Highlights of the News

Donald Trump is still our president.

ITEM 1: Sean Hannity reported, "Ratings for the NBA’s post-season playoffs are down compared to 2019, with 23% of viewers tuning-out as athletes continue to protest the National Anthem and delayed games to promote social justice in America.

"'Ratings for broadcasts of NBA games remained shaky over the weekend, per Sports Media Watch, continuing a season-long trend of the league struggling to attract television viewers,' reports Sports Illustrated."

There is a reason why the Harlem Globetrotter uniforms are red, white, and blue.

ITEM 2: BizPac Review reported, "Dallas hair salon owner Shelley Luther is running for state senate in Texas to represent local business owners and individuals who want to make their own informed decisions during the pandemic.

"Luther, a Republican, appears to be pro-choice as far as freedom of movement and face masks are concerned.

"Moreover, Luther described Gov. Greg Abbott’s statewide mask mandate as 'ridiculous' and believes that any further measures related to covid should be subject to the approval by the state legislature 'otherwise, we’ll turn into a communist state.'"

We released criminals from prison and jailed a woman for cutting hair -- all in the name of flattening the curve.

I hope she runs for governor and wins.

ITEM 3: CNN reported, "A federal appeals court ruled Monday against Michael Flynn and the Justice Department in their request to quickly shut down his criminal case. The 8-2 decision restores power to a judge to question the Justice Department's moves in the politically divisive case, when Attorney General William Barr dropped charges against President Donald Trump's former national security adviser earlier this year despite twice pleading guilty to lying under oath to lying to the FBI.

"Flynn had fought District Judge Emmet Sullivan's decision to ask a third-party lawyer to argue against the Justice Department's dismissal in the case, and his plans to hold a hearing, which has not yet happened."

This is nonsense. Sullivan should have simply dismissed the case as requested. A summer of rioting has rendered this controversy irrelevant and even toxic for Democrats. If Sullivan is smart, he will let the case die.

ITEM 4: The Star Tribune reported, "Skyrocketing demolition costs for riot-damaged Minneapolis, St. Paul properties delay rebuilding."

Riots?

Bu-bu-but the Star Tribune insisted they were peaceful protests.

Must have been that Umbrella Man, who was never named or charged.

ITEM 5KATU reported, "The sheriffs of Clackamas and Washington County say they will not send staff to help with protests in Portland after Oregon Governor Kate Brown unveiled a plan to address the violence at protests.

"The plan called on several local law enforcement agencies to help, including the sheriff's offices of Washington and Clackamas counties.

"Clackamas County Sheriff Craig Roberts said the governor didn’t approach his office before rolling out the plan, intended to address the violence and arson while also protecting free speech."

Good call.

Why send deputies in to be killed or prosecuted if they dare to defend themselves?

Besides, don't they have mask mandates from Her Majesty to enforce?

ITEM 6: The Associated Press reported, "A Star of David-adorned El Al plane flew from Israel to the United Arab Emirates on Monday, carrying a high-ranking American and Israeli delegation to Abu Dhabi in the first-ever direct commercial passenger flight between the two countries.

"The Israeli flag carrier's flight marked the implementation of the historic U.S.-brokered deal to normalize relations between the two nations and solidifies the long-clandestine ties between them that have evolved over years of shared enmity toward Iran.

"With the U.S. as matchmaker, Israel and the UAE agreed earlier this month to work toward normalization, which would make the UAE the third Arab nation to have full relations with Israel, after Egypt and Jordan. Unlike those two nations, Israel has never fought a war against the UAE and hopes to have much-warmer relations."

War hurts business.

Kudos to the son-in-law and the people of UAE and Israel.

ITEM 7: Al-Jazeera reported, "Hamas, the Palestinian group running the besieged Gaza Strip, has announced it has reached a Qatari-mediated deal to end the latest escalation of violence with Israel.

"After talks with Qatari envoy Mohammed el-Emadi, 'an understanding was reached to rein in the latest escalation and end [Israeli] aggression against our people,' the office of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar said on Monday.

"There was no immediate comment by Israel."

Moving the embassy to Jerusalem ticked the Arabs off so much that they have decided to make deals with Israel just to show that Drumpf!

ITEM 8:  The Trafalgar Group (which got every battleground state right in 2016) has President Trump up by 10 points in Missouri.

Missouri has gotten 26 of the last 29 presidential elections right.

But confidence is no substitute for hard work. We have more than 2 months to go. Who knows what deviltry Democrats are devising today.

ITEM 9: The New York Post reported, "Two corona virus drugs used in cats might help humans infected with the novel corona virus, according to a preliminary study recently published in the journal Nature.

"The drugs, dipeptide-based protein inhibitors, referred to as GC376 and GC373, are designed to treat cats with feline infectious peritonitis, a potentially fatal illness caused by another type of coronavirus, feline enteric corona virus (FCoV), according to a press release about the study. The release explained that FCoV is a corona virus that has traits similar to the SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing covid 19."

But hacking up furballs is a possible side effect, so Dr. Fauci will want us to wait until we get a perfect vaccine.

ITEM 10: Forbes reported, "Stocks Just Had The Best August Since 1984, But History Shows Trouble Is On The Way."

The only trouble history shows is for Democrats. Three months after that august August in 1984, President Reagan racked up a 49-state landslide pummeling the vice president of the previous president.

Stocks have gained 60% since we wisely elected Donald Trump president.

Deplorable, ain't it?

ITEM 11: The Oregonian reported, "Michael Forest Reinoehl, the 48-year-old man under investigation in the fatal shooting Saturday night of a right-wing demonstrator in downtown Portland, attended a Black Lives Matter protest the night before outside the mayor’s home.

"Reinoehl brought his daughter, who was carrying a baseball bat, according to photos by an Oregonian/OregonLive photographer and others present Friday night at Mayor Ted Wheeler’s condominium building."

Friday was take your daughter to loot night for Democrats in Portland.

ITEM 12: ABC reported, "Current and former national security officials are raising concerns over Attorney General William Barr's recent decision to remove the head of a Justice Department office that helps ensure federal counterterrorism and counterintelligence activities are legal – and replace him with a political appointee with relatively limited experience.

"'It's very alarming,' said Katrina Mulligan, who worked for the Obama administration in several national security roles and then, after President Donald Trump's inauguration, joined the Office of Law and Policy in the Justice Department's National Security Division.

"For much of the past decade, that little-known office has been led by Deputy Assistant Attorney General Brad Wiegmann, a 23-year career public servant, not a political appointee. But two weeks ago, Wiegmann, 54, was told he is being reassigned and replaced with a political appointee, according to a Justice Department spokesman and sources familiar with the matter."

If the job is that important, it should warrant appointment by a president with confirmation by the Senate.

Another reform by President Trump.

ITEM 13: The Daily Beast reported, "For months now, Fox News host Tucker Carlson has been demanding that the Trump administration 'frog-march' the leaders of the social justice movement Black Lives Matter in front of television cameras in a series of 'mass arrests' and charge them as domestic terrorists.

"On Monday night, Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf informed the far-right Fox News star that he may soon get his wish.

"In light of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s speech denouncing rioting and looting among the nationwide protests against police brutality, Carlson grumbled about the former vice president warning that Trump is inciting violence and that it could get worse if Trump is re-elected."

Hey, remember when the lefties dreamed about frog-marching Karl Rove.

Good times.

By the way, the damage from Antifa/BLM now exceeds 9/11. That's not a protest. That's terrorism.

ITEM 14: WPVI reported, "11-year-old girl shot in Wilmington as city battles 57% rise in gun violence."

If only Delaware had sent someone to Washington to build seniority and be in a position to help his state instead of setting up bribes for his coke-addled son to pocket.

ITEM 15WGN reported, "Chicago police say multiple shooters opened fire at a man dining outside a Morgan Park pancake house Sunday afternoon, killing him and wounding four others. A 31-year-old man was dining under a tent outside the Lumes Pancake House near 116th Street and Western Avenue around 1:45 p.m. Sunday when police say a white SUV pulled up and multiple offenders exited before firing shots, killing him and wounding four other adult diners."

The story did not say if this was a gangland or Antifa/BLM killing.

At any rate, it is just another day in the park in Chicago.

ITEM 16: The Sydney Morning Herald in Australia reported, "In pivotal battleground Kenosha, residents consider changing sides."

The key quote is from "Robert Nelson standing outside what used to be the Danish Brotherhood Lodge in Kenosha, Wisconsin."

Nelson said, "The Democrats are losing ground. A lot of Democrats aren't really denouncing this or trying to prevent violence from flaring up."

Every time a window breaks, President Trump gets another vote.

ITEM 17: Just the News reported, "Top Republican donors are launching a new super PAC to ramp up the advertising effort on behalf of President Trump.

"The effort is being led by Chris LaCivita, the mind behind Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, the effort to undermine 2004 Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry's stories about his time in the Vietnam War.

"The new organization, Preserve America, will spend an initial $30 million on an immediate advertising blitz to counter an onslaught of ads from the Biden camp. Politico reports that PAC organizers expect the support of a wide array of GOP megadonors, including Sheldon Adelson and Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus.

"Trump is now getting massively outspent by the Biden campaign on TV ads. Advertising Analytics, a media tracking firm, reported that Trump was outspent 8-to-1 this month in Wisconsin and 3-to-1 in Florida, both battleground states.

"Preserve America will air its first commercials Tuesday in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin."

Bwahaha.

FINALLY, today is the 50th anniversary of my 17th birthday. People may wonder what I might tell a 17-year-old Don Surber. My answer is nothing. He knew EVERYTHING, right?

If I had it to do over again, sigh, I could really screw things up. I am where I am, blessed by God with a great wife and three wonderful children, although the youngest is deceased. He is still with us where it counts. In the heart.

My father may have abandoned his five kids, but our mother did not. She raised us and fed us, and she took me to ballgames. We grew up poor and did not know it. I had a great childhood.

  7. Happy Birthday young man!

Those of us born in the early 1950s grew up in "interesting times" - we became teenagers about the time the Beatles invaded American and America invaded Vietnam, so to speak, sigh...both seminal events IMHO...I enjoyed one and managed to avoid the other though many other brave lads from our generation tragically did not & I think about those who did their duty and gave their lives every time I drive by Arlington National Cemetery to visit my own offspring. So sad your son couldn't be with you for this occasion...hope you have a grand day in spite of it all. Keep on truckin' and puttin' out a great column every day (almost, 6 outa 7 ain't bad where I come from)

  11. 5) The sheriffs further justified their thanks-but-no-thanks to the guv by pointing out it's the judicial process, not the force response, that is the problem. Same people getting arrested night after night...DA refuses to charge...as President Trump says, call us when you're serious.

PS: Happy Birthday! Nothing wrong with turning 67 when you consider your options. Can't wait to join you myself.

  27. Happy Birthday, Mr. Surber. Your columns are a blessing to me.

It is obvious to me that you are a good Christian man. I love your comment about your deceased son being in your heart. I feel the same thing about my late father. He lives on in his children as we reflect the values that he (and my mom) instilled in us. Mom is still going strong at 90.
