Is CNN making Fox nervous?

Fox threw shade again on CNN, which under new ownership is cleaning up the mess Jeff Zucker left behind. While the departure of Brian Stelter cheered conservatives, who the hell was Fox to applaud? It still has Neal Cavuto and Bret Baier on the air.

Nevertheless, Fox reported, "CNN, Politico indicate that ‘go woke, go broke’ applies to news organizations.

"New owners want nonpartisan coverage at CNN, Politico but conservatives are skeptical."

Conservatives are skeptical? It is our default setting for the media and with good reason. Look how Fox called Arizona for Biden in 2020 (a state he won by 0.3%) before calling Florida or Ohio for Trump, states he carried by 3.4% and 8%.

While Fox enjoys good ratings thanks to Gutfeld, The Five and Tucker Carlson, the enthusiasm for Fox no longer is there. Newsmax and OANN took shots at toppling Fox but just like all those alternatives to Twitter (Parler, Gab and Truth Social) it is a Herculean effort taken on by 98-pound weaklings.

CNN, though, is another matter. It is not a shoestring operation, which is why Fox keeps taking shots at it.

However, this story's premise was factually flawed. CNN may be woke but it is not going broke. Far from it.

In August, the New York Post reported, "CNN’s profits are poised to drop below the $1 billion mark for the first time since 2016 as its new boss scrambles for new ways to generate revenue, according to a report.

"Chris Licht, who took the helm of CNN three months ago after the surprise exit of former chief executive Jeff Zucker, has not only inherited a scandal-scarred network, but is also running a channel with slumping ratings.

"The cable news network’s profitability is on pace to decline to $956.8 million this year, according to projections from S&P Market Intelligence. That’s well short of the company’s internal target of $1.1 billion, according to the New York Times."

CNN is a cash cow. Raking in $956.8 million in profits during a recession is pretty darned good.

As for scandal-scarred, two words: Bill O'Reilly. Two more: Roger Ailes.

Fox makes even more money than CNN. Fox is a cash whale.

But cable TV -- and network television -- are headed for the Island of Misfit Technology where AM radio and newspapers sit around and reminisce about when they were important. There are 30 houses on my street and two newspaper subscribers.

Few cable TV outlets will survive streaming. Fox is an orphan as Disney-plus could easily add ABC News, Peacock could add MSNBC and Warner can add CNN.

Calling Brian Stelter a potato head and Don Lemon a dummy won't change that.

  1. Murdoch realized the huge underserved market for a non-liberal news outlet. It has since been co-opted and is creating its own replacements.

While it still has Tucker and others, Fox Corporate is a Uni-Party fellow traveler, which helped steal the last election and wants to help steal the next ones, too.

    Back to you, Bret.

    1. Yeah, Fox has a decision to make - tell the Murdoch wives to go drink their white wine by themselves or get wiped out as their news division keeps getting more and more irrelevant.

As for streaming - if Amazon cannot do streaming, as they couldn't Thursday night - I think there is a little bit of time left for cable.

  2. They would be smart to bring Glenn Beck O’Reilly and Megyn Kelly to their network. Only watchable show on Fox is Carlson.

    1. The Five has Jeanine Piro, who pulls no punches, and Maria Bartiromo on Fox Business News is great. I can't stand B'Or, and I'll always remember Megyn K who made it her mission to go after Trump.

  3. I don't even watch Gutfield, Tucker, or the 5. I occasionally watch a Tucker comment on YouTube but that's it. If I watch TV at all, as soon as any news program comes on regardless the source I default to reruns of NCIS. (I like to think there is a government agency with that kind of integrity.)

    1. Like you, an occasional Carlson clip. Nothing live. I used to turn to CNN and MSNBC to see what the enemy is up to, but haven’t in a long time. Internet news and opinion from trusted sources is all I need.

    2. I, too, am grateful for those NCIS reruns.

  4. Was Ailes a molester or was it just a set-up?

Inquiring and enquiring minds want to know.

  5. Ailes was a normal alpha male of his and many prior generations. He didn't demand sex to get a role - as so many Hollywood gay and straight continue to do - but I doubt he said no to the willing who thought it gave them a leg up (so to speak).

The same cabal that control the rest of fake news pounced when they sensed Ailes was elderly enough to be easily disgraced and discarded.

Gretchen Carlson - his primary accuser - was hated by all her co-workers and forced off of every show she co-hosted. The cabal saw to it she was well compensated for her dishonest attacks.

    1. Nonsense. Carlson had audio recordings to back up her claims, which is why Fox settled with her for $20M. She wasn't "forced off every show she co-hosted" either.

  6. I miss newspapers. They had to limit their words to the space they had. major news organizations now seem to think more words is more value, but it’s just a waste of my time. Thanks Don.

  8. All anyone on the left had to do was turn down the "I hate republicans!" and "It's all the fault of republicans!" and "Trump voters are the devil!" just a smidgen and they're pulling audience from Fox News. CNN backed off the crazy just a smidgen and it's apparently paying dividends already.

How long did Fox News think they had left with Paul Ryan and Rupert Murdoch's son guiding their ship? Paul Ryan is pretty much the Hillary Clinton of the republican party. Like Hillary, anything Ryan touches eventually goes the way of the dodo too. Adios Fox News...

  9. We are watching Real America's Voice, Ed Henry has a very good morning show, and of course, Steve Bannon's War Room, morning and late afternoon show. In the evening, Studio 6 B is a very good show with some great personalities. Then Jack Posobeic to close out the evening. We cut the cord, stream using Roku, no more Fox News here. If CNN goes back to being a legit news source, good for them, still not going to watch. The stench of so many years of lies is simply too much to swallow.

  10. My wife and I stopped watching Fox News once they became a liberal leaning station, we only watch OANN and read Citizenfreepress as Drudge also went liberal.

    2. Fox news is a bad joke. Only their xomentators are worth watching. Yes its the same as the rest of corporate media. Stop drinking the kool aid.

  11. It will take a long time, if ever, for CNN to garner credibility. They lied, misled, twisted news for so long that CNN is synonymous with "disinformation".

  12. Don nailed this. However what will save Fox is if they stream directly live. The tech is there and they have the funds. They also could combine it with Fox Nation.

  13. For many years Fox News could brag they were the #1 cable news source. It wasn't that big an accomplishment when you realize they were, at the time, the only news station giving a fair shake to conservatives. The leftists were divided among all the other networks so naturally their numbers were spread and lower.

CNN is under new management and with some of the recent personnel changes, the new guy might be serious in his attempt. Fox has reason to worry.

Full disclosure: I watch none of them other than clips online.
