How Republicans could take the Senate this year

There are only 48 Democrats in the Senate. Outnumbered by Republicans, Democrats hold the majority thanks to independents Bernie Sanders and Angus King, and the tie-breaking vote of Kamala Harries

Democrats may fall to 47 as Kyrsten Sinema may be contemplating a move to becoming independent.

That may or may not flip the Senate depending on how badly she wants to get back at party bosses.

Josh Marshall thinks she will bolt.

He reported, "Sinema Cueing Up To Go Indy."

He wrote, "Absolutely fascinating look at Kyrsten Sinema’s efforts to position herself as an independent in Arizona, possibly formally but definitely in effect. It makes pretty clear she’s not done with politics or angling for a high dollar lobbying gig, as some speculate. She thinks she can be a latter-day McCain and build her political brand on that basis, likely looking for a promotion above the Senate. TPM Reader GT, a registered independent in Arizona, walks us through the view from in-state as well as the mailers he’s been getting on Sinema’s behalf from something called the “Center Forward” PAC run out of New Jersey and chaired by former Alabama Rep. Bud Cramer (D).

"I remain pretty confident that Sinema has misjudged the politics. But as GT makes clear, there’s no question she has a plan and is following it in a very considered way."

She already is to Democrats what Jeff Flake was to Republicans.

After going through her history of moving from hippie to moderate, Marshall cited the main reason she may move to independent. Opportunity,

He wrote, "I’ve heard various stories of her fairly dramatically misreading rooms and making jarring or ill-timed comments. My sense is that now she’s just misreading the national room. The ambition part is key to appreciate since some people seem to think she’s bored with the Senate and ready to move on or angling for a high priced lobbying gig. That’s clearly not the case. She’s just as focused on advancement within elected politics as most other pols. The DGAF theory doesn’t fly. She clearly thinks this is her path to national office."

Sinema may be on to something. Democrats have become a Soviet gerontocracy. A party that elected a 47-year-old man as president has, 13 years later, saddled the nation with a 78-year-old grifter.

There is a large part of the party that wants to halt the slide to socialism but they are outflanked by self-righteous activists like AOC swooping in from Westchester to represent the masses. But I don't see how that would help her. More than likely, they will stop voting. When they return to voting, it will be as Republicans.

At any rate, Republicans should encourage her independence. Who knows? She might make McConnell majority leader just to spite Schumer.

  1. Plus, she is currently the ONLY Democrat female Senator that is even halfway bangable. Heck, on further review, she is the only bangable Senator, PERIOD. NEVER underestimate the power of bangability in politics if you’re a chick. It means more than you might think and we guys are willing to put up with some transgressions in exchange for bangableness. Right, Kristi? 😂😂😂

    5. I believe she once declared herself to be bisexual.

However, that does not diminish her bangability--especially for a 45-year old. I find her "adorably dorky" look quite alluring. Plus she's quite well-developed to boot.

    6. She's only bangable if I can get a sturdy grill guard to slap on the big truck.
      I wouldn't screw her with edutcher's dick.

  2. I think she is also angling for the re-alignment that is coming in the senate. Warnock appears to be a two year one hit wonder, as Walker will more than likely wipe him out in 2022. And now with Laxalt coming on board in Nevada, she may be working to utilize her flexibility to caucus with the GOP afterwards, and then look for either a cabinet position with say a DeSantis administration or run for governor when Ducey is done.

  5. Reading way too many tea leaves.
If she goes GOP, she will be primaried and probably lose that.
She is used to being on minority side, as she is a Democrat in a pretty red state, at least when it comes to state politics.
So, don't read too much into this.

  7. Yeah, agree with the stuff that we probably shouldn't read too much into this. This sounds like the kind of "inside baseball" (i.e., inside-the-beltway) stuff that DC thrives on and which swamp critters like to gossip about (LOUDLY) at cafes and bars after hours.

Practically, though, for right now I'll take any help we can get to block the disasters that the left is trying to foist on us while they think they have the chance. If the country is saved by Senator Manchin and/or Senator Sinema... I'll take it.

What's different at least is that in DC, "growing" and/or "evolving" usually means "moving to the left"; this is bizarre, since usually growing up and becoming adult means moving in the opposite way - so if Ms. Sinema has done this, again, I'll take it. Really, most of the "68ers" eventually grew out of it and became normal people with normal lives - and the ones who didn't are now pathetic old coots in their 70s who are still acting like they are at woodstock, and have wasted their lives living the 68er lies...

But indeed, there have to be a few at-least-semi-sane donks who look at their party's leadership (both the D's and the "independents," such as senator phoghorn (i - lunar orbit)) and realize that it indeed looks like the 1980s soviet leadership standing on lenin's tomb for the may day parade.

  8. Sen Sinema isn't making any big decisions until she's see how gun-grabbing Uncle Fester does in his 2022 Senate reelection bid. My bet is Fester won't do well now that the crooked Maricopa County Recorder Adrian Fontes is out. Fontes threw the 2018 elections towards Sinema, SecState Katie Hobbs and Education Poobah Kathy Hoffman, all Ds that won long after election declared their R opponents the winners. Futher, we all know the mess the 2020 election was in Maricopa County.

  9. Assuming it is true that this self-serving, political opportunist (but I'm being redundant), is re-positioning herself for a better shot at a higher level of international grift (like Joe Biden & family), why should (non-RINO at least) Republicans encourage her? To possibly bolster Mitch McConnell and his never-Trump comrades? No, thanks. To paraphrase Napoleon Bonaparte, "When the enemy is engaged in internal disharmony, wait awhile, keep quiet, and don't interrupt it."

They only need a few Blue Dogs or other "moderates" to join them to strip the criminally insane socialists of power in the House.

  27. The enemy of my enemy is my friend? This is not a winning alliance but if it can slow down the dissolution of the Republic at the hands of zealous Marxists thinly veiled as Democrats, we'll take it. Waiting to the midterms while under siege is a long wait. Especially when the Marxists want to codify election and voter fraud as the law of the land. as an insurance policy that all their concerted fraud and illegal activities can never be reversed by the voting public.
