Poll: Harassing justices backfires

Immediately following the disclosure of Justice Sam Alito's draft of the reversal of Roe, the media cheered protests at the homes of the five justices for reversal and Chief Justice John Roberts.

Zeeshan Aleem of MSNBC wrote, "Centrist and conservative commentators are saying the recent pro-abortion rights protests outside the houses of conservative Supreme Court justices have crossed a line. These are mobs of harassers who have breached the acceptable parameters of protest, critics contend. But such arguments rest in large part on the myth of an apolitical judiciary. Looked at another way, the protests are salutary rather than destructive, bringing something to bear upon the court that by design it has been always been shielded from: democratic energy."

The Biden administration also supported the protests, even though federal law bans such demonstrations.

But the media quickly changed its tune this week. Jeff Bezos is not pleased. The Washington Post's Marc Thiessen wrote, "Protesting at justices' homes is illegal. What is Biden doing about it?"

So what changed the media's mind?

Polls.

I do not have access to their internal polls, but the Trafalgar Group made public answers to its national poll question: "Do you believe that publishing the home addresses of the five U.S. Supreme Court Justices and calling for protests at their private homes is an acceptable way to protest the High Court’s upcoming decision on Roe v. Wade?"

76% said NO.

Only 16% said yes.

Among Democrats, 67% said NO. Only 21% said yes.

The protesters are on the wrong side of public opinion -- and in more than one way. Not only does the public not like their protests, the public disagrees with the protesters on abortion.

Pollster Scott Rasmussen wrote, "Why Overturning Roe May Help Republicans A Lot More Than It Helps Democrats.

"65% of voters think abortion laws should be established by voters and their elected representatives. That’s exactly what will happen if Roe is overturned."

Rasmussen does not just look at his numbers on a spreadsheet. He thinks.

He wrote, "With Roe in place, the abortion laws are set by judges. However, 65% of voters think abortion laws should be established by voters and their elected representatives. That’s exactly what will happen if Roe is overturned. Just 18 percent want to preserve the status quo.

"If Democrats truly believed voters were with them on this issue, they would celebrate this triumph of democracy. Instead, they are outraged. Perhaps they recognize that overturning Roe will call their bluff and highlight the unpopularity of their policy desires."

I agree. And I apply this logic to the media. If they thought the protests worked, they would still be behind them.

Both the media and Democrats are out of step with the public. Rasmussen took a good look at the Democrat proposal to codify Roe. It went well beyond Roe.

He wrote, "The bill would make abortion legal at any point during the pregnancy, up to the moment of birth. That extreme position, now embraced by President Joe Biden, is supported by only 17% of voters. The vast majority — 72% —reject that extreme position."

Only three places I know of allow this: Red China, North Korea and New York.

I am with the 38% who say no to abortion.

And I definitely am with the 76% who say no to harassing justices at their homes. Nice to see the Washington Post now agrees.

  1. Has anyone even considered the thought that the Justices might vote 9-0 ?

    1. Extremely unlikely, given a couple of justices rather extreme views. But a 6-3 is possible, outside chance of 7-2

    2. Actually, I have. That’s very ASTUTE of you, Ms. Wilson.

    3. No democrat appointed justice would ever vote with the majority because they are especially not jurists. There is no constitutional basis for the Roe verdict. It is probably in the top 5 of bad decisions ever decided by the court. The three dems know it. But they are political hacks, not jurists.

    4. JEM, NEVER EVER downplay or dismiss the power of God. Especially now.

    5. Perhaps Breyer on his way out would vote with the constitution. No way the unwise Latina or Kagen would.

    6. z - I never do. I think he is expecting us to carry the load on this one. And the trajectory of the democrats means the necessary personal epiphany for one of those three justices to listen to God whispering in their ear has yet to arrive. Perhaps we are getting close as the left gets sillier by the day. I hope so. But I don't think the time is quite there yet.

  2. A nice case of ACME dynamite. The Dems lit it.
I noticed a lack of poling-now I know why.. It's raining shards of red and white hoods with intermittent Coyote hair.

  3. Courts have been over stepping their bounds for decades. As a current example, legislative districts are supposed to be designed by legislature, but, a lot are now designed by judges. Legislatures should just tell the courts "stay out of our business!"

    1. That is the next battlefield. DeSantis is probably going to drive a tank through the lower court Florida judge who just made up a ruling because. Time to get the robes out legislating.

  4. Media and Dem politicians are totally out of step with the public. Let it bite them in the arse at the polls and in declining trust of media. It's going to be well deserved.

    1. Democrats cry that 70 percent of Americans support abortion. They lie! Ask the people about abortion up to birth and 72 percent oppose it.

    2. Exactly. That is infanticide.

    3. A majority of voters in the US believe abortion should be legal in the first trimester only, with contingencies for rape and incest and extreme deformities impacting post birth viability. They expect protection for providers around refusals of service for conscience.

The next closest group would be those outlawing abortion for any reason save the exceptions above.

  5. Of the bill codifying Roe, 49 Democrat senators supported it. Only Joe Manchin dissented. While their ranks undoubtedly include true believers in abortion, many are cowed by the hobgoblin of facing a loony left primary challenge. They are unfit to hold public office.

    1. Well then, gosh darn, the cowed just need to say STOP! But the Modern Democrat Party has NEVER had those sized balls.

  6. I have been hoping that the "conservative " wing of the SC would finally realize that the dems and fringe left ,sorry to be redundant, hate them and hate americans. Next i hope for the "conservative" justices of the SC to say "screw it, the dems don t want us at their parties any more, lets follow the constitution for and see how they like it"

  7. Don, the bill the Democrats brought to the Senate was never intended to pass. It was for show only, to appease the worst radicals in their party. I said worst because today's Democrat party is radical top to bottom, but there is a batshit crazy wing.

    1. Oh, yes it was. But it will provide lots of ad ammo in Arizona and Nevada where I'd say this vote pretty much guarantees those two seats will flip.

I doubt it's reverence for SCROTUS, but, like the Kavanaugh hearings, a lot of people are made to realize it could be them on the receiving end.

This is how frontier families prevailed. Pa, Ma, about a dozen sons, half a dozen daughters, and they were all armed and could shoot the whiskers off a gnat.

  9. What in the heck is keeping justice Roberts from just finalizing the announcement, the ruling and get it over with?? Why is he stringing everyone along with the drama? Gutless wonder. After they all refused to even look at the massive voter fraud against trump, a pox on all of them.
