back up again.

ReplyDeleteI'm with the folks who believe that it was McConnell's and the uni-party RINO's fault for a showing that should have been better. McConnell made no effort to make the election about Biden and the Dems who have made great strides in destroying our middle class, our military, our foreign policy, our border, our schools and our economy. That portion of GOP leadership failed America and Americans again - just like they did during POTUS Trump's 4 years of service to our country. They helped to ensure that he is stained as impure - by the slum lords of the swamp and deep state. This "30 pieces of silver" group has helped to destroy America and American citizens lives.

ReplyDeleteSleep on it a while longer Don, and perhaps it will clear your head. Trump wasn't on the ballot. A mixed bag of Republican candidates were. Clearly turnout was suppressed. Still, we're going to take the House, and grind Biden's agenda to a halt. The fundamental problem is and always has been that the Republican establishment is barely discernible from the Democrat establishment. The MAGA movement - TRUMP - woke you (all of us) up to that fact, did it not? Or were you not serious when you wrote about the Harlem Globetrotters vs the "Never Trump" (Weekly Standard / National Review) crowd? The RNC refuses to turn out the vote for hard-right conservatives, unless neglecting to do so will threaten their power. The way forward is to fight harder. If we go back to "the middle", we'll just going further to the left, like we've been doing for the past 50 years.

Blame goes to weak Republican leadership. We need more MAGA republicans in places of power, so McConnel and McCarthy are not effective. They are the reason we did not get the wave, Trump is brining us great candidates who will make a difference. Just having an R next to your name means Nothing.
Look at Murkowski she actively campaigned against Republicans. Clearly you are just getting ready to sell another book.

And again. Building that base. Driving home that name recognition. And when a weak Republican candidate emerges in TX (who comes after Abbot?), that's when they'll pounce. The problem with "real" conservatives in general is that, like the man who authored this article, they're disinterested in power. They just want to be free. So they give up easily when it comes to politics, because it takes a lot of narcissism and ambition to succeed in politics. Now let me ask you - which Republican candidate is ambitious and narcissistic? Name the first one who comes to mind. ;) Trump will win in 2024.

ReplyDeletePeople better start worrying about deploying their life rafts & figuring out where they're going to sail them instead of wasting anymore time pursuing political solutions. The damage is done, no one can prevent the consequences now, even if we get an America first candidate in every office across the land, which we won't. It's imperative that right thinking individuals survive the global socioeconomic collapse & meet up again on the other side to pick up the pieces. There's not likely to be many democrats or social justice warriors there to contend with anymore, so there's that.
ReplyDeleteI like the things Trump believes and does, but he is also his own worst enemy at times. Style isn't everything. Obama had style. But it's not nothing either. It's not like we can just ignore his weaknesses, which are substantial. If he stays in the game he will be a drag, as this election demonstrates.

The Turtle wasted money on Alaska by backing Murkowski and pulled money from other candidates, saying Trump should support them. Who does that but a deliberate saboteur?
Ron DeSantis is a nice guy and patriot, but he’s owned by his donors. And they’re mainly big money donors, not the little everyday guy.

ReplyDeleteI’m coming to this conclusion too. For me it was when Trump came out and started making it about his predictions/endorsements. I’ve resisted buying into the “he’s just a narcissist” line, but his performance on election night and then more recently talking about it being a “good night” for him has brought me to where you are.
