Woke is too kind a word for this story because Scientific American now approves of discrimination based on race and sex.
A great story fell into the publication's lap. The American Geophysical Union refused to award a prize for excellence in science because all five candidates were white males.
What kind of nonsense is that? Do the members of the prize committee eschew flight because the Wright Brothers were white males? Do they walk rather than drive a car, ride a bicycle, or ride a motorcycle because all of them were invented by white males? Ditto trains. Ditto telegraph. Ditto radio. Ditto TV.
Rather than take this committee to task, Scientific American praised the daffy decision to deny these men an honor they earned simply because of the color of their skin and their maleness.
The story was headlined, "Nominees for a Science Award Were All White Men—Nobody Won. A protest by a group of scientists has ignited spirited discussions about the persistent lack of diversity in such awards."
Five committee members were reviewing the nominees for the American Geophysical Union’s fellows program.
Helen Fricker, a glaciologist at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and one of the five committee members, noticed the nominees were all white men.
She said, "That was kind of a bit of a showstopper for me."
Fricker may as well hang up a sign: White men need not bother to apply.
She said, "One of the reasons I was put on the committee was because I’d been quite vocal about the year that I’d been a fellow, I was very much in the minority, and we needed to do better and get more women."
So the emphasis no longer is on good science but on race and sex. 19th century discrimination has returned in the 21st century. This time the targets are white males.
Its advocates do not realize two things. The white men they are punishing now did not discriminate against anyone. They were raised to oppose bigotry. Their reward is to be discriminated against. Lesson learned.
The other thing is that by engaging in discrimination now, women and "people of color" are making the case for past discrimination.
The Scientific American story was bizarre in other ways. It said, "The decision has triggered a spirited dialogue among AGU members and other earth scientists about the persistent lack of diversity in science awards — and how to address it.
"Within the AGU fellows program, it’s a pervasive issue. AGU selected a total of 59 fellows this year, and 45 of them are men. Additionally, 46 of the fellows are from the U.S., while only 13 are from other countries."'
Only 13?
It is the AMERICAN Geophysical Union. It seems to me, 13 foreigners is 13 too many.
These fellowships are important to one's employment and one's reputation.
Buried 25 paragraphs into the story was any reaction to this terrible decision to deny a scientist his due.
Raymond Bradley, director of the climate system research center at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, was displeased.
He said, "What the committee should have done is what they were tasked to do, which is to select from the nominations they received the best people and put them forward.
"At the same time they could recognize that there aren’t enough nominations being received from women and underrepresented groups, and they could shake up their members and say, 'Hey, come on, let’s nominate more people.'"
But the publication said, "Simply drumming up more nominations isn’t as simple a solution as it might sound, said Twila Moon, a scientist with the National Snow & Ice Data Center."
Moon said the pandemic hit women and minorities hardest. That's not quite true. Covid killed more men than women. And 52% of those with covid were white, while 59% of the covid deaths were among white people.
What got me to write this piece was this line in the story about why more women and more minority people were not nominated, "Writing nominations requires time and effort."
So the time and effort of white men does not matter to Scientific American.
That's good to know.
Discrimination is discrimination, and discrimination is wrong. This is not a payback because Bull Connor, Strom Thurmond, Bob Byrd, and all the rest are long gone.
The people these virtue signaling bigots are punishing are men who dedicated their lives to science only to be blocked at the fellowship door by a woman screaming, "Diversity today, diversity tomorrow, diversity forever."
Diversity was a #1 priority for Biden's selection of his cabinet and staff. You can glance around the country now and see the benefits we all reap from that move.
ReplyDeleteCompetency was also an issue on his list, any who had even a smidgen were passed over.
DeleteI believe Helen should be requested to resign as she is unable to fulfill the duties of the role she is assigned. Does the award criteria include skin color and sex in the selection of the finalists or the award winner? STEP DOWN HELEN!
DeleteWe are witnessing in Biden's America is a race to the bottom of the barrel.
DeleteI wonder if Asians are being cut out too, being the"Other white?" As one who has h d scientific training, written papers as an undergrad, I cannot believe the political "Science " of today. You could develop a cure for cancer, cook up a working
ReplyDeletefusion reactor, and build your own spaceship, and go to alpha centauri. But because you are a "white"
American, forget it... Jim Crow is back in town, looking for white people.
Don't you remember, it was just within the past year, Joe Brandon promised to cure cancer? Been there, done that...
DeleteThank you Democrats.
DeleteI have always been in a male dominated field in one way or another all my life. I actually was raised to excellent in STEM but that requires math, science and not the 2 + 2 equals whatever the h*ll I feel like going on today. It requires work and dedication to learn. It also requires a mindset. I have a friend that knew 12 languages and spoke fluently in 10 of 12. She could not add 2+2 and get 4. She was brilliant in other areas than me. (I'm not brilliant but I excel in logical science. I cannot pick up a language to save my soul).
ReplyDeleteWhat the AGU is doing is dragging everyone down because they don't see enough diversity. So they should market their sciences to the girls and others in k-12, not just whine, and get new blood interested in their fields. Science / college prep wasn't popular in school in my day which was a long time ago. It's less popular now and it takes work to learn. work most kids won't put in the work, unless they get the encouragement. Also they need to be shown that there is more to the world than they know.
It's not an attractive field because it demands attention to detail, meticulous record keeping and in the case of research some actual creative thinking.
DeleteThere is an Asian woman I know who is struggling to work and go to college.
Deleteshe gets the feeling that because she is asian, she' persona non grata by certain (female of color professors.) One is a Pak
who wears her hajib in class but tell Christians to not wear their crosses because"It's devisive.".
A while back I saw a letter sent out by a school. It informed parents they would soon be getting test results but not to over react noting that their future award winning chef probably would never use algebra along with several other comparisons. Men's and women's brains are wired differently. Different people excell at different things. Schools should be looking to guide kids toward a field of work that fits their personalities and abilities. The skill set for a doctor is different from a truck driver, but America would be screwed if we didn't have them. Same for lawyers... Oh wait, we're screwed because we have them.
DeleteAmen. Its stupid to assume everyone is the same. Instead of supporting and celebrating the kids / adults strengths, they are doing the opposite. Everyone is needed and necessary, and why work at a job you hate? Find something you enjoy and have the aptitude for.
DeletePretty soon, mediocrity will be the high water mark for American excellence.

“The soft bigotry of low expectations…” Ah, for the salad days of Dubya. Today, it’s the HARD bigotry of NO expectations. We’re all goin’ back to Africa, y’all, without a Second Civil War.
ReplyDelete“So take me to the airport
And put me on a plane
I’ve got no expectations
To pass
Through here
Again…”
zackly z...this song has been going thru my noggin for days now since the story came out about how we Americans need to lower our expections...SMDH.
DeleteOTOH, what an amazing album written by the Glimmer Twins so many years ago. Starting with Sympathy for the Devil and finishing with Salt of the Earth which includes these eerie lyrics (so apropos in the Old Dominion with our election next week):
"Spare a thought for the stay-at-home voter
Empty eyes gaze at strange beauty shows
And a parade of the gray-suited grafters
A choice of cancer or polio"
Rock on brother...let's go Brandon!
HH, I can't lower my expectations for Xiden, I never expected him to do anything right.
DeleteThey say more women need to be nominated and/or in the STEM fields. But it's the WOMEN who are choosing not to go into those fields.
ReplyDeleteIt can't all be sexism in education. And if it is then it's progressives that are doing the discrimination because that's who is running the Universities/Colleges. And if they say that women aren't being promoted then they should explain if that's the case why aren't there some women who performed to the standard that the White Men did?
And why is it a universal situation across national borders.
So expect to see more aid and relaxed standards to get young women in the STEM fields and more white young men discouraged from doing so by counselors and the fact that there's no help or relaxed standards for them.
So out of self defense the men quit and go into business for themselves in the trades or other types of service businesses where they brains and organizational skills can bring them more money.
Who cares if bright young men are denied access to STEM fields and perhaps may have brought new ideas to their fields because that's not important.
Let's also remember that a couple years ago a Man was nominated for woman of the year... And won.
DeleteMy youngest sister was encouraged in high school to pursue chemistry. She didn’t because, however talented she was in science, she preferred music. She ended up as the founding director of a school of music, building it up over nine years into a widely acknowledged gem in that country (not the U.S.).
DeleteIt’s not intelligence or willingness to work hard that keeps women out of STEM fields. It’s their preferences and choices.

Mediocrity is already the gold standard of politics. Excellence, as President Trump learned the hard way, must never go unpunished.
ReplyDeleteWhat can we trust from the "press"? Lies, more lies, bigger lies...and prevarications flooding out out of their wazoos! Which stinks to high Heaven.
ReplyDelete"Scientific American" is now "Scientific Anti-American."
""The decision has triggered a spirited dialogue among AGU members and other earth scientists about the persistent lack of diversity in science awards — and how to address it." PIECE OF CAKE!! Take the names off the papers, give each one a different color, send them to the judges, and let them decide!
Scientific American went loony-left decades ago. Back in the 1980s they were anxious to publish articles white-washing Soviet bio/chem weapons programs - and then asked for "the other side" and then totally rewrote the material that the authors provided.
DeleteWhat you propose is a good idea - it's called "blind review" and many journals use that method (a manuscript goes out for peer review with no names on it). Back in the day, the judges in Spanish flamingo dancing competitions would sit *under* the stage - they would not see the competitors, but would judge them by their footfalls.
Keep in mind that all this "diversity" (sic) claptrap is basically a way for elite whites who didn't earn their positions in life (great-grandpa did, and they are free-riding on ancestry) to suppress competition from non-elite whites (the largest pool of potential competitors) - anti-competitive practices and they get brownie points for it to boot. (And this is why ivy league schools have "legacies.")
ReplyDeleteThis also demonstrates that white men in STEM fields are not part of the elite. The nominees should get together and file a civil rights suit - they have a good case.
I've worked for nearly two decades with numerous universities in eastern Europe, and women are very well-represented in the STEM fields (in Ukraine, it's 50% or more). Women not being in STEM fields is their choice. It's been suggested that to attract more women, STEM programs should add courses on "the social implications of technology." Let's make the bridge more likely to collapse! And some wit noted that since men are grossly underrepresented in nursing programs, courses should be added in professional sports and heavy equipment operation.
A final aspect of an incident like this is, no surprise that STEM jobs get located to other countries...
Ukrainian women...mmmm...but I digress
Deletey'know, I attended an engineering school in the late 60s and the freshman class was 900+ guys and 30 young ladies...who had their own freakin' dorm! Now it is about 2:1 male/female which would be weird to an old engineer like myself, but I suppose I could get used to it...
Martin Luther Who?
ReplyDeleteWe have returned to discrimination. I never would have imagined this in my lifetime. A decadent, lazy and pampered society has the time and money to worry about too many male nominees. I don't know what we're made of anymore. Whining, crying and complaining. That's what society seems to be made of for many. Sad....
ReplyDeleteIf there had been just one nomination of a female or non-white, is there any question who this committee would have selected as the most accomplished and deserving?
ReplyDeleteWhat you have here is all five nominees getting the same treatment that four were destined to receive if the fifth nominee had been an OTWM.
The American Geophysical Union Haas rocks for brains.
ReplyDelete"What got me to write this piece was this line in the story about why more women and more minority people were not nominated, "Writing nominations requires time and effort."
ReplyDeleteSo does science. Lots of time and effort. Advanced university degrees, too. Is Scientific American's damning implication that...
Ignavus in unum, ignavus in omnibus.
The left and their ilk don't like history. They really don't.
ReplyDeleteThe centers of technology ages back were Greece, Rome, and also China. China then faded.
Romans created a government with a Senate (such as it was). Although they were deviant and sociopathic, they advanced technology in extreme ways. Water transportation viaducts, a few still in use today, architecture, sanitation, roads, weapons and such were unmatched. Italians were on the forefront of astronomy, physics, and other sciences.
Moving forward in time, most technological advances came from these countries: Italy, France, England, Germany. Then the US. Almost every modern technology was created by white men. This is a irrefutable fact. The "amazing American Indian" never invented the freaking wheel. The entire continent of Africa was dark until white men brought in technology. Russia was always lagging behind, as was China.
Modern technology did not get here en masse by "people of color" or women. I know that sucks for some people, but that is the way it was. That's called history. People should pick up a book.
And let's not forget the fact that in its 121 years, more than 200 Jews have won Nobel Prizes, mostly in the sciences and economics.

And why were all the candidates white males. Because all the best science is being done by white males, along with a small minority of men from the Far East
ReplyDeleteHas always been so. But if you ruin the incentives, that will cease. And so will good science. Doesnt anyone take Microeconomics anymore?
So, are white men 'separate but equal' now? I can't wait until we get out own water fountains and get to sit in the back of the bus.
ReplyDeleteAre NBA individual awards next?
ReplyDeleteWhile I am certain their are many other-than-white scientists doing good work, even award-quality work, this is totally discriminatory and even Affirmative Action-based thinking.
