Climate change is in the Twilight Zone

Snow in Saudi Arabia.

On November 17, 1961, The Twilight Zone premiered its "The Midnight Sun" episode.

Rod Serling opened the show by saying, "The word that Mrs. Bronson is unable to put into the hot, still, sodden air is 'doomed,' because the people you've just seen have been handed a death sentence.

"One month ago, the Earth suddenly changed its elliptical orbit and in doing so began to follow a path which gradually, moment by moment, day by day, took it closer to the sun. And all of man's little devices to stir up the air are now no longer luxuries—they happen to be pitiful and panicky keys to survival. The time is five minutes to twelve, midnight. There is no more darkness. The place is New York City and this is the eve of the end, because even at midnight it's high noon, the hottest day in history, and you're about to spend it in the Twilight Zone."

All, however, was not what it seemed. It was the Twilight Zone after all.

The Earth's orbit had changed, but instead of going nearer to the Sun, it was spinning away. Instead of being 120 °F, the temperature is -10 °F.

The heat was all a dream. A fevered dream. In reality, people were freezing to death.

Which brings me to my favorite physicist, Leona Woods. She graduated from high school at 14, and college at 18, which made her as smart as Sheldon Cooper. But she was hot like his twin sister. She was the only woman on Enrico Fermi's team in his part of the Manhattan Project.

She wanted The Bomb to save her brother's life because he was a Marine in the Pacific. She knew The Bomb would end the war. She also believed the radiation claims were exaggerated. She married and gave birth while working on the project.

Post-war she had another son, divorced, and re-married the man who developed radiocarbon dating. He won a Nobel in 1960 for his work. She worked in environmental studies and developed the method we use to determine rainfall and temperatures from ages past.

I wrote about her in one of my last newspaper columns, on July 23, 2014.

The column said, "In 1979 -- when the scientific consensus was global cooling -- Dr. Libby forecast a rise in temperatures until the year 2000 when it would get colder again for the next 50 years.

" 'Easily one to two degrees,' she told the Los Angeles Times. 'And maybe even three or four degrees. It takes only 10 degrees to bring on an Ice Age.'

"The first half of her prediction proved true. Temperatures peaked in 1998."

***

As temperatures have fallen, the pseudo-scientists have continued to tell the public the temperatures rise. But they have abandoned their claim of global warming, using climate change instead. This makes no sense but none of this is meant to make sense because these scientists are charlatans. They are using the weather to advance a political agenda.

I do not want to panic anyone, but a blizzard in Saudi Arabia is something worth noting. This week's winter storm across most of the United States is alarming, but not comparable to the 1978 Cleveland Blizzard.

And nothing compares to the tragedy of the Schoolchildren’s Blizzard of 1888, when temperatures dropped 50 degrees within two hours to 10 below. The name honors the children who froze to death on their way home from school.

The politicization of the weather undoubtedly would enrage Leona Woods, who saw things for what they are.

Her forecast of a drop in world temperatures is more alarming than predictions of a rise of 2 degree rise over the next century because we can easily adapt to a slow rise. A quick drop in temperatures, however, runs the risk being trapped like those schoolchildren were 133 years ago.

Fear not the midnight sun. Fear the sunless sky.

  1. I recommend "The Children's Blizzard" by David Laskin. Newly settled communities didn't know the weather patterns and were fooled by shirtsleeves weather one winter. They underdressed, then the temperatures dropped below freezing accompanied by a blizzard. Many died, especially young children who went to school without proper coats.

There have been several instances of snow in Jerusalem in my lifetime.

    1. Happens almost every year. In 2013 there was a record snowfall, but in general there will be a day or even a week of snow in Jerusalem. Having lived for years in the Golan Heights, I can tell you that heavy snowfall is an annual occurance.

  3. Being a Weather enthusiast, plus having been a NWS certified weather observer,we have no idea that our weather patterns are influenced by cycles.Hot, Cold, and in-between.This cold period was
forecast.Like east wind pattern last summer that was a cold pattern as well .
Governments have to be aware that not all is Global Warming. I feel we are in for quite shock.

  4. I remember forecasts in the 1970's of the future ice age. Most predicted it would happen after a slight warming of the Arctic Ocean. The reduction of sea ice during the winter months would allow for more snow to fall on the lands surrounding the ocean. Over several (not many) years enough snow would accumulate so that it wouldn't melt during the summer and it would reflect sunlight into space reducing the temperatures and thus starting the new ice age.

Most people don't realize that the last advance of ice started not at the North Pole, but in the Laurentian Mountains just across the St. Lawrence River in southern Quebec Provence.

    1. And it all happened in the space of six thousand years. The ever increasing age of imaginary earth is to shift the focus away from GOD and the testimony of true witnesses. Every bit of geological history has happened since the flood of Noah.

  5. If you really want to spend some time looking at a contrarian viewpoint on climate change, I recommend: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/23328940.2020.1796243
This article provides a good scientific discussion on our entry into a Grand Solar Minimum. Sadly, we are making the exact wrong decisions about our energy generation and distribution which is going to make the Texas Freeze debacle look like the good old days....

    2. Thanks for posting this link, Doug. I agree with your conclusion that we are making exactly the wrong energy decisions at this time.

This recent excellent article was written by Professor Valentina Zharkova of Northumbria University in the UK. IMO, she is the best living climatologist in the world.

In a nutshell, she is predicting a Grand Solar Minimum from 2020-2053. The last GSM was the Maunder Minimum (1645-1715), which brought plummeting temperatures, crop loss, famine, and the deaths of hundreds of millions of people over the WHOLE Earth.

Maybe our American climate forecasts (which studiously avoid Dr. Zharkov) are being made by the same kind of "experts" that are forecasting our covid and economic statistics.

  7. Despite the fact that they renamed it to Climate Change, the core concept is that more CO2 in the air causes the atmosphere to retain more heat. So, we are still dealing with Global Warming whether they call it that or not.

Too bad for them. The data simply does not support that.

We are hearing that the calamity is just around the corner. We must act now! The reason is obvious. They are about to be proved wrong. They have a very short window of opportunity to get their garbage passed before they are exposed!

    1. Climate change let's them blame any bad weather on your pickup truck. Hot, cold, wet, dry, hurricane. forest fire, human trafficking, war- CO2 can do it all.

The original hoax was probably someone who knew the carbon cycle was no longer taught in school and most people would figure if carbon monoxide is bad, carbon dioxide must be dangerous also. Too bad they didn't go with H2O,

  8. I have to laugh (hmmm) about the Twilight Zone episode. Because I do harbor a worry about huge rockets we send into space. Chemical energy creating momentum in a direction. Newton's laws. I know, each is small compared to the earth's mass, but geeze, they're all in the northern hemisphere. There's probably a Simpsons episode...

  10. Every piece of our solar system impacts earth's weather, and more than man ever will. The moon and sun give us our tides. The locations of Mars Jupiter Saturn etc shift our orbit around the sun. We don't follow the exact same path twice in a row.
People who spend their lives studying this know what is going to happen. The posers like Gore and Mann capitalize on ignorance to help the people who line their pockets.

  11. My (future) wife was attending Bowling Green in 1978, Big D. She tells stories about students jumping out of upper floor dorm windows into the ginormous snow drifts during that Bizzard. It was EPIC.

No argument it was a 'new' bomb Don, but the word there should be 'knew'. ;)

  14. I’ll take heat any day. I am sick of winter. Ice and snow this week resulted in no mail deliveries all week, only four trips out of the house for fire/911 calls. The roads are horrible and the propane trucks can’t make it refill anyone’s tanks. We are Keeping the house at record lows to preserve propane.

One call was for someone very ill who hadn’t been to dialysis for the week. By the time we got there, the person had passed. Another call was to bring someone from their home to the ambulance since the ambulance couldn’t go down the two mile road to their house. We had to drive five plus miles on a curvy, hilly country road for a car fire. That was not a fun ride and it took a long long time to get there.
These things wouldn’t happen with excessive heat. Bring the warming on.

Oh please. I lived through this and it was nothing. You want a blizzard, try Buffalo, NY 1977. THAT was a blizzard and I was there for that one too.
