Frank Bruni of the New York Times tried to help Biden out today. Bruni only made things worse in a column headlined, "Biden’s Biggest Nightmare Is One He Didn’t See Coming."
Bruni admitted Biden was ill-prepared for the presidency. By publishing the column, NYT admitted it by proxy.
And for once, both are correct.
The column began, "As Joe Biden campaigned for the White House in 2020, he knew that the next president of the United States would govern under circumstances significantly more daunting than those that most faced.
"As he took the oath of office in 2021, he could see very clearly — in the tally of Covid-related deaths, in the economic and social devastation of the pandemic, in the country’s vicious partisanship — the immense scope and immeasurable difficulty of the work ahead.
"But he surely never expected this.
"Never expected war in Europe. Never expected a confrontation with Vladimir Putin of such urgency and unpredictable proportions. Never expected that his stack of challenges would grow this much taller, in this particularly terrifying way."
How could anyone not anticipate a war with Putin?
He has nukes. He's KGB. He wants to put the old Soviet empire back together again.
For Pete's sake, Biden was vice president when Putin took Crimea.
You can be darned sure, Donald John Trump was fully prepared for such a crisis. Why do you think he leaned on NATO allies to up their military spending?
Preparation led to peace. Putin knew better than to invade a neighbor because he knew President Trump would level Moscow and St. Petersburg. And Trump knew better than to expand NATO and spook Putin.
Biden on the other hand stiffed NATO on Afghanistan, abruptly surrendering the nation to the Taliban after 20 years of sacrifices by not only American soldiers but troops from around the globe.
Bruni's column quoted columns from other NYT writers. Peter Baker wrote, "No president had delivered his State of the Union address with such a large-scale and consequential land war underway in Europe since 1945."
In the 1990s, Bush 41 and Clinton gave SOTUs during a succession of wars: the war in Slovenia, the war in Croatia, the war in Bosnia and the war in Kosovo.
Prepare for war and pray for peace.

I agree -- Bruni & NYT make excuses for Biden's incompetence and corruption. But those attributes explain why Biden was "ill-prepared," "in over his head"... all euphemisms to describe a corrupt, self-centered, doddering horse's ass of an old man.

Russia spends US$65 billion annually.
The purpose of NATO expansion was to boost sales from US weapons contractors, weapons that will never be used.

Biden was never, ever presidential material. Look at his failed presidential runs. He had no significant accomplishments in the Senate for decades or as VP. He was only ever an accomplished grifter and blowhard. How anyone thought that this man would be prepared for being president and leader of the free world is beyond logical. He simply wasn't Trump and this has not worked at this particular point in history. Biden should be judged very harshly. He richly deserves it.

Honestly, lefty stenographers have been trotting out this line for as long as I can remember - at least as far back as the Clinton years. The take is always that the wonderful leftist that they managed to install in the WH hasn't been able to live out his transformative destiny because... the world just keeps "unexpectedly" tossing up "unexpected" problems.
Yep, it's that mean old world out there that interferes with the inevitable historic destiny of transforming the USA into a squalid Scandinavian-style welfare state. Funny how that keeps happening.
Anyone who takes on that office without the understanding that there is just, by history, a very high chance of being a "war President" is unfit for the office.

Anyone who didn't see that Russia was going to be trouble is a fool. For 20 years now, Putin has been bullying neighbors and stealing territory. With Ukraine, he's been through rigging an election (fail), buying an election (fail), seizing Crimea (success on its own, but), and basically splitting off two oblasts (success at first, but ultimately fail because he ran into so much resistance that he couldn't build further on that), and now finally a flat-out aggressive invasion (already a fail similar to his 2014 fail in Donetsk and Luhansk). Anyone who was oblivious to all this recent history should resign and go home.
Even just the CONCEPT that America has enemies is far too much for the snowflakes to comprehend. It’s like, “Why would people hate us? We’re leading the charge against Global Warming!” Fookin waterheads…
