Shred the Constitution and blame Trump

You don't have to be braindead to be a liberal. Booze and hallucinogens will suffice.

I don't know if John Harris, a founding editor of Politico, imbibes but after reading his column on junking the Constitution, I hope he was stoned because I would hate to believe someone that successful is that ignorant.

He wrote, "The Best Way To Save The Constitution From Donald Trump Is To Rewrite It.

"Deference to our founding document is essential to democracy. But mystical devotion is not."

On the one hand, Harris argued that President Trump is a threat to the Constitution because he dared protest the unusual amount of mailed-in ballots. Voter turnout somehow shot up from 56% in 2016 (which is the usual number) to 67% in 2020 -- the highest in a century. The highest in that century was 61% in 1964 following the assassination of Kennedy, Journalists would have investigated but we have none in DC.

His case against Trump offers no other evidence. You just have to accept that Trump is evil in much the same way that you just have to accept climate change. This is faith-based politics. If you question the assumption, you are a denialist.

Harris wrote, "First, Trump is properly seen as a constitutional menace, but from a progressive perspective many of the most offensive features of his tenure were not in defiance of the Constitution.

"Instead, they flowed directly from its most problematic provisions. He was in office in the first place because the presidency is chosen by the Electoral College rather than by the popular vote. His influence will live for decades because partisan manipulation of the Senate’s judicial confirmation power gave him three Supreme Court justices, who have no term limits and face no practical mechanisms of accountability. Like some other presidents, but more so, he used the Constitution’s absolute pardon power for nakedly self-interested reasons. In short, Trump may be an enemy of the Constitution but he is also the president who most zealously exploited its defects."

What Harris calls defects are protections from a media-manipulated mob.

He then wrote, "That leads to the second paradox. Anyone who is not a Trump backer properly bemoans the breakdown in constitutional consensus that allows his supporters to tolerate or celebrate his election denialism, in addition to other efforts to insulate himself from rule of law. Long-term, however, the more bracing challenge to constitutional consensus is likely to come from the left, from believers in activist government."

Harris is arguing that the Constitution is bad because it enabled Trump to become president and enabled conservative magistrates to replace the liberal ones on the Supreme Court.

The only paradox I see is Harris bemoaning the Constitution as flawed while pretending to want to save it. As far as election denialism goes, Democrats still refuse to accept the results from 2016. Obama led a seditious resistance which included spying on Donald Trump.

The liberal assault on the Constitution is not new. Any time they do not get their way, they demand changes in the Constitution.

Jeffrey Toobin wrote in the New Yorker on December 1, 2013, "Obama was elected twice, both times by comfortable margins in the popular vote and by landslides in the electoral college. Though he will spend eight years in office, his tenure as the actual leader of the national government lasted about a year and a half. On July 7, 2009, Al Franken was seated, after a recount, as the sixtieth Democratic senator. (Sixty votes are needed to overcome a filibuster.) Between that time and the end of 2010, Obama pushed through Congress health-care reform (the Affordable Care Act), financial reform (the Dodd-Frank legislation), a bailout of the automobile industry, a repeal of 'don’t ask, don’t tell' in the military, and the ratification of an arms-control treaty with Russia. The President also won the confirmation of two Justices to the Supreme Court. In the midterm elections of 2010, Obama’s party lost control of the House and fell below the filibuster threshold in the Senate.

"Since then, Obama has failed to accomplish almost anything in Congress. Following his second Inauguration, the President embraced a gun-control bill that had universal background checks as its centerpiece. Even though polls showed that roughly ninety per cent of the public supported the idea, the legislation died in the Senate."

This is how the Constitution is supposed to work. Senate filibusters prevent a demagogue from rolling over the opposition to have his way with the law and the people.

Indeed, Toobin left off the part where Obama created the DACA program by an executive order and not a law. That Supreme Court that liberals now hate allowed this one man rule and refused to allow Trump to change it.

The Constitution is not broken; it is ignored.

Trump brought it back. Liberals now want to shred it and blame him.

    1. And....has anybody pointed out that Reid (a demo commie) is the one who changed the rule for judicial appointments from 60 votes to a majority?

    2. Note also that the Constitutional feature Harris whine about most, equal-rep of states in the Senate, is the one feature of the Const designated (see Art. V) as unamendable. So he's implicitly a revolutionary.

  2. You put your finger on it. Since Politico is read by the cocktail party, DC smart set, it will take "Trump is evil" as an article of faith, prima facie.

  4. He wants democracy to replace a republic.

The Constitution is not broken; it is ignored.

    Exactly.

PS s/b this one man rule

  5. Yes, it's all about replacing your constitutional republic with their so-called democracy so that winning is always in the bag for them. This is the beltway's dream.

    1. The greatest danger we face is not from totalitarians on the so-called “left” who want to destroy the republic—it’s from our own team who will not admit that we actually have a constitutional republic, where man’s rights are enshrined. Rather they prattle on about democracy and act as if one can vote another man’s rights away—which happens constantly.

  6. It was Clinton who began selling his office for pardons and his wife who sold promise futures on her phone during her actual and intended office journeys. It was only the Constitution that prevented her from delivering on those promises, sparking insane rage in her jilted investors. This guy knows the 20 election was rigged just as Newsweek and even The Telegraph in London confirmed. Trump is the foil for his lust to ruin the lives of everyone who ever told him to fuck off

    2. Can't leave out 1995 clinton commerce dept changing the rules to allow LORAL space corporation to sell missile guidance technology to china for campaign contributions! Talk about ignore the constitution? Before this corrupt act, china's missiles blew up on the launch platform most of the time. Now they are super accurate and surely aimed at us!
Or Obama making big deal of declaring his admin would IGNORE the lawfully passed federal stat concerning the DEFENSE OF MARRIAGE ACT that clinton signed into law. No one even complained, just another day in the office, an "in your face" slap to tradition and congress.
More examples? How much time do you have??

  7. Harris may not be stupid in general, but blinding rage coupled with liberalism makes one stupid politically.

It goes without question that Toobin is a bloomin’ idiot. He was probably pounding more than just his keyboard when he wrote that article.

  8. I first heard the contempt for the Constitution from a liberal in 1993, I was shocked. Don, I appreciate your reading leftist columns and sources, which requires the kind of stomach a first responder has to develop. Still, I'll gladly hear the argument from a leftist, and only ask that they remain quiet enough to hear my side. I've met a few like that.

  9. I have a family member who is Democrat, smart, very intelligent, helped found and run a MENSA chapter in the Dallas Fort Worth area in Texas otherwise known as North Texas, granted that encapsulates a lot.

A while back we discussed politics in which she stated there are other constitutions in the world and intimated that are better. I countered with the several constitutions of the Soviet Union in which there were explicit rights not found in ours and asked, rhetorically, how did that work out. Of course, I got silence on that.

No matter your views, our constitution is the best their is. It is not perfect as our Founders recognized, but it beats any other constitution hands down.

    2. Unfortunately, Ruth Bader Ginsburg said the same thing. One thing for someone who's been telling you she was a genius since she was 17 to say that, and quite another for a supreme court justice to do that.

    3. RBG said this very thing about other constitutions in a lecture to her adoring slaves. The US Constitution is actually anti Democratic in the ancient Greek sense of 'Democratic'. Jefferson knew what he was doing because he read Thucydides. Individual Freedom has nothing to do with one Man one vote. The Politico jerk knows this too. His solution is always to buy 50%+1.

  10. Yes, we were founded as a Constitutional Republic. But we're not even a democracy anymore. A true democracy would actually be an improvement at this point because it implies "One Man, One Vote".

We are a classically Fascist Corporate/State Dictatorship. Even if it is not yet a completely totalitarian dictatorship, it is close enough. And in many ways beyond previous dictatorships due to technology.

  11. Would this not allow us to vote in slavery again? After all if the popular vote is so important, then voting on re-instituting slavery would be a no brainer....kind of like a liberal - no brainer.

    How about the fake electors.
"This is how the Constitution is supposed to work. Senate filibusters prevent a demagogue from rolling over the opposition to have his way with the law and the people."

And you quoted a gun control law that was popular with the people...as an example of lawmakers supposed working in the peoples best interest. You don't care about the general public, but want a collective of "enlightened" despots who ignore the will of the people that elected them.
"The only paradox I see is Harris bemoaning the Constitution as flawed while pretending to want to save it. As far as election denialism goes, Democrats still refuse to accept the results from 2016. Obama led a seditious resistance which included spying on Donald Trump."

Researching it leads to one of those 'hedge funds' in NY that were founded by some of the rats that were around Henry Morgenthau. Jr. and run by their descendants.
