The Associated Press reported, "Outlets hurt by dwindling public interest in news in 2021."
Given that AP's customers are the news media which pays for AP's services, one can hardly expect objectivity when AP reports on the media.
The data in this report are grim. In the last 12 months, the Washington Post's online traffic is down 44%. The New York Times is down 34%.
Prime-time viewership is down 38% at CNN, 34% at Fox, and 25% at MSNBC.
Nightly news viewership is down 14% at NBC, and down 12% at both ABC and CBS.
AP spun this as an off-year.
It began its story, "The presidential election, pandemic and racial reckoning were stories that drove intense interest and engagement to news outlets in 2020. To a large degree, 2021 represented the inevitable hangover."
The spin was both laughable and a symptom of the disease that is laying the media low.
"Racial reckoning"???
Really?
They were riots.
Oh, the media called the riots "mostly peaceful protests," which is why people tune the media out.
Then there is the vaccine. I have been vaccinated twice and likely will get a booster next month.
But, man, did the media oversell the vaccine.
In a March 29 broadcast, Rachel Maddow said, "Now we know that the vaccines work well enough that the virus stops with every vaccinated person… The virus does not infect them…It cannot use a vaccinated person as a host to get more people."
She is the reason I don't call PhD's doctor.
It is not that the public is no longer interested in the news. It is that the public no longer believes the news media is delivering the news.
The distrust is bipartisan.
On December 17, the Washington Times reported, "Republicans and Democrats don’t agree on much, but a new poll found that most voters from both parties agree that the mainstream news media promotes a political agenda rather than reporting the facts.
"The survey by the Trafalgar Group revealed that 76.3% of respondents from all political affiliations said that 'the primary focus of the mainstream media’s coverage of current events is to advance their own opinions or political agendas,' compared to only 23.7% who said news media was interested in 'finding and reporting the facts.'
"Voters on both sides of the aisle have grown frustrated with the inability of national television and print media to give them the undisputed facts of what’s happening in the world rather than political spin, said pollster Robert Cahaly, who founded Trafalgar Group in 2016."
The story also said, "A March 2020 Gallup poll of 536 employed adults found that Americans ranked the media’s handling of the covid-19 outbreak dead last in a list of nine institutions — with just 44% approving of the media’s handling of the pandemic, it was also the only institution to receive more negative than positive marks."
That was in March 2020, when the covid saga began. People intuitively knew to distrust the media because of years of lying.
The AP's spin is that the end of the Trump presidency caused the loss in audiences.
But the truth is, the way the media covered Trump up with lies, gossip, and just plain bullshit cost the media its credibility. And if you don't believe what they are saying, why tune in?
Hey, Taco Bell is my favorite fast food joint!
ReplyDeleteThe "media" have shot themselves in the feet, and then the fools shot themselves up to the head. No loss! Couldn't happen to nicer guys, and those guys, NICE is what they ain't!
ReplyDeleteI stopped watching TV and cable news long ago, preferring on-line sourcing for facts and information, and finally cut the TV cable. Yet, my older brother tells me by not watching I'm missing the best comedy on TV--the programs are laughable.
DeleteBoth sides are on my "read and filter with great skepticism" lists...
DeleteWhen you become Agnostic towards parties you gain objectivity. Both sides are juxtaposed propaganda shills selling half truths and party driven mythology.
And the Democrats are on my "DO NOT TRUST" list. The GOP is on my "maybe" list. Questionable...
ReplyDeleteBig D, it’s HAMAS-SHIELDING AP!!! As your agent, I advise you stick to the phrase that made Don Surber famous.
ReplyDeleteI really wonder about the numbers. Less than a million people watch CNN, but it gets quoted a lot and dunderheads like Blitzer, Tapper, Lemon, Fredo (before being axed) and Cooper are known by lots of people and often cited. Even Mr. Potato Head has a following. The Madcow is a cult figure to the left.
ReplyDeleteWhen I flip the channel to see what the enemy is talking about on CNN or MSNBC, I am wondering if I am really among the less than a million watching this garbage? That’s 0.003% of the country watching!!
What am I missing?
I am sure the number of site visits is down, but hard to believe the TV numbers. There are too many leftist idiots (I repeat myself) out there.
SL, it's like the attendance figures at a Biden rally. I always ask myself how many of those are PAID to be there?
DeleteIt's why I appreciate this blog so much; paying attention to the garbage media so that I don't have to. Thanks again Don!

DeleteDON! Do not get the BOOSTER shot!!1
ReplyDeletePeople intuitively knew to distrust the media because of years of lying.
ReplyDeleteThey were lying about the Vietnam War when they were the only game in town. The difference is now we can dig around and find out the truth.
The AP's spin is that the end of the Trump presidency caused the loss in audiences.
So, even by their own admission, they cut off their nose to spite their face.
And they think they're smarter than we are.
Donald Trump is a smart man and he has many abilities, but I think his greatest skill is his uncanny ability to get the Dims/MSM/RINOs to drop their facades and show us who they really are.
ReplyDeleteThe once (and hopefully future) President.
ZACKLY!
DeleteMaddow had a PhD. Hell, I didn't think even the genders studies were that stupid.
ReplyDeleteDon, Don't get the BOOSTER. You are killing your immune system. Just take your supplements (D3, Zinc, C, and stock up on Quercitin.
ReplyDelete“ I have been vaccinated twice and likely will get a booster next month.” oh well, it was nice reading your blog. I hope you have your affairs in order.
ReplyDeleteDon, with all the respect you are due, you appear to have a case of cognitive dissonance.
ReplyDeleteOn one hand, you know the truth about this Government, its media Commie liars, and Fauci and his henchmen, and you regularly speak to the issues, but yet, you take the clot shot?
I dont judge, but bro...like...wtf??
Wife with five comorbidities. I will die for the woman.
DeleteWell, you just might. Sadly. I get the love and protection angle. Knowing what you profess to know, regardless, doesn't add up for me. You do you. I told my wife what you said, and she admittedly also understood your chivalry, but that being said, she also expressed that if she really loved you, the way you love her, she would tell you to not take it, knowing how dangerous it is. I would die for my wife as well, but not this way. I have cancer, and it isnt a real good prognosis, my wife has profusely stated, under no circumstances, would she support me taking that kill shot. To protect anyone, including her. If you truly believe that taking that shot protects her, perhaps I misunderstand you and your words about this world plandemic. Seems to me the rubber don't meet the road, in regards to your words. Perhaps think about how strange it sounds, what you just said to me. Your wife gets 0 protection from you taking that jab, and I thought you were smarter than this. There is 0 proof that taking it makes the symptoms less for anyone, including those with co-morbidities. Again, why this escapes you is beyond me. You may be a good man, but you have fallen for the BS, and there is no way around it. The people who have told you this are the very same liars pushing it! Cognitive dissonance sir, and your chivalry doesnt change it either. I feel for you both, but youve lost me here. Good luck to you both sir. no disrespect intended. Im sill trying to square your words with reality. Im not seeing it....sorry bro.
DeleteThe cable companies were forced to buy very expensive packages for groups of channels, I recall that ESPN at its height was over $7 a month in the total package cost. Well the greed of Disney priced the cable package above reason, now with streaming why would anyone buy Cable TV. But that put CNN, MSNBC, etc away as the package is gone, viewers now must seek out their sites - many don't as it is clearly fiction.
ReplyDeleteHow do we now get the population to tune into sites that are fair and balanced, or preferably red. Now, how to turn Facebook into the next Myspace.
