How Harry Reid stopped Obama from succeeding Ginsburg

President Donald John Trump thanked Harry Reid for making it possible for him to install a replacement for Ruth Ginsburg with just 50 votes.

In 2013, Reid as Senate majority leader disabled the filibustering of judicial nominations. Thus, instead of needing 60 votes to end a filibuster, Reid simply called for a vote on the nomination and got Obama's picks confirmed.

Reid said in 2013, "It’s time to change the Senate before this institution becomes obsolete."

That now allows his successor, Mitch McConnell, to get a vote this year on whomever our beloved president nominates. Even if he somehow wins, Biden will not make this nomination.

In 2013, Democrat Senators Carl Levin of Michigan, Joe Manchin of West Virginia, and Mark Pryor of Arkansas warned Reid of what would happen. They voted against the change. Democrats made the change anyway.

But while Reid did the deed, Obama had a hand in this change as well.

Politico reported at the time, "The debate over the filibuster — and specifically its use on D.C. Circuit nominees — has been raging for nearly a decade, stretching back to when George W. Bush was president and Democrats were in the minority. But changing the Senate rules has always been avoided through a piecemeal deal, a gentleman’s agreement or a specific solution, not a historic change to the very fabric of the Senate.

"But since Obama’s re-election, the Nuclear Option has reared its head three times in less than a year — each time getting closer to the edge. Many in the Senate privately expected that this go-round would be yet another example of saber rattling, but Reid said pressure was increasing within his own party to change the rules."

Democrats broke the agreement. They now reap what they sowed. It could not happen to a more deserving bunch.

The short term gain was all Democrats cared about.

Politico reported, "Senate Democrats were quick to use their newfound powers, voting in the early afternoon to end the filibuster on Patricia Millett’s nomination to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. The vote was 55-43, with two senators voting present. Before the change earlier Thursday, Millett would have needed 60 votes to clear the procedural hurdle and move on to a confirmation vote. But now, she needed just 51 to advance."

The politics now goes beyond the 3 Little RINO Girls -- Murkowski, Collins, and Romney -- who will not vote for President Trump's nominee. I get that RINOs oppose conservative judges and conservatism in general.

But what about Manchin and Doug Jones? Do they really want another Ginsburg appointed to a lifetime term? Maybe their moderate positions in the past were cynical ways of fooling the good people of West Virginia and Alabama, respectively.

Do they really want Justice Obama? Yes, the Nuclear Option killed any chance of Obama replacing Ginsburg. Ha ha ha.

The real culprit in all this was Ginsburg. She should have retired after the 2014 election when Democrats lost the Senate. Loretta Lynch could have tied the seat down for Democrats for another 30 years.

Maybe Ginsburg held out thinking Hillary would appoint Obama.

Ha ha ha.

Marxists took the news well. Fox reported, "SCOTUS battle prompts threats, calls for arson: 'Burn Congress down.'"

Former CNN host Reza Aslan tweeted, "If they even TRY to replace RBG we burn the entire f-----g thing down," and that President Trump's nominee will be confirmed "Over our dead bodies, literally."

Writer Beau Willimon tweeted: "We’re shutting this country down if Trump and McConnell try to ram through an appointment before the election."

Too late. Covid 19 already did that.

As for whom President Trump will nominate, Just the News had a good rundown of the potential nominees from the president's public list of dozens of candidates for the job.

Amy Coney Barrett of the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals heads the list. She had backing by many conservatives last time, and having a woman replace a woman. She's 48, which gives her a good chance to serve 30 years.

Allison Eid, 55, of the 10th circuit, and Barbara Lagoa, 52, of the 11th circuit, were also listed by Just the News, as were some men judges including Amul Thapar, 51, of the 6th circuit who is a favorite of  McConnell.

Democrats who demanded a vote on Merrick Garland now oppose holding a vote on President Trump's nominee. Such hypocrites.

McConnell promised a vote. Thanks to Harry Reid he can hold a vote.

And also thanks to Harry Reid, electing Donald Trump president not only stopped Hillary but a Justice Obama as well.

UPDATE: We will see what he does when he does it, but this is encouraging.

    4. The Bible, GOD'S HOLY WORD, states that His mercy ends at death. Accept Jesus Christ, HIS Son, as one's own, personal Savior, as God's sacrifice, as the propitation and atonement for one's sins, and God will have mercy even on Hitler, Stalin, Castro, and ... any Democrat. God's free offer ends at death, and after that, the judgement. All the pretty euphemisms aside, that's literally, "the Gospel". By her own, personal testimony, and that witnessed by her close relatives, she rejected God and His mercy, until her death. Therefore, your pleas for mercy, while perhaps well meaning, are irrelevant, simply 21st century virtue signalling. That won't sway a just and holy God, either.

  2. Wouldn't it be prudent for McConnell to punish the three RINO girls and remove them from every subcommittee and table every piece of legislation that they ever being up? It is time to play hard ball with these chumps. The Democrats never seem to have this dissension on their side. Their members choose voter rejection or party defiance.

    2. But then they will have no reason not to switch their party affiliation. Along with Pierre Dilecto (Romney) that would really cause trouble in the Senate.

If the GOP does not approve the Pres. choice, they will be shut out in 2020. Yes that will mean the Democrats are in but the GOP has allowed the Dems to rule too often too long and we might as well get the war going rather than face the continued slide in Hell that the GOP has us on.

      B. He makes a sarcastic, yet articulate point: give the People a taste of what they actively or tacitly condone.

Carter and Congress gave us 8 years of Reagan and 4 of (meh) Bush.

It's the bitter pill solution and, near as I can tell, is targeted at what we now refer to as the Never-Trumper, "establishment" Republicans.

For the record, I would never support that position.

Don has a great bog. Don't turn it into The Hill.

The Deep State is too wide and deep! They have no doubt gotten to the SS as well as everywhere else they are already!

  5. Collins is now citing something called "fairness to the American people" which evidently means waiting for another election to take place.

[pause to consider the depth of her mind...]

How about "fairness to the American people" meaning having the Senate the American people created in 2018 get to work immediately to confirm a new justice?

  7. Stilton had a cartoon a long time back where PDJT is speaking to Barry and offering him a scotus seat. Quite funny.
If this was May, I'd love to see him do it. Not confirm him, just run him through the mill like they did to Kavenaugh and Goresuch.

  10. All this hysteria is an admission that Democrats cannot get their unpopular agenda passed by normal democratic means. Otherwise, this would not assume the status of a silver stake in broad daylight to a Party of vampires.

"If you do this, everything is on the table," they snarl.

The threats aren't really threats at all. They plan to eliminate the filibuster, pack the Court, dissolve the Electoral College, create new Democrat states and senators and control every election in America from the Swamp EVEN IF PRESIDENT TRUMP NOMINATED HILLARY CLINTON TO THE COURT.

So they're not really threats at all. They're simply telling us what they will do if they are ever given power again. They will never relinquish it again.

They are already bailing out arsonists, rioters and murderers to attack citizens. Defunding and kneecapping police departments. They're using COVID to seize dictatorial powers and hurt the economy. They're teaming with Big Tech to end Free Speech--except for themselves. Hell, they're burning down their own cities. Who does that? They impeached Donald Trump because Joe Biden took bribes. They have already committed nuclear treason with Iran. And used a CIA/FBI/DOJ Police State to wiretap, frame and then attempt the overthrow of President Trump. And each vile new accusation only tells us what they themselves are doing.

    "Everything is on the table"?

Yeah--we've noticed. It has been for some time. Lunatics.

BTW, If the nominee is Judge Amy Coney Barrett, a former Scalia clerk, the hearings will showcase the Democrats' disgusting anti-Catholic bigotry, which they displayed at previous hearings.

Good. Americans need to see the Party of the Klan--and Klantifa--in all their revolting night-riding glory.

  11. With all the lawsuits expected as a result of the General Election we need a ninth SCOTUS. Eight justices can theoretically leave tie and V.P. Pence would be the tie breaker; however, the Democrats would demand Pence recuse himself, potentially leaving the tie breaker to the Speaker of the House, which is Pelosi who absolutely detests Trump.

That is why I, IMHO, believe we need a ninth SCOTUS in place as soon as possible. Someone who will rule based on the Constitution and what it's framers intended.

    1. I do not think the VP breaks ties for SCOTUS - only for the Senate, of which he is the "President Pro Tempore". The Senate is designed to have an even number of members, therefore a tie is always a possibility. Therefore, the system was designed with a tiebreaker built in. Not so with SCOTUS.
