Democrats near a civil war

The detestable House Democrat Jim Clyburn took on the detestable Senate Democrat Joe Manchin in a HuffPo interview in which Clyburn implied that Manchin is rayyyyyyycist for opposing the repeal of the filibuster.

The 50 Democrats in the Senate lack the 60 votes they would need to pass H.R. 1, which would have the federal government run elections. Heck, they may lack the 50 votes they would need if there were no filibuster. (Kamala would break any 50-50 tie.)

As I understand it, the bill would codify the underhanded tactics Democrats used to steal the last election. They jacked up the black vote through ballot harvesting.

Republicans need to learn to ballot harvest.

For now, Manchin opposes ending the filibuster. Give him time. He will sell out.

Clyburn is black and for decades has used his skin color to gain power within the party and credibility within the media. He has learned that all he has to do is cry Jim Crow to get his way. 

But that may backfire if Manchin takes Clyburn's public remarks personally.

Clyburn told HuffPo, "I’m insulted when he tells me that it’s more important to maintain a relationship with the minority in the U.S. Senate than it is for you to maintain a relationship with the minority voters in America. That’s insulting to me."

Well, who the heck should care if Clyburn is or isn't insulted?

And he is wrong. Republicans are not a minority in the Senate. There are as many Republican senators as there are Democrat senators.

Clyburn knows the clock is ticking. The thin majority Democrats hold in the House will likely vanish in next year's midterms. History shows that it is highly likely that Democrats will lose control of both houses of Congress.

Their one hope they believe is to stop Republicans from requiring voter ID and ending politicking outside the polls.

Clyburn is worried that Georgian voters will kick Democrat Raphael Warnock to the curb and out of the Senate. 

The House mouse said, "“Since when do their rights take precedence over your fellow Democrat Warnock, who saw his state just pass laws to keep him from getting reelected? And you’re going to say it’s more important for you to protect 50 Republicans in the Senate than for you to protect your fellow Democrat’s seat in Georgia. That’s a bunch of crap."

Clyburn then cried Jim Crow.

He said, "The issue of civil rights and voting rights, these constitutional issues, should never be sacrificed on the altar of the filibuster. I’ve been saying that for a long time."

People say lots of stuff over and over again but that still does not make it true.

HuffPo did not talk to Manchin, but Fox included a statement from Manchin in its re-write of the interview story.

He said, "America's declining trust in the government and each other makes it harder to solve key problems.

"That trust will continue to diminish unless we, as members of Congress, transcend partisanship to strengthen our democracy by protecting voting rights, implementing commonsense election security reforms, and making our campaign finance system more transparent.

"Pushing through legislation of this magnitude on a partisan basis may garner short-term benefits, but will inevitably only exacerbate the distrust that millions of Americans harbor against the U.S. government."

I agree with that last paragraph.

Too bad Manchin doesn't.

Or does he? If Clyburn gets Manchin's dander up, the sellout will not take place. That would be most unfortunate for the Democrat Party, but a great relief to the country.
