Why quote celebrities?

The last time Sean Penn made news, he was interviewing the gangster El Chapo for a documentary. But Penn said something and Breitbart felt dutybound to devote a story to him, "Sean Penn Compares Trump Supporters to al-Qaeda, Says Trump Is Bin Laden."

Oh gosh. Someone in Hollywood insulted President Donald John Trump. That's only happened every hour on the hour for 4 years.

And it is Sean Penn. Unless you are a relative or someone seeking a job from him, no normal person really cares what Sean Penn thinks about them because the man does not seem to be a good judge of character.

He also is not much of a sailor. In 2005, he went to Louisiana to rescue people trapped in waters from Hurricane Katrina.

The Guardian reported, "Sean Penn was so frustrated by the search and rescue efforts in the inundated streets of New Orleans that he launched his own personal rescue mission, only for his boat to spring technical difficulties, ie a leak.

"According to Australia's Melbourne Herald Sun, he was forced to bail out with a red plastic cup when the vessel started filling with water. Then the motor didn't start, forcing him and his crew to paddle by hand."

At least he tried.

I have no problem with celebrities voicing their opinions. I voice mine 6 days a week on a blog. It is technically still a free country, at least until January 20.

What I don't like are these inane tattle-tale stories about celebrities calling President Trump and his supporters names. The stories are lazy. Rob Reiner tweeted something insulting? Who cares? Why give him the power to insult you? Ignore him. Enjoy his work because he is a very versatile filmmaker. Spinal Tap. The Princess Bride. A Few Good Men. But when he is not working, he gets bored and says mean things about the president.

Get over it.

The Celebrity Said Mean Things genre of stories is tiresome. And annoying. I don't know half these people. Breitbart reported, "Actor Bradley Whitford took to Twitter on Tuesday to proclaim that President Donald Trump is a 'terrorist.' "

Who?

They ran a picture of him. I thought wow, Dennis Hopper's hair sure turned white. Then I realized Hopper died 10 years ago. So it is not him.

The story said, "The Get Out actor... "

OK, that description did not help either because I don't know what a Get Out is, and I am too lazy to look it up. Old journalism habits die hard.

In another story, Breitbart said, "Stars including Debra Messing, Rob Reiner, Alec Baldwin, Kerry Washington, and The View‘s Sunny Hostin are whipping up impeachment fever on social media, hoping to build up pressure against the president and send an unambiguous message to conservatives around the country."

I don't want to pick on Breitbart. They do good work. But the impeachment was already cast. They were lobbying Congress to do what Congress planned to do all along.

When Penn calls us Al Qaeda, I realize they have run out of insults. I mean, they called us Nazis 5 years ago (in National Review, no less). There is nothing worse.

Hit the ignore button.

  2. Speaking of celebrities. Anyone remember the original Star Trek series episode where they discovered a planet that was a duplicate of 1930s Nazi Germany?

The "leader" was sedated, giving speeches behind a giant microphone that hid his mouth so you couldn't see his non-moving lips. The puppet master in the backroom was giving the actual speech using recordings or something to convey the message HE wanted.

    "Patterns of Force" perhaps?

Tell me this won't be Bidet*.

    1. Whoever put that episode together either accidentally or on purpose actually provided a better picture of the early nazi years than did the history books.

As people have been starting to note, the nazis got into power and consolidated power by using an enfeebled old man (Paul Hindenburg) as a figurehead (although Hindenburg was indeed a national hero for having come out of retirement in 1914 to restore the situation on the eastern front when the Russian attack was larger and sooner than expected... sniffy can't hold a candle to that).

Since sniffy will be off at a table in the corner playing with lego blocks, who will really be pulling the strings behind the curtain?

    1. Interesting thoughts. You have to wonder if these jokers have thought this through; after decades of dumping on both the military and law enforcement, do they really expect that when push comes to shove, the military and law enforcement will be there for them? (I suspect that they do think so - since they know nothing of either; they've been telling each other that people going law enforcement and the military solely because they are psychopaths itching for the joys of killing people for the heck of it... and expect them to act that way).

Rome vs. Carthage comes to mind. Roman armies were comprised of citizen-soldiers, while Carthaginian armies were staffed by whatever mercenaries the Carthaginian ruling class could hire.

There's also a Ceausescu angle in here that you landed upon. The crisis in 1989 turned into a revolution when Ceausescu ordered the army to fire on demonstrators in Bucharest - and the army refused. So he brought in his version of the SS/NKVD (the Securitate), and ordered THEM to fire on the demonstrators (from top-floor apartment windows). The army fought back against the Securitate to protect the people - and the Ceausescus were finished.

      News from the future?

(And BTW, if you've never read the third of the four stanzas of The Star-Spangled Banner, now would be a good time to do so.)

    2. I lack your faith in the military. Remember Spencer Rapone? Posted a selfie holding at sign saying "Communism Will Win" at his graduation from West Point. He was eventually relieved from duty but how many of his comrades are in the service being too smart to advertise their true beliefs? Think of Col. "Puffy" Vindman. McMaster. Mattis. Adm. Sestak retired from Navy and ran for Congress as a hard Leftist. Don't make the mistake of thinking of the military, especially the officer corps, as being populist patriots. The Swamp runs deep in the Pentagon.

      The Defense of Fort M'Henry

O! say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there —
O! say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines on the stream —
'Tis the star-spangled banner, O! long may it wave
O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havock of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash'd out their foul foot-steps' pollution,
No refuge could save the hireling and slave,
      From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave;
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave.

O! thus be it ever when freemen shall stand
Between their lov'd home, and the war's desolation,
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land
Praise the power that hath made and preserv'd us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto — "In God is our trust!"
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave.

  5. Ann Althouse has a post up with some poignant observations offered by her son

"The most impeached president in American history! I wonder if Trump is tired of all this winning…

"Half of all impeachments of an American president have been of Trump!...

"We’re going to have impeachment, like you wouldn’t believe. A lot of people are saying he’s the best president ever at getting impeached. No one had ever heard of impeachment before Trump."

Now that's they way to respond, with humor. And really, how bad is impeachment by the Establishment opposition to a guy elected to do battle with the Establishment? Certainly signals that Trump didn't sell out like all the rest who win election.

    4. The Dems are now 2 for 2 in impeaching Trump for things he is FALSELY ALLEGED to have said, despite a written transcript and video that PROVES he did not.
Both Impeachments were intended to be distractions and to give cover for Democrat crimes.
Impeachment 1.0 was intended to turn the attention away from the criminal Biden family in Ukraine, even though a written transcript of Trump's phone call proved there was no High Crime or Misdemeanor.
Impeachment 2.0 was for inciting an armed riot, even though Trump cautioned his supporters to peacefully let their voices be heard and said nothing more inciting than he said at hundreds of rally events.
But the storming of the Capitol by BLM/Antifa/Democrat anarchists and blamed on Trump put an end to the elector challenge

  16. When you consider that celebrities are more often than not highly dysfunctional people, why would anyone in their right mind take advice from them?

They may seem smart when they are in a movie or tv show, but somebody else wrote the words coming out of their mouths.

They used to have celebrity week on Jeopardy. It was embarrassing and the network quit doing it because none of their agents would let them appear on the show anymore.

A while back they tried a news celebrities week. Wolf Blitzer was -14,000 at the end of Double Jeopardy.

  22. Don, Breitbart doesn’t do good work.

They were totally AWOL on Democratic voting fraud all year. It’s as if Breitbart don’t believe it happened, or it’s not relevant.

They have lost readers to The Gateway Pundit because the Gateway Pundit reporting on the voting fraud allegations.

If the editors of Breitbart did not believe the reports of voting fraud, or thought the allegations were not relevant, they should have reported news stories reporting facts.

Instead, Breitbart went into full on “Protect the GOPe” mode and demanded conservatives vote in the Georgia Senate runoffs - AS IF anyone paying attention didn’t know how that would play out.

Breitbart is DONE — someone as already stuck a FORK in them.
