Consuela, the Hispanic housekeeper, was a staple of Family Guy in its early years. But the show abandoned her a few years ago.
I wondered why until I read a New York Times report today, "Housekeepers Face a Disaster Generations in the Making."
Rich people are abandoning their real-life housekeepers in the wake of covid 19.
Many of the rich people are liberals. Many of the housekeepers are illegal aliens.
The story said, "The pandemic has had devastating consequences for a wide variety of occupations, but housekeepers have been among the hardest hit. 72% of them reported that they had lost all of their clients by the first week of April, according to a survey by the National Domestic Workers Alliance. The fortunate had employers who continued to pay them. The unlucky called or texted their employers and heard nothing back. They weren’t laid off so much as ghosted, en masse."Ghosted.
Dumped like so much human trash.
What a far cry from the pre-pandemic panic Virtue Signaling by liberals.
Let us stroll down memory lane to March 20, 2017, when the Los Angeles Times reported, "Malibu becomes a sanctuary city — in solidarity with its gardeners, cooks and others in the U.S. illegally."
Ah, solidarity. The multi-millionaires who hire illegal aliens and pay them under the table and below what the law requires are stood side-by side the people they exploited.
The story said, "While some residents praised the proposal, others blamed those who are in the country illegally for crime and called the move a thinly disguised rebuke of President Trump.
"But it being Malibu, there was a celebrity twist. The idea was inspired by one of the town’s many famous residents: actor Martin Sheen. In December, he grabbed the lectern during a City Council meeting and — as if conjuring his inner President Josiah Bartlet from The West Wing — urged the city to become a sanctuary city.
"Like many sanctuary city resolutions, Malibu’s is largely symbolic. Backers said the move, which passed on a 3-2 council vote, is a chance for Malibu’s privileged to stand up for the city’s vulnerable population."
Fact-check: No, it was a chance for Malibu’s privileged to exploit the city’s vulnerable population. Rich people in Arabia exploit Filipino housekeepers, occasionally raping them. But the Saudis and the rest sometimes are hauled into court because the women are in their countries legally and have at least some rights.
Not so the Illegals of Malibu.
They are here illegally and cannot get government assistance without risking deportation, which means they likely will have to leave their American children behind.
This is the very white privilege that white-privileged elitists publicly denounce.
The 2017 story said, "Malibu is about 92% white and one of L.A. County’s wealthiest cities. Everyone agrees the city has workers who are not authorized to be in the United States, and they tend to serve the food at upscale eateries, clean the beach-side mansions, look after children, and keep the landscaping looking lush."
There is nothing wrong with cleaning houses or landscaping. There is plenty wrong with exploiting your housekeepers and landscapers, which is what the rich do by hiring illegal aliens.
Today's story showed liberal compassion for what it is. Non-existent.
The Times said, "In a dozen interviews, housekeepers in a handful of cities across the country described their feelings of fear and desperation over the last six months. A few said the pain had been alleviated by acts of generosity, mostly advances for future work. Far more said they were suspended, or perhaps fired, without so much as a conversation.
"One of them is Vicenta, a 42-year-old native of Mexico who lives in Los Angeles, and who, like many contacted for this article, did not want her last name used because she is undocumented.
"For 10 years, she had earned $2,000 a month cleaning two opulent homes in gated communities in Malibu, Calif. This included several exhausting weeks in 2018, when fires raged close enough to cover both homes in ash. Three times a week, she would visit both houses and scrub ash off floors, windows, walls and, for one family, a fluffy little dog named Bobby."
And the story said, "If Vicenta thought her years of service had banked some good will, she was wrong. Early in May, both families called and left a message with her 16-year-old son, explaining that for the time being, she could not visit and clean. There was some vague talk about eventually asking her to return, but messages she left with the families for clarification went unreturned."
Family Guy abandoning Consuela was no big deal. Maybe the stereotype embarrassed creator Seth McFarland as his liberalism rose along with his wealth. She was a cartoon character.
Vicenta is a real person. Try telling that to Martin Sheen and the liberals in Malibu who virtue-signaled about sanctuary cities, had her clean the ashes from their mansions, and unceremoniously dumped her when she needed them most.
Uh oh...I feel some Ojays comin on, Big D...

DeleteWe furloughed our housekeeper in mid March, but we paid her anyway. Housekeepers have expenses too. After about a month we had all that we wanted so we brought her back. The house was a mess. We are elderly and can't do the work ourselves, so our Covid risk is high. But a messy house is a big motivator for us.
ReplyDeleteWe have continued our bimonthly visits from a wonderfully woman from Mexico and we keep more than 6 feet apart as she goes from room to room. Since we don't have the co-morbidities, we are not worried that we couldn't withstand the virus if it did hit us. Out of respect for others, we keep our masks on when we leave the house.
DeleteShame on the people who exploit housekeepers by paying cash to avoid Social Security and Medicare taxes. I lived in Malibu. When I discovered the housekeeper I hired was undocumented, I got her a lawyer and got her legal. I paid both the employee and employer taxes for 20 years. She is secure and safe in her well-earned retirement. I know some wildly rich residents who not only pay cash under the table, they nickel-and-dime the gardeners and housekeepers to reduce the hourly rates. If you value your household and garden staff, you will do all you can to legalize them and pay them properly. But if you only care about being cheap, go ahead and virtue-signal by supporting your sanctuary city.
ReplyDeleteShe needed to go home
DeleteThe Griffins exploited her in other ways.
ReplyDeleteConsuelo is a woman's mane. Consuela is a hooker.
Very well written. This one’s gonna leave marks!
ReplyDeleteWhat did they think would happen.
ReplyDeleteThe progressive socialists would adopt them?
Come on.
Trump should let the Illegals sue for back taxes, payroll & wage violations, then let then refund the taxes paid when they are deported back to their home countries, after taking a 10% processing fee for building the wall.
ReplyDeleteConservative Trial lawyers could sue for civil damages - that w/a twofer - $$ taken away from liberal trial lawyers and movie stars!!!
Be sweet to see lawfare used against them, for a change.
DeleteIn determining who is underpaid, you got to remember that the illegals get paid gross under the table rather than have taxes withheld. As a result, it's really the treasury that gets screwed.
ReplyDelete$2000/month is about $12/hr. You'd have to make $15/hr to net $12 after taxes. So Vicenta is actually making the $15/hr living wage the libs are demanding.
ReplyDeleteAnd no doubt getting "benefits" which we are paying for and which pad her income nicely.
Deleteliberals claim to be the compassionate ones. They only care about themselves.

Problem is Consuela is probably still here fraudulently collecting welfare benefits, voting, and if ever employed again, sending back "remittances".
ReplyDeleteCry me a river. Not.
I pay my housekeeper $20 a day and free food. I also let her play the spanish stations on the radio and tv when I'm not home. It's only a 5hr work day so It benefits us both.
ReplyDeleteI grew up four doors down from Martin, playing with his sons in their house. He wanted to make Malibu a sanctuary for the homeless, and then installed a fence around his house with electric gates...
ReplyDeleteThe hypocrisy is legion in Malibu.
Then again, illegals are in the states illegally, so they have NOTHING to complain about.
I'm so glad that we left there.
Wow.
DeleteI never gave it much thought before but it really IS true what they say about the Latino illegal alien replacing the black US citizen on the job.
My mom used to work as a housekeeper for the Fondas when Peter and Jane were little kids, when the people who cooked and cleaned inside rich people's houses were from Watts that we now call South Central L.A. instead of another country!
And yes, just like me and my dad, Mom was black.
Just one more story of someone living and working in L.A. eventually getting replaced by illegal aliens....
