A country its leaders do not live in

Congress now has had more prime time committee hearings on the January 6th protest than it did on 9/11. I am not sure just what the purpose of the January 6th hearings is. Americans have turned their attention to inflation and recession.

But in Washington, where no one ever gets laid off and no one has to go to work if it snows, the show is the talk of the town. The rest of the country has to work today. DC closed for Juneteenth.

The great divide in America is not between lefties and righties. The divide is between the governed and the government. Two reports from Salena Zito, the Pittsburgh reporter who actually talks to people, confirm this.

The first report is about a city park honoring the Hampton Battery, a band of brothers who fought in the Civil War under the command of its founder, Captain Robert B. Hampton.

Zito wrote, "Residents say the Civil War statue is literally surrounded by drug dealers, buyers, and users around the clock. They are getting more aggressive with panhandling, trespassing, and theft.

"Just yards away, along the old Pennsylvania canal, a man walks down the street, carrying a brand new patio chair stolen from the porch of a nearby home, toward the new and growing homeless camp. Last week, there were two tents or makeshift abodes. Now, there are over a dozen.

"On the sidewalk, a woman dances erratically in her socks, her hoodie pulled up over her head. She then abruptly collapses in the street — within minutes, the medics arrive, and she is revived. She then continues on despite having overdosed minutes earlier."

But the politicians of Pittsburgh ignore the drug dealing. They are focused on other things, she reported.

Hers is an unpleasant column about the denegation of America. Let us turn to a happier time when the nation had Howard Johnson restaurants from coast to coast. Well, the last one closed recently. But in its heyday, HoJo was the Sears, Roebuck of franchised restaurants.

Zito wrote, "Richard W. Sears understood customers’ needs because he understood and experienced their challenges, which is easy when you come from Stewartville, Minnesota, where the population at the turn of the 20th century was under 800. You are in touch with the customer when you are the customer. In short, he was able to put himself in their shoes.

"Howard D. Johnson, a World War I veteran who inherited his father’s soda shop, knew people. Despite failing a lot more times than succeeding in his early days, he never stopped trying, innovating and learning what his customers wanted.

"The beginning of the end for both companies began as they kept getting sold and resold and sold again to venture capital groups, the operators of which never once ate at a HoJo’s or bought Sears auto parts to fix their car or had their children circle what they wanted for Christmas in the Wish Book. When you share little in common with your customers, how do you innovate to keep them and their children?"

She made a good point.

They say the beginning of the end for Union Carbide was when it moved its headquarters from West Virginia to Stamford, Connecticut. Within 10 years, Bhopal happened and the company was no more, being mercifully bought out by Dow. The sale saved many a retired Carbider's life savings.

Sears, which became a national retailer through mail orders, could have been Amazon but its CEOs were money men, not retailers. Jeff Bezos came along and wanted to sell books online. After a couple of decades, he retired as the richest man in the world. Elon Musk has since supplanted him.

Our politicians are not Sears or Howard Johnson or Bezos or Musk. Our politicians are just money men out of touch with the nation they would lead. Which brings me back to the January 6 obsession in Washington.

Food inflation is in the double-digits. It costs $100 now to fill up a pickup truck. Baby formula and tampons are in short supply. The stock market is tanking. Poverty is just around the corner. Miles of homeless people in pup tents line the streets along the West Coast. Drug overdose deaths now top 100,000 a year. Millions of terrorists, gangbangers and other illegal aliens have flooded in under Biden.

But Congress hired a former ABC executive to put together a TV extravaganza on J6 featuring some guy in a buffalo hat grinning inside the Capitol. He looked like Randy Quaid in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation film. I would have busted my bladder if the guy said, "Shitter's full."

We put Liz Cheney and the rest in charge. They may soon learn we can replace them.

There is an election on November 8. Chickens won't be coming home to roost. Eagles will arrive, talons up.

Newt Gingrich sees 75 House seats flipping Republican -- which would be his party's best showing in 128 years. This only works if you flush about half those 200 or so sitting Republican congressmen down the commode with their Democrat pals. We found that out in 2010 when Republicans threw away their Tea Party victory like Biden threw away Afghanistan.

The people we elected to take care of our politics don't live here anymore. They live in gated communities and work in a Capitol patrolled by 1,869 uniformed officers.

Zito ended her park piece, "This ugly reality will affect the elections this fall, probably far more than the political class understands. Why? Because they never take the time to walk down a street like Cedar Avenue and ask how it is going. More importantly, they take for granted that they will always have the voters they have always had, never realizing most people have a breaking point."

We shall see how many voters break with the status quo on November 8.

  1. Excellent post, Don. It's time to throw out the money men and vote for Save America and America First patriots.

  2. Don, both you and Salena are treasures. Never stop doing what you are doing. The columns by both of you today are spot on. Sadly politicians serve themselves -- at the trough. Witness Joe Biden now in the White House. Politicians all over the world are totally disconnected from their voters' needs. They have no interest in walking down Main Street to see what is going on. They are too busy walking down the halls of power to see what is in it for them. Populism is here to stay.

    2. It is interesting that the DC elite have become so insulated, they should be thankful this isn't a communist dictatorship. When they fall, frequently the leaders get a very upfront and personal version of that failure visited upon them.

I appreciate they fail to see just how angry the people are getting. I think everyone sees around a 40 seat default GOP House pick up. But I do think it could be bigger because the dems don't seem to be able to stop doing what is ticking everyone off.

Don, this morning you published that silly dem piece saying we (dems) will win the House and the Senate.

The House is gone. The dems can be thankful it is a year for the GOP to defend the Senate, not the dems. But still the GOP will take the senate - Kelley (D) loses in Arizona. Warnock (D) will get crushed in Georgia. Masto (D) will get beat by Laxalt in Nevada. Early polling, all of it biased towards democrats show the dems losing or tied with the GOP candidate. 3 flips. And we will hold our nose and vote for Oz in PA because we hope he's Trump's guy, not McConnell's. 52-48. GOP. One analysis I'd like to see is how big a rep district has to be dem + to be safe this go round. Everything I'm reading says a Dem +10 or less district is in play. I'm wondering if that might not be higher?

In 2024 I could see the dems losing 10 more senate seats. Because even with the GOP winning in 2022, FJB can do much harm in the WH, surrounded by ideologues and idiots.

That would be 62-38. Our expectation of the GOP president in 2024 is the elimination of the departments of energy, education and housing. A restructuring of the EPA. And a complete firing of every leader at State, DOJ, and DOD; with the firing - not retirement - of the Joint Chiefs, and a review of every senior officer at the General level in each service. Every wokester gets fired and dishonorably discharged.

It's time to cut off the head of DC.

    3. Black Jem, I pray you are right. There are plenty who will be voting for that GOP change. If we get those majorities, I think we can kick enough RINO's to get those goals accomplished.

    6. The POTUS, House and Senate no longer ru this country: unelected, unaccountable bureaucrats who have metastasized to the spinal cord of America do.

Until we rid ourselves of the 10s (100s?) of thousands of them, our vote is all for show.

    7. Which is why the next GOP president must be surgical, and have the ability to get the GOP House and Senate behind him.

Which is why Trump may not be the best bet to carry it off.

  3. For many, the primaries are the time to break. Sadly, my RINO co freshman won with over 90% of the vote.
Others may be luckier than me.

November 8 will hopefully be a start to getting rid of many democrats and RINOs like Liz Cheney.

  5. "More importantly, they take for granted that they will always have the voters they have always had"

After 2020, I began to suspect that in all likelihood, elected positions are bought and traded and the outcome is determined by a mixture of ballot fraud and tabulation fraud, with the winner being the one who paid the most.

I think Trump disrupted this in 2016 - thus, Hillary waiting to concede because she was calling around trying to "buy" more votes for herself. When that failed, she conceded - and the political class of both parties directed their hatred to Trump.

Therefore, I think the 1st paragraph of this AP News article is the more likely outcome this November :

    https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-biden-prices-20fc7ddf3789332c914da0709b3db3a7

Unless of course, the existing politicians do something to prevent it, which they won't, because they "pay-to-play" too. :(

  7. The j6 committee is actually the third impeachment of President Trump. They are hoping to tarnish his name or get him indicted so he won't win in 2024.
The republicans, if they have a majority, better institute immediate hearings into democrat corruption and treason. Instead of being mr nice guy and forgetting the past and fostering bipartisanship, they need to teach the dems that "what goes around comes around." And do it HARD!!!!

  13. The Republican party should follow Newt's lead and spell out specifically what they will do immediately upon taking over the House & Senate. But they should also make clear that to get anything passed, they need veto override majorities! Go for the gold here! Some items should be reduce the Capital police force to 50. Fifty cops to protect 1,000 congress critters and staff is more than enough. Eliminate the FBI and let the US Marshals do their job. NO MORE Continuing Resolutions. Pass a budget with across the board 20% cuts in all departments and elimination of many others and freeze that spending for next four years. Admit that 'Climate Change' is a total communist fraud and immediately approve more coal fired plants, Natural gas, nuclear etc., plus drill drill drill. Subsidize the Keystone pipeline once and for all, and pass a law so that a future Marxist can't do away with it like Basement Biden did. And pass a law that ANY election fraud carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 5 years plus $100k fine. Period! We are NOTHING without election integrity. It's a start

  15. According to this article from ABC News, they seem pretty confident that the left will do great during the mid-terms (I think they're supposed to be quoting Biden without actually quoting him at some points in the article). Probably counting on winning based on that 2020 quote from Biden “We have put together I think the most extensive and inclusive voter fraud organization in the history of American politics.”

Great post, Don. You’ve captured the essence of the problem - while the nation is in flames TODAY, Dems focus on a non violent event (except for Ashli Babbit) that happened 500 days ago.

This is possible because most of them have never lived in the real world. Never had a job that made them sweat. Never had a job where they were at risk of being fired. Educational background is generally that of an Ivy League puffboy.

In Congress, members are treated as royalty, despite their lack of royal ancestry. Unsurprisingly, they enjoy it, get used to it and want it to never end. They become so detached from the real world it becomes impossible to function as representatives of the people.

Out only choice is to drain the Swamp. Otherwise we are doomed.

  17. DC closed for Juneteenth.

Just so we know, Juneteenth is about 4 counties around what's now Houston where most of the slaves were.

Juneteenth isn't a national holiday because it was never even a state holiday. Just a gimmick to try to keep blacks loyal to the Demos.

    That train has sailed.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Juneteenth should be a compromise position on reparations. No federal holiday on Juneteenth except for blacks. They get the day off, the rest of the country goes about their business. That's the reparations. Period. And never mention it again. Deal?

  20. The divide is between the governed and those in government, but also the populace and the elites who control policy and finance/industry. Those elites have continually squeezed every job possible overseas, set conditions for foreign worker introduction (work visas) at lower pay, or enabled corporate monopoly takeovers. The farm and livestock industry policies all favor meat packers (a handful) over the family rancher, and corporate farms. What we used to call the fabric of America is in tatters. Maybe political populism may salvage some of America before it's too late.
