California is too communist for Red China

Red China announced it is closing its pork facility in California citing too many regulations and taxes.

The facility is owned and operated by Smithfield Foods of Smithfield, Virginia, which in turn is owned by Red China.

The company announced, "Smithfield Foods, Inc. today announced that it will cease all harvest and processing operations in Vernon, California in early 2023 and, at the same time, align its hog production system by reducing its sow herd in its Western region. The company will decrease its sow herd in Utah and is exploring strategic options to exit its farms in Arizona and California. Smithfield harvests only company-owned hogs in Vernon. Smithfield will service customers in California with its Farmer John brand and other brands and products from existing facilities in the Midwest.

"Smithfield is taking these steps due to the escalating cost of doing business in California.

"Smithfield is providing transition assistance to all impacted employees, including relocation options to other company facilities and farms as well as retention incentives to ensure business continuity until early next year. The company reached an agreement this week with the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and the International Union of Operating Engineers as part of its plan to close the Vernon facility."

Congratulations, California. You are now too communist for the Communists.

AP reported, Jim Monroe, vice president of corporate affairs, "said operating costs in California are much higher than in other areas of the country, including taxes and the price of water, electricity and natural gas."

Monroe said, "Our utility costs in California are 3 1/2 times higher per head than our other locations where they do the same type of work."

That reflects California's utility regulations.

Then there is the majority of the California electorate, which did not allow its ignorance of farm life to keep it from passing Proposition 12 in 2018, which mandated that food processing companies give hogs larger pens. This reflects a knowledge of pigs that is limited to Wilbur in Charlotte's Web and Arnold Ziffel.

So goes California, so goes the nation. Look for a small dip in bacon prices as Smithfield thins its herd down to zero.

But watch the price of bacon soar when the plant folds next year.

Maybe we can import our pork from Red China, like we do everything else.

  1. Hard to believe that Fed regulators approved the sale of the largest pork producer in the world, and an American company, to the Communist Party of China.
Then again, look who is in charge.

    1. Almost certain this acquisition of Smithfield by the Commies was during Obama.

    2. Yes. Smithfield was sold in 2013.

The annoying aspect of this decision is that although it's economically sensible when you compare states, it's impossible not to wonder if there is political logic (i.e., advancing communism) behind it as well.

What would that be? I don't know, but if the US had prevented the sale, which they should have, the questions wouldn't exist.

    3. If I remember correctly, Obama wanted to sell long beach naval station to china overseas shipping company. And don't they run the Panama canal?
The amazing irony to me is that the queen of earmarks, piglosi, actually let some pork escape her greedy talons.
      Amazing.
And she's old enough to have done lap dances at the original Tammany hall.

  2. Arnold Ziffel was the smartest character on Green Acres. Eb wasn’t too far behind.

If Arnold was alive today, he would be smarter than all of the democrat officeholders on California. Maybe the country.

    1. I doubt any of the Cali fornicators would have had a clue who Arnold was even when Oliver was driving his Hoyt Clagwell around the pasture.

    2. Arnold once predicted a snowstorm in the middle of summer (with his tail, if I recall correctly) and it happened exactly as he said! He’s not only smarter than the lefties, he pioneered climate change first!

    3. Thank you for causing me to reminisce over Eva Gabor. I was too young to truly appreciate the humor, but Lisa made me understand the value of a dollar.

  3. I'm Jewish and don't eat pork.
Nevertheless this affects the price of Kosher meat by driving up the price.
AFAIK part of Trump's deal with the Chinese, until it was abrogated by covid, was to sell them pork.

    1. That’s microeconomics for you. The liberals don’t know anything about micro. Their hero Keynes was macro. Macro is never right.

    2. Actually, Mr l, they butcher Keynes like everything else. Keynes actually said you can borrow during bad times, but you must pay it back and establish reserves during good times.

  4. As an amateur investor who just did the weekly grocery run this morning, I’ve decided to purchase a can of black bean powder which supposebly is a fine substitute for beef burgers. 🤣🤣🤣 Also, BUY LENTILS!!! 😂😂😂

    1. I have to say there is no substitute for beef, chicken, pork, or crawdads. I am definitely not one of the haves in this country, but I will be damned to be a have not. I will spend my money on the item and brand that I want. I have that option, not rich, but doing fine. Biden and Co. Have ruined a good thing, I will out last those pieces of shit!!!

    2. I live in mountains with large rocks. Pry out rocks, fill hole with bunny poop and shredded oak leaves. Plant watermelons or winter squash and let vines ramble over mountain side.
In these parts, you show up with iced down melons, you get a good seat at any bbq.
And feral hog smoked slow over green hickory...mmmm good.

  5. Wouldn’t it have been cheaper to import Chinese slave labor? I hear it’s easier than ever to get them into the Country.

  6. Smithfield is not the only producer. Haven't bought them since the CCP takeover. I buy local if I can. but Z's Black bean and lentils idea is sounding good.

  7. There have been numerous cases of hog diseases in the Chinese hog population. In 2013 they were fishing thousands of dead pigs out of a river in Jiaxing (never saw an official explanation.) Also in late 2019 they were battling a huge outbreak of African Swine Fever and culled hundreds of thousands, possibly millions, of hogs. That the latter coincided with the emergence of Covid is purely a coincidence*cough*

  8. When you have to deal with three unions to close a plant: I'm sure it's all good as long as they all got their beak's wet.
