Smart model cashes $40 million check

The Real Deal reported, "Supermodel Adriana Lima shed her waterfront Indian Creek estate for $40 million, more than a decade after acquiring the home for just $9 million."

She's 40. She bought the four-bedroom, four-bathroom home in 2009 at a recession-driven 30% discount.

As with all real estate, what matters is location, location, location. The mansion is on a private 300-acre island with its own golf course in Miami’s Biscayne Bay. It is also called America's Billionaire Bunker.

The story said, "The island, north of Miami Beach, has long attracted the ultra wealthy.

"Homeowners include billionaire Carl Icahn – who is two doors down from Lima’s property – as well as billionaire hedge funder Eddie Lampert, Taubco CEO Irwin Tauber, Hotels.com co-founder Bob Diener, billionaire IndiGo airline co-founder Rakesh Gangwal, and Mary Anne Shula, the widow of the late Miami Dolphins coach Don Shula. Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner acquired a waterfront mansion on the island for $24 million in April."

The kicker is the buyer likely will demolish the mansion and build a bigger one on the two-acre lot.

I bring this up not because of the Rule 5 clickbait picture, but because it shows the other side of the life of models and female actresses.

Actresses like Alyssa Milano and Rose McGowan (who were co-star witches on the TV series Charmed) whine about how they cannot get jobs because they are over-40 actresses. That's the way it works. She had fame for 20 years. That's plenty. Next!

Actors face an age discrimination as well. Hollywood does not want young men. Harrison Ford was 35 when he broke through in Star Wars. Clint Eastwood was 34 when he started making spaghetti westerns.

The difference between Milano and Lima is that the latter accepted the reality of the ticking clock when she was in her 20s. That mansion was a good investment that more than quadrupled in price in 13 years.

As Marilyn Monroe sang (when she was in her 20s):

Men grow cold
As girls grow old
And we all lose our charms in the end
But square-cut or pear-shaped
These rocks don't loose their shape
Diamonds are a girl's best friend

Diamonds may have been a girl's best friend 70 years ago, but real estate is now.

Politics poison the well, as Milano found out. While she was out parading around Washington in a pink pussyhat and blaming Trump for her woes, Lima was modeling underwear and preparing for her retirement.

It is the classic tale of the Grasshopper and the Ant, or as I call it, the Liberal and the Conservative.

  2. Never liked that fable. A truer to life ant would have invited the grasshopper in for winter dinner.

  3. Same thing happens to Pro athletes. Mainly short careers, at least the models over 40 don't end up with injuries.

    1. Elections have consequences, unknown.

Those of us who are ants are prepared as best as we can be to go through the storm.

The woke Grasshoppers who have been "REEEEE!"ing their way through the 21st century are about to learn some very harsh lessons that most of them will not live long enough to profit from. Reality is a very cruel mistress indeed.

  5. For a comparison of male and female priorities:

Diamonds are a girl's best friend, but a man's best friend is his dog.

  6. Met and married my Wife when she was shy of 40. I found some of her correspondence with me back 33 years ago.
    I wouldn't trade her for a dozen supermodels/actresses.

  8. Adriana is Afro Brazilian. Our blacks could take a page from her playbook. She didn't rise up by complaining about being held down.
She is also strongly religious and opposed to infanticide.

  9. No looker and scrawny to boot.

She had fame for 20 years.

Milano was a child actress, so add another 10. The real issue is look for roles you can do.

F'rinstance, Olivia de Havilland was acting into her 70s, but she picked Mom roles and then Grandma roles.

  14. Don, regarding the concrete barriers being erected around the White House; they look like the shooting battlements at the top of castles, and the dark coloured squares may be hinged to drop down revealing their 50 cal. installations.
Ideal for preserving their democracy during the next visit by patriots.

  17. She better turn right around and invest in something physical. We are headed at the least for inflation out of control and the fed raising rates to heights unheard of since Jimmy Carter. This will shock the market and the private real estate and credit markets. Which will in turn raise the number of bankruptcies to very high numbers.

The only solution is to buy physical goods that will retain their value regardless of what the economy does. If your wealth is in digital bits representing anything you will wind up losing it all or losing the value in seconds after the decisions are made to do so.

If you buy metals don't be satisfied with a certificate. Possess the actual metal as certificates again are just digital bits that can disappear or be modified in seconds. Actual physical goods that is in your possession is the only way to retain your finances.
