After two decades of war, General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is pushing Chairman Xiden to continue the Afghanistan War indefinitely.
Milley's argument is that if we leave, bad guys will take over and do bad things.
Vox reported there was a meeting on what to do about Afghanistan.
The story said, "During the meeting, according to four sources from the White House, Pentagon, and elsewhere familiar with what happened, Milley made an impassioned — and at times emotional, according to some — case to consider keeping U.S. troops in the country.
"Milley, who was the deputy commanding general of US forces in Afghanistan and served three tours in the country, essentially argued that if American forces fully withdraw by May 1, it would open the door for the Taliban to overtake the country, making life worse for millions of Afghans and imperiling US national security goals.
"Women’s rights 'will go back to the Stone Age,' Milley said, according to two of the sources. He argued that it wasn’t worth leaving the country after 'all the blood and treasure spent' there over the last two decades. He also added that, in his view, the lack of 2,500 US troops in Afghanistan would make it harder to stem threats from a nuclear-armed Pakistan."
Excuse me, but women's rights were not the reason we invaded Afghanistan.
We invaded Afghanistan in 2001 to decimate al-Qaida and kill Osama bin Laden. It took 10 years, but the mission was accomplished. Obama should have brought the troops home but he had a re-election campaign coming up that he did not want to jeopardize, and after that, he forgot about Afghanistan.
Donald Trump did not.
He cut a deal with the Taliban to withdraw all U.S. troops by May 1. Chairman Xiden will decide whether we honor that agreement.
Yes we spent a lot of money, injured thousands of our soldiers, suffered almost 2,400 combat deaths, and killed about 100,000 civilians and terrorists.
To his credit, Secretary of Defense General Lloyd Austin said, "We’re not going to make decisions based on emotion."
I hope Austin prevails. We shall see. But the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff should concentrate on defending our country instead of promoting women's rights in the Third World.

DeleteCustomers always tell me, after I advise against it that they have to put more money into their totally worn out car because they've already fixed so many things and spent so much money, etc. I always tell them that just because you've put thousands of dollars into a 19 year old 279,000 mile totally worn out, rusted out piece of s**t that won't pass inspection and is worth scrap value only doesn't mean you have to keep going. There is a law of diminishing returns and we reached it long ago in Afghanistan.

DeleteWhen Milley raises issues like women's rights as a reason to keep troops there, it causes me to be even more suspicious that other motives are driving push. That country is rich in certain plants from which certain drugs are made. Afghanistan has been a source of opium since forever.

I've lived in the Turd World. A lot. It's not gonna change. America is an unusual exception to the natural state of man. They're swamping our lifeboat instead of learning to swim in their own pond. They must bloom where they're planted and that's not made any easier by having the USA being seen as the relief valve.

In 2000 the Taliban outlawed growing opium poppies and by 2001 production will nil. That created a huge problem for the drug dealers in the deep state.
So they invaded to reverse this policy and installed Hamid Karzia as president. Then they appoint Hamid's drug dealing brother to get the opium fields growing again.
Isn't it strange how the Karzai family was living in the USA for years before 2001? Isn't it strange how the CIA got caught funneling billions in cash bricks to the Karzai government so it couldn't be tracked?

No way the deep state leaves Afghanistan! Even if you pull all the public soldiers they'll insert private soldiers instead. It would cost them more so they'd rather not resort to using their mercenary forces.
As for Bin Laden, Sy Hersh wrote a book just about his alleged killing. I'll trust him for a source before anyone from the deep state. Too bad Surber won't.
Investigative journalism is dead. We need more like Sy Hersh and Chris Hedges and Jack Anderson because that's where the rubber meets the road for any reporter.

Human rights to one side, I think it pays to look at the big picture here. What's really going on? There is logic - strategic logic - to keeping well-equipped US bases on both the east and west flanks of Iran, as in Afghan and Iraq. Also, a bonus, the US currently engages with Turkmenistan to Iran's north on border security. So, if containment of 'Death To America' Iran is a policy of US national security - is it? - maintaining an equipped military presence on the ground in close quarters seems awfully prudent to me. I'd be hesitant to cede that territory to other global players waiting in the wings for the inevitable vacuum that will be left behind, should the US pack up and leave outright. The 'women's rights' thing seems a red herring, playing into the current admin's political weaknesses.

This is more about keeping the money flowing between the arms industry and our deep-state government than anything else. Am I to believe that our all-mighty military could not do anything in Afghanistan except play an endless and deadly game of whack-a-mole with the bad guys?
