Beware of billionaires who dabble in communism

Fittingly, Jeff Bezos looks like Lex Luthor now. In one of the Superman comics, Lex bought the fictional Daily Planet and turned it into a fascist rag. Bezos did not have to change a thing at the real life Washington Post.

Conservatives support billionaires because conservatives believe in capitalism, and wealthy people are one of the byproducts of capitalism. Once upon a time, wealthy people were content with their money and the things they bought. Social standing mattered. Maybe they were a tad insufferable, but they believed in and feared God.

They treasured honor more than anything because honor was the one thing money cannot buy.

Two-thirds of the 175 first class male passengers aboard the Titanic chose to go down with the ship. John Jacob Astor IV headed the list. He was 47. His fortune would be worth $2 billion today.

Today's billionaires would not be caught dead aboard a ship like that or a commercial airplane.

Go down with the ship? Are you a fool? They would pay someone else to take their place.

They treasure power above all. Bill Gates sucks up to Chairman Xi. Warren Buffett and Mark Zuckerberg would do anything for Democrats. George Soros finances the openly socialist wing of that party.

You have to have a certain amount of wealth to afford the luxury of socialism. These men are rich enough to be communists. And dumb enough to do so because while the people at the very top of the pyramid of communism are wealthy, it won't be them when the time comes.

But they are useful idiots who are helping to wipe out the middle class.

CNBC reported, "The world’s 10 richest people added $402 billion to their fortunes in 2021."

Soros didn't make the list but Musk, Buffett and the Microsoft, Facebook, and Google overlords did.

Meanwhile, Breitbart reported, "the top one percent of income earners in the U.S. now hold more wealth than the entire American middle class. Specifically, the middle class has seen its share of national wealth plummet to just 26.6% while the top one percent’s share of wealth has grown to 27% — the first time in U.S. history that the top one percent’s share of wealth has outpaced the middle class’s share of wealth.

"Since 1991, the top 20% of U.S. income earners have seen their share of national wealth grow by about 10 percentage points. The middle class, meanwhile, has seen its share of real estate, private businesses, and corporate equities decline in the past three decades."

This is the New World Order that Gorbachev and Bush 41 agreed to amid the collapse of the Soviet Union. Three decades before Biden surrendered our victory in the Afghanistan War. George H.W. Bush surrendered our victory in the Cold War.

The rise of Red China followed. That was no coincidence. Bush and the rest of the world condemned Tiananmen Square but rewarded Red China with trade deals. We were told that this would convert Red China to capitalism.

Instead, the biggest winners in capitalism are supporting communism. The middle class with their values of a work ethic and self-reliance are a threat to government control of every aspect of your life.

Why then are we beholden to the billionaires? With one notable exception, they can all go jump in a lake for all I care. They are selling America out.

The one saving grace of this gawdawful century is it is sobering up conservatives. This no longer is Ronald Reagan's America.

It is Lex Luthor's.

  1. Sadly, you are right. I am in complete agreement with your column. These really rich guys somehow think it is cool to play at being commies. COVID has helped the decline of the middle class and enriched these guys. Conservatives need to get sobered up good and fast. China is not becoming more like us. We are becoming more like them. I never liked 41 and now don't like 43.

  2. "The one saving grace of this gawdawful century is it is sobering up conservatives."

So, once they sober up, who will they vote for? Trump is the only one who ever kept campaign promises. He solved problems and Republicans hated him for that. Should they vote for more Republicans? Is the lesser of evils their only choice? For decades, the answer has been "yes." How messed up is that?

    1. Actually we did vote twice for Trump. Joseph Poopypants got 81,000,000 ballots Trump got
75,000,000 votes. We're not done with this thing.

  3. These days I look at my aging mom in law, living with us now and on her better days better than Joe Mama, and think about Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. We’re promised an ETERNITY with Him. What can Bezos/Luthor do to match that?

“Buy, buy says the sign in the shop window
Why, why says the junk in the yard”

  4. Sadly, capitalism at that level has evolved into crony capitalism. They pay off the government to kill competition. This I am not in favor of. Mom and pop business, yes. When we treat China like Cuba, maybe mom and pop will thrive again.

  5. I snicker when I think of the rich winding up the same way I do in death. They have forgotten that you can't take it with you when you die....we come into the world with nothing and we go out the same way.

  6. An interesting article, Don.
What do you suggest that a capitalist society should do with its members that excelled in capitalism, honestly and by hook or crook?
The one thing I can think of that is not anti capitalistic is to write a law of GIVING BACK.
The law should be fashioned to compel all levels of upperclass capitalists to annually give back a significant portion of their capital to the society that made their success possible in the form of a citizen's distribution of tax free income thereby lifting everyone's boat, and permitting everyone to cheer their increased success. Not a tax, a societal fee to practice capitalism.

    1. Yeah - Oh Gawd NO!!!! That's just theft, and note also that seizure of wealth is unconstitutional (for good reasons, which we see right here).

Note that another net-positive billionaire, Elon Musk is actually DOING things with space and getting them done - while Boeing and NASA can't even launch a champagne cork properly.

As Prof. Reynolds noted last week (only partially in jest), the only space power standing in China's way these days is... Elon Musk...

  8. Don, I have to disagree in general - and complaining about "billionaires" just on that ground alone is more bernie sanders (i - lunar orbit) than Donald Trump. Note that mr. b.s. used to rant against "millionaires and billionaires" - until HE (via grift) became a (multi-)millionaire himself; now he only rants against "billionaires."

It depends on the person and what they do with it. The list of billionaires is MUCH longer than just the bad examples depicted - and I don't begrudge people great wealth as a return for great effort, great risks, and great insights into building entire new industries. Bill Gates basically enabled the entire PC-based world - which actually reduced the costs of computation and democratized it so much that it could spread everywhere (and not just be the tight regime of a few large, ponderous corporations). Jeff Bezos invented the entire web-based commerce space. If these guys were now doing things like funding new companies and building angel flight networks, that would be good. They didn't have to become evil, but they chose to do that. But note that many billionaires are doing good things.

If you give the federal government too much power, people with money will try to buy influence; one of the best arguments for small, limited government is that this cannot happen.

Finally, note that one particular billionaire could have passed his time having fun. But he chose to save the country. God Bless Donald Trump, billionaire and all.

  9. A minor quibble, but these rich innovators are mostly creating new wealth and are not stealing the wealth of others. I certainly agree that (too) many of the richest seem to practice crony capitalism, working hand in hand cooperating with the evil democrats in a manner appearing all too similar to what might be termed fascism. Evil democrats however are happily stealing the wealth produced by others.

  11. They own the media, the schools, the byzantine halls of government, etc.

Anything We The People can do other than take it to the streets and decorate the lamp posts?

Actually I think there is, they own all the above but we own their toilets, their refrigerators, the shoes they walk in. Yes they may get them from China or Korea, but we service, maintain, repair all. I think even a little John Galt would go a long way toward educating them which side their bread is buttered on.

It became quite clear last 6 January the common man is not welcome in the halls of Congress. So, "Sorry sir, we can't get to those toilet repairs for 6-7 months, we're all booked up, meanwhile I suggest you open lots of windows."

"Yes sir the grocery delivery to D.C. is on the way, however due to unforeseen circumstances all the trucks had to detour via Waycross Georgia."

"You're looking for John Galt? Why yes sir I can tell you where to find him, go to the corner and turn right, turn right again at the next corner, and again at the next and then again at the next...."
