Having ruined CNN, Zucker will move on

Jeff Zucker will end his 7-year erosion of CNN's credibility in December, as his contract with AT&T ends.

The New York Times, using a secondhand account, said he told his staff, "I cannot imagine not being here right now. I’m going to stay and finish my current contract, which, as I said, will keep me here until the end of this year. At that point, I do expect to move on."

He leaves one step ahead of the repo man. CNN's financial fortunes are about to fold.

The Los Angeles Times said, "Zucker currently has no plans beyond 2021. Opportunities are likely to become clearer when the pandemic subsides and business returns to normal."

Yes, that pandemic panic has really hit multi-millionaires in Manhattan hard. The S&P 500 stock index rose only 16% last year.

The New York Times got to the heart of the financial problem. CNN now gets about $1 a month per cable customer, which exceeds its advertising revenue.

The newspaper said, "his departure comes amid questions of how CNN’s parent company, AT&T, will steer the cable news channel at a time when Americans increasingly don’t want to pay for cable and streaming services are still unprofitable."

No one wants to stream CNN.

And AT&T has clamped down on The Zuck, according to NYT.

It said, "Known as a micromanager, Mr. Zucker had tensions with Jason Kilar, the recently installed chief executive of WarnerMedia, AT&T’s news and entertainment arm. Last year, Mr. Kilar stripped Mr. Zucker of several responsibilities, including his oversight of the human resources and public relations teams."

Micromanager is a corporate euphemism for pest.

That AT&T gave Zucker a boss who clamped down on him shows that CNN's ratings success are a mirage. CNN came aboard at just the right time when the cable industry boom began.

Making CNN a basic channel was good for marketing cable as high quality television. But like the History channel, Discovery, and The Learning Channel now TLC), CNN devolved into a ratings hysteria channel that ignored most of the news in favor of fomenting hate against the president.

The credibility gap at CNN began long before Zucker showed up. He just made it the Grand Canyon.

As much as conservatives criticize the mainstream media -- and the criticism is justified -- the truth is we could use a reliable source of information that is available to everyone any time. CNN failed to deliver on its promise. We shall see if AT&T hires a serious person to save CNN. My guess is it will hire a liberal BIPOC token instead.

    1. People have forgotten that Zuck was primarily responsible for the Tonight Show disaster (@ 2010-11, Leno vs C. O'Brian), although it can be argued that since WOKE was going to destroy late night comedy-talk shows anyway, which sure as s. did happen, the obese and repulsive Z (see Harvey Weinstein manual of arms) was merely ahead of the curve.

  5. When XiNN's ratings continue to crater will AT&T sell it for a pittance or just shut it down rather than continue to lose money on it?

    1. They don’t just make money off ratings. Your cable bill subsidizes them. Cut the cord.

    2. Re: AT&T simply shutting CNN down, rather than to go through the hubbub of selling it...

Although this would be an unlikely event, one company in the 00's (?) did buy an entire cable TV station (specialty: Wall St./finance), hired a ton of people and then abruptly, not long after the station had been bought, abruptly shut the entire thing down.

      Gone.

The buyer might have been CNN. Can't recall. Can anyone else?

One thing is absolutely certain: Kilar (AT&T) has a heart of stone and will terminate at will ANYTHING that isn't profitable.

And with AT&T's disastrous debt, that heart will be in perfect lockstep with everything that will reduce those Fiasco-IOUs.

We might be seeing jokes about how Kilar finished the job on the CNN Atlanta HQ that the BLM rioters started in 2020.

Someone once quipped, "OK, everyone's phone bill goes up 50 cents, problem solved." I doubt it can/would be that simple/easy.

  8. Until our side starts buying and running media outlets, web providers, grocers, and financial institutions this kind of crap will continue.

In the meantime boycott left-owned business AND CUT THE CABLE. Digital will give you all the channels you need over the air (OTA) via an antenna.

  9. AT&T, which is supposed to stand for AMERICAN Telephone and Telegraph, resurrected the name of AT&T when purchased by South Western Bell (SWB). The head schmuck of AT&T for many years, was Randall Stephens, who inherited the mantle from Ed Whitacre, who led SWB into the acquisition of various "Baby Bells and AT&T, and then adopted the AT&T name.

Randall (CEO 2007-2020), ran the operations of AT&T into the ground, through one disastrous acquisition after another, losing billions of dollars on a disastrous attempted buyout of Sprint, buyout of Direct TV, roll out of its UVERSE cable service, and finally the buyout of Time Warner and acquisition of CNN as a result.

No attempt was made to reform CNN under Randall, Direct TV and UVERSE flopped, and billions in debt were piled on resulting in an underperforming stock price. Randall outsourced most of AT&T's call centers and IT functions to H1B green card workers, and laid off hundreds of thousands of American AT&T employees. All the while, Randall continued to be awarded multi-million dollar bonuses year after year.

Just another example of "woke" corporations in the USA today, with their loss of respect for American workers, and the American values those workers represented.

Perhaps new management at AT&T, after the Randall's golden parachute has left the crashing plane, will turn the company around, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

  10. CNN’s nightly lineup is a freak show. Wolf Blitzed, Fredo Cuomo, Anderson Cooper and Don Lemon. Add in Brian Stelter and whoever else they put on and besides presenting fake news, it is presented by unwatchable people.
