9-in-10 wildfires are set by humans

Dear Facebook,

Before you flag this as fake news, my source is the National Weather Service.

NWS reported that 87% of the wildfires were caused by humans this year -- 7,072 in California alone. Not all were arson, of course, because humans are pretty careless. But enough are arson to cause concern in light of Democrats setting cities aflame this summer. The last thing we want is the Antifa arm of the Democrat Party expanding into rural areas.

ABC reported from Salem, Oregon, "An Oregon man was charged with arson in connection to a raging wildfire that destroyed hundreds of homes, one of the blazes gripping the West Coast with death and devastation.

"Michael Jarrod Bakkela, 41, was jailed on two charges of arson, 15 counts of criminal mischief and 14 counts of reckless endangering for a fire that was set Tuesday in the Phoenix area in southern Oregon.

"The fire merged with the raging Almeda Fire, and there is significant damage that police are attributing to the fire allegedly set by Bakkela, Jackson County Sheriff's Office public information officer Mike Moran told ABC News."

The story also said, "Bakkela initially was arrested on Tuesday for a probation violation on an original charge of unlawful possession of methamphetamine. Authorities charged him Friday in connection with the fire, which he denied starting."

The Daily Mail reported, "Stark data showed that 36,383 of the 41,599 fires that have ripped through the nation in the first nine months of the year were started by humans, burning a total of 2,510,743 acres.

"California has been hardest-hit by human-caused fires, with a total of 7,072 as of September 10.

"Texas was second with 4,170, followed by North Carolina with 1,889, Florida with 1,779 and Arizona with 1,552.

"Despite the prevalence of human-caused fires, authorities in Oregon have waded in on rumors that wildfires in the state have been deliberately started by extremist political groups."

While human-caused fires are not necessarily arson, enough are to warrant alarm.

The Oregonian reported, "A man was arrested on Sunday for intentionally setting a brush fire near Interstate 205 in Portland then, just hours after he was released, he was taken into custody again for lighting six more fires, according to Portland police.

"Around 4:35 p.m., officers were sent to help Portland Fire & Rescue with a small blaze burning in a section of grass along the freeway near the 9600 block of East Burnside, officials said. The fire was quickly put out and no one was injured.

"About an hour later, a witness flagged down officers and told them that a man in a nearby tent had lit the fire. Domingo Lopez Jr., 45, was taken into custody and admitted to setting the fire, police said in a statement. He was found with a plastic bottle with a burnt wick attached, according to police.

"He was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on charges of reckless burning and disorderly conduct, but was released.

"Around 3:30 a.m. Monday, officers were called to another report of fire in the same general area of Interstate 205. They found several small blazes and firefighters quickly put out several of them while bystanders from the community taking care of the rest."

They arrested Lopez again.

  1. Arson has become the California and Oregon's Democrat ATM machine for for federal bailouts(disaster relief). This isn't their first rodeo.

    1. I forgot the AIDS cash cow, the Mueller/Russia cash cow , the racist cash cow and many others as well for years now ? So are Americans slow thinkers or what ?

  2. Something we forget: Osama bin Ladin said (threatened) America would be burning. Islam does not cease its jihad just because it is not currently mounting big, spectacular attacks for which it takes credit. In addition to BLM/Antifa arsonists this year, there may have been jihadist arsonists at work for years.

  4. ...because the clintons "pulled the trigger" in July 1994, when the NYT gave them a warning about forensic science finding tangible evidence of centuries long droughts in California, multiple times....

  7. Why is the UK Daily Mail cited for US weather/wildfire data, instead of CNN, or NPR?

    Oh, right ...

  8. These are just concerned citizens doing the "controlled" burns that the Sierra Club got the state to stop years ago because of certain wildlife endangerment. Not sure where those endangered and not endangered species are going to live now.

    1. Y'know, there is probably a fraction of truth in that. Some people trying burn off a pasture or thicket, and doing it without guidance or permits or support from the local county volunteer fire department -- thinking it's easier to get forgiveness than permission. And some of the un-authorized "burns" then get into the stats as "wildfires" even if they never jump a property line.

Hard to tell what's what in that small fraction.

    1. Greg. that hurts my heart. I was based for Five years at Medford.
Also just looking at how that fire spread, I'd say Arson but what do I know, I spent nearly ten years fighting wildfire from a DC7..

  10. Why have Arsonists when you have the USFS in charge. The Big fire, Beachie Creek in Oregon's McKenzie river area was a 25 acre lighting caused fire.but because it was ina wildness area-they let it burn.
Now comes a wind event and no more wilderness, towns and people..
Somebody's gonna get sued. It isn't going to be Kate's "Black is the
new Brown's" Global warming Faeries, either..
As an old Aerial firefighter this whole thing's been gnawing at me for days...

  11. If you spend 15 minutes paying attention you will notice that the progressive cultists advertise what they're going to do long before they do it. Setting fires, riots in selected cities, organized groups of mobile agitators who go where ever a police shooting occurs. All of these things have been said openly, and only now that their revolution is making the left look bad are they changing their optics. The antifa kids used to sport chinese communist and soviet flags at all of their rallies, now they use a black flag with a red star on it. Progressives are the cult of virtue signaling, just pay attention and they will tell you what they did and what they're going to do out in the open.

  14. Smokey says “Only you can prevent Forrest fires”. True that. Every year, we have our share of brush, grass and forest fires. Over the last four years, the ones I’ve been involved with were all started by humans. All but one was unintentional. A sizable portion of Our county is within a national forest. Thankfully, the forestry folks do a great job with controlled burns, etc. to properly manage the forest. Blaming global warming and Mother Nature is a crock.

  15. I live in Washington, and we had a wildfire causing us to evacuate when it got within a mile of our house last week. It was started by a tree falling on a powerline, which damaged a transformer. The transformer sparked and caused the fire. Most people are unaware of the fact that Washington state gets virtually no rain between July and September leaving grass and shrubbery tinder dry.
