Deporting criminals upheld

On February 21, the United States deported Friedrich Karl Berger, a 95-year-old German citizen, for his role in guarding a concentration camp. He'd lived in the United States legally for 75 years.

The Associated Press today reported on an unrelated case regarding illegal aliens. Its headline read, "Court raises bar for some immigrants to avoid deportation."

The story said, "The Supreme Court on Thursday made it harder for longtime immigrants who have been convicted of a crime to avoid deportation.

"Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote the opinion for a 5-3 conservative majority that ruled against a Mexican citizen who entered the U.S. illegally and has lived in the country for 25 years.

"The man, Clemente Avelino Pereida, had been charged in Nebraska with using a fraudulent Social Security card to get a job and convicted under a state law against criminal impersonation.

"Not all criminal convictions inevitability lead to deportation, but Gorsuch wrote for the court that Pereida failed to prove he was not convicted of a serious crime."

I am wondering why not all criminal convictions lead to deportation.

The story said, "Immigrants with criminal convictions who are facing deportation can ask the attorney general to allow them to remain in the country, if the conviction wasn’t for a serious crime and they have lived here at least 10 years, among other criteria.

"Based on Thursday’s ruling, Pereida can’t seek that relief."

That is good.

That is progress.

We have enough homegrown criminals to fit our needs. We do not need criminals from other nations sneaking in here to break our laws.

    1. Mike, The president can only pardon for federal crimes and this defendant was charged under state law.

Agree had the defendant been charged with a federal crime Joe Biden would definitely say "yes" to pardoning him if one of his handlers told him it was a good idea and then handed him a pen and a pardon to sign.

    1. Agree that is the "crux" issue.

That crime was almost certainly a felony since he was using a forgery in an attempt to defraud someone, and there seems to be somewhat of a bright-line rule that felonies are considered serious crimes.

100% agree that the progressives of the world do not see "serious crime" when a violent progressive riots, because reasons...
