Forget her murderer. Who was Sharma Ruth Johnson?

Newsweek ran a sob story about Willie B. Smith III, the man who murdered Sharma Ruth Johnson, 22, on the night of October 26, 1991. She was at an ATM. He did not know her. He asked her for directions to a fast-food restaurant.

Then he pulled a sawed-off shotgun, ordered her into his trunk, and with his girlfriend, Angelica Willis, cleaned out the last $80 from her bank account.

The Trussville (Alabama) Tribune reported, "The suspects then drove to Huffman to pick up Willis’ brother. Angelica Willis testified that once her brother learned the woman was in the trunk, he taunted her. The three then drove to Zion Memorial Cemetery, where Smith shot Johnson, execution-style. Willis said before the shooting she and her brother tried to tell Smith he didn’t have to kill her. She said Smith told Johnson, 'I’m going to have to kill you' because he thought she would call the police. He then shot her in the head.

"A secret recording of Smith explaining to his friend what happened was later played in court."

He randomly picked out a stranger and then executed her for $80.

Newsweek made him a hero with its "Who Is Willie Smith? Alabama Death Row Inmate With IQ in the 70s Set to be Executed."

The magazine did not disclose Sharma Ruth Johnson's IQ.

The liberal argument is he is too stupid to be executed.

And yet he was not too stupid to execute a woman for a lousy $80.

His girlfriend testified against him and received 25 years in prison.

Forget them.

Who was Sharma Ruth Johnson?

She was a manager at the TCBY in Trussville. Shelley Luna, told the Tribune said, "I’ve known her since seventh grade. She was one of the sweetest people you would ever meet. Just very humble."

Was.

The Montgomery Advertiser reported, "Johnson was the sister of a Birmingham police detective."

That was it. The headline said, "Who was Sharma Ruth Johnson? What we know about the murder of a 22-year-old Alabama woman in 1991."

They should know more.

There is no online obituary, but surely the newspaper library had stories about her murder.

But the press now plays up murderers instead of victims. The Los Angeles Times had the audacity earlier this year to run a column, "Alabama prepares to execute another black man, under laws going back to slavery."

Well, if we are going to bring up race, Sharma Ruth Johnson was white. To America's media, it is OK to execute her for no reason at all but it is wrong to execute him because he is black.

And they now capitalize black, not white, in their accounts.

I did not know what color she was when I began this post. I just wanted to find out who the victim was after reading about her murderer.

That I still cannot answer.

But I do know that had Smith and Willis not selected her for a robbery and execution, she would be 52 and likely a mother and a grandmother. Maybe she would have stayed in Trussville. Its population soared from 2,985 when she was born to 22,635.

And I know one other thing. The press now prefers murderers to their victims.

  1. The fact that it took thirty years to execute that animal is insane and unforgivable.

    2. Seems that right and wrong, good and bad have no meaning any longer. Even the animal world does not kill except for survival. Willie B. Smith and his partners have apparently not evolved that far yet. I don't care what color either the victim or the killers were. You take someone's life like this and you have to pay the price. Doesn't bring back the victim but it sends a needed message to all those who don't value human life.

  2. My last paycheck was $2500 for working 12 hours a week online. My sisters friend has been averaging 8k for months now and she works about 30 hours a week. I can't believe how easy it was once I tried it out. The potential with this is endless.

    1. I seriously doubt his IQ was that low. The racist press claim every black on death row has an IQ of 70. Yup, subhumans unable to survive in the white man's world without a hand out.
As for the reporter, 70 might be a good day.

    2. 70 is the average IQ of natives of sub-Saharan Africa. Look it up. Despite this level of intellectual functioning they seem to survive quite handily in their native environment. So then explain to me why this sub-human African should have been given another thirty years of life and then become the subject of this piece of hagiography in Newspeak Magazine just prior to his quite justifiable execution?

    3. Actually, with an IQ of 70, he was above average for blacks. The average IQ's in Africa run between 60-65.That's why they are called "developing nations".

  6. y'know I could make some remarks that reflect my rage and the story would suddenly morph into how hateful my language is and ignore this poor girl's story completely...SMDH

I've often said that a dozen young kids of color could be shot in SE DC today, but if someone overheard a white cop in NW DC using the n-word in a moment of anger, that would be the lead story on the local news...they can't fry this guy soon enuff for me

    1. Dont fry him. Make him and his suffer. Japan for centuries would execute (forfeit is the term used) the entire family of the criminal. Same for arsonists. Important rule when entire cities are built with wood and paper walls. TheOlder I get better it sounds. The IQ issue? Google world 🌎 IQs. Average IQ of an entire part of the world is 70-75. Cant/won’t identify which part of the world. See for yourself. Sub 83 IQ and the US Army kicks a person out of boot camp. Why? Untrainable regardless of time spent attempting to get the horse to drink. Time to start paying low IQ people to be neutered. Sounds horrible but look at the alternative.

  8. Back in the days of "Slavery" Willie B. would most certainly have been hung or possibly set on fire and then hung by the town fathers. His girlfriend and his brother likely sharing his fate as well. Ms. Johnson would always be the victim of a group of depraved savages the message would be delivered that the community " Thou shall not murder". In life you get what you tolerate, Willie B. Smith IIIs. Concealed Carry Permit. Be the good guy with a gun.

  9. I don't understand how being stupid is a mitigating factor in murder, unless the person is so stupid they didn't understand how guns work. The low IQ argument is just a way to weaken the death penalty, since it's going to apply to most inmates on death row -- the evil genius criminal exists only in James Bond movies.

    Drive to specific locations
Operate an ATM well enough to clean out an account
Realize he had to commit the murder in a secluded

  14. Its actually worse than that, Equatorial Guinea on the west coast of Africa has the lowest national IQ average in the world, it's 58. Most of the surrounding countries are in the 60's. Mr.Smith would considered "gifted" IQ wise, in most of these countries and yet, he would have been executed many years ago for murder. The justice system in this country is broken

  15. Ohio Republicans ALSO prefer murderers to victims. SB256 gives teen killers sentenced to life without parole a "meaningful opportunity for release," and Mr. Surber wrote a great column about it: https://donsurber.blogspot.com/2021/07/ohio-rinos-let-killers-go-free.html

  19. Maybe I'm just not nice, but rather than giving someone who is obviously, inarguably, guilty, any time in prison. I'd be cool with waking him up, dragging him out tossing him in the trunk, riding around, talking about how he's gotta die then stop, drag him out of the trunk, put him on his knees and put a bullet in the back of his head.

Put That story on the news for a few days.

  22. Oh Don, thank you for this. Every time I see an article about a criminal getting his due there is NEVER a picture of their victim. So, I always search for the victim and that's why I ended up here. Sharma was really just a child and how frightened beyond belief she must have been riding in that trunk. And then to know what were the last words she heard. Plus to learn (no mention in original article that brought me here) that two other despicable individuals took part in this atrocious act of violence. 30 years too late for this guy and I don't feel one bit sorry for his ass.

  23. My first time here bc I also decided to see who this poor young girl was, Miss Sharma Ruth Johnson; I also wonder what happened to the other two accomplices? I also cringe thinking about her last moments, never thinking going to a cash machine would be her last moments on this earth; her family also suffered each and every day of the never ending thought of their little girl alone, frightened beyond belief, of how and why she must die; we seem to protect the criminal and accept it as an everyday occurrence; I don't care about the color of ones skin, I was raised better than that; raised to look beyond ones ethnic background and born in the South Bronx, New York. No one should be hurt they was she was for no reason at all. Did they have to kill her? why not let her live! But fear of getting caught seemed to give them no choice; but look here, he spend decades in a system, a roof over his head, meals everyday, books to read, television, a better life than what he gave her; I may not know much about inside jail life, but he did still have the chance to live, she never did. KARMA has a way of sneaking up without notice; we should be better to each other, kinder, more giving from the soul for other humans but it seems our world is crumbling and us along with it.
