Politico looked down its nose and sneered in a headline, "Southern governors create a COVID-19 coalition and experts fear a 'perfect storm.'" Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of COVID-19 will stay these snobs from their appointed rounds of bigotry.Next time a Cat 5 hurricane threatens Miami, I fully expect New York City to evacuate.— Bill Mitchell (@mitchellvii) April 22, 2020
The story said, "Republican governors across the Southeast are teaming up to reopen the region’s economy, even as they lack the testing to know how rapidly the corona virus is spreading.
"One health expert called the political decision a 'perfect storm' for the virus to reassert itself.
"The newly formed coalition includes Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi, a part of the country that has underfunded health systems, as well as high rates of obesity, diabetes and other illnesses that amplify the deadliness of the corona virus.
"And unlike their peers in New York, New Jersey and other Northeastern states that have been working cooperatively since last week to restart their economies, the six in the South have lagged on testing and social distancing measures."
Those sophisticated Northerners are much better organized than these hicks.
The facts just called. There have been 2,351 COVID-19 deaths in those 6 states, whose combined population is 51,956,382.
There have been 21,716 COVID-19 deaths in New York and New Jersey, population 28,335,751.
Deaths per 1 million people are 1,004 in New York, 535 in New Jersey, 137 nationally, 79 in Georgia, 61 in Mississippi, 42 in Florida, 39 in Alabama, 27 in South Carolina, and 24 in Tennessee.
Looks like the SEC is doing fine (except for Louisiana).
The Big East is shell-shocked.
COVID-19 is nowhere near the problem in those 6 states as it is in New York and New Jersey.
That is to be expected. Communicable diseases hit urban areas hardest. Over the last century and a half, New York City has been a world leader in taming the beast. Past pandemics were far more devastating.
Hurricanes are the bane of existence in the South. Over the years, they have tamed that beast.
What hasn't evolved is journalism. The same prejudices and one-sided stories that plagued it in the days of yellow journalism are around today. This story shifted the goalposts to make the South look bad.
Politico reported, "As of Tuesday morning, the six states had collectively tested about one-tenth of 1 percent of their total populations. Mississippi, which ranks 15th nationally in testing, had the group’s best testing rate at 1.7% of its population. Georgia was the lowest, with a testing rate of less than one one-hundredth of 1%, or 42nd in the country, according to the Covid Tracking Project.
"By comparison, the coalition of seven states in the Northeast has a collective testing rate twice that of the Southeast, having swabbed more than two-tenths of 1 percent of their collective population.
"Five of the seven states included in the Northeastern coalition are in the top 15 nationally in per capita testing."
Nowhere in the story is the death rate mentioned.
How many people actually died of COVID-19 should matter more than how many passed the test.
We were told we had to stay indoors to flatten the curve. We did. Now is the time to free the prisoners. We served our time. Open the country up already.
Damn Yankees...
ReplyDeleteThey are releasing the convicts. Now, it is time to release the honest people.
ReplyDeleteThe idiots are acting like taking a test will save lives. If it's gonna gitch ya, it's gonna gitch ya!
oklahoma closed schools, gov offices, bars and shifted restaurants to take out.
ReplyDeleteeverything else stayed open. dollar general put up some plexiglass at check outs.
because rural folks aren't wussies.
I pay more attention to avoiding ticks in the woods. for the same reason I avoid tv.
blood sucking disease vectors, whether mad ticks or mad ave are just potholes in the path.

The focus on testing is ludicrous. Do these idiots not know (i.e., are they willfully stupid or just plain stupid?) that tests don't predict the future? If you test negative and then get the virus, the test is worthless.
ReplyDelete(Eye roll!) Their stupidity to the nth power is on display . . . again!
Laura
Multiply all deaths by 30% and you'll have the real number of Oriental Lung Rash deaths since CDC and Medicare are counting anything as a probable.
ReplyDeleteAlso, to bolster the call to let my people go, a confirmed death earlier than thought and realization Peking Pulmonary Pox much earlier than thought (Stanford seems to have done some good work).
We Tennessee folks are our usual independent, freedom-loving selves (I am not including the city of Memphis). It’s springtime, and we want to be outdoors...the wife and I are going through withdrawal because they even closed Gatlinburg. Enough is enough, and kudos to our gov for finally getting with it.
ReplyDeleteGovernor Cooper in NC: man up! I know that’s a stretch for a commiecrat, but there are more than a few North Carolinians who can help you with that.
Memphis has skewed some of the numbers in Mississippi. So has a little seepage in the south, up from New Orleans. Even with over-reported numbers, the cure has been worse than the virus.
DeleteAn added bonus is that plans for opening up is pissing of the media.
Memphis is in Tennessee. Are you suggesting that people from MS who work in Memphis are bringing the kung fu flu home with them? I can see that since a lot of MS people do cross over into Memphis.
DeleteYes SCBen, and the Memphians who work in MS brought it too.
DeleteI really question the number of deaths due to the cross-border relationship - how many of the 61 are due to other things and the county below Memphis and those on the coast near New Orleans/Slidell are just blaming it on the Red Communist China Virus.
I get a report every day from our Fire Chief. The death totals except for two counties are mostly south of Memphis and North and North East of New Orleans/Slidell. Don't know what the circumstances are in the two anomalous counties or how accurate the reported numbers are.
The South should collect all the Darwin awards they deserve. By all means open up. The epidemiological data could use a nice control group.
ReplyDeleteAtalanta and Philadelphia jumped the gun in 1918 and we got some really good data.
Yeah you stupid hypocritical dishonest Chinese troll. Go ahead. Wish for deaths. Don just explained where the higher death rates are, but you hope for the Southern states to reach the levels of your leftist cultist blue states.
DeleteToo bad you and your stupid leftist cultists in the media will be shown to be WRONG again. You do realize the sun shines brighter and longer in the Southern states, and it has been shown that the Kung Flu virus is killed by sunlight? Oh, that's right. You wouldn't know that, because you and your leftist cultists are DUMB.
If it wasn't clear when this whole panic started, it should be clear by now. The leftist cult wanted this economic shut down, aided by the leftist media driving a panic, and they want it to continue as long as possible to hurt Trump and his reelection chances. It's just the latest attempt by them to diminish Trump. Thanks to the example of the Southern states in reopening their economies, the rest of the red states in the US will follow. I hope the blue states resist as long as they can. Their idiot residents should be ready to revolt when they see the red states rebounding.
LOLGF you leftist cultists.

Delete@Douglas DC -- Well, Philly is next to South Jersey.
DeleteAnonymous lefty dem. You and your ilk are amusing.NY's Deblasio has the Darwin awards cornered. Now back under your bed and we'll let you know when it's safe to come out.
DeleteThe Mason/Dixon line does some 'interesting stuff around them parts.
DeleteTurns out that about 2 minutes in the sunshine kills the virus. So naturally, our Democrat betters want us to stay out of the sun. Hummm. I wonder why.
ReplyDeleteSorry Don, but there have been 893 COVID-19 deaths here in Florida, per the Dept. of Health website.
ReplyDeletehttps://floridahealthcovid19.gov/
And most of them in 3 counties in South Florida. Where NYers went when they left NY, and where most of the cruises leave from. The deaths in most of the rest of the state are rather low. Yet, the whole state is in shut down mode because of those 3 counties.
DeleteFLOlson
Don's numbers were per million population.
DeleteDeaths per 1 million people are 1,004 in New York.
DeleteDeaths per 1 million people are 42 in Florida.
That makes Florida 24 times safer than NY.
Yet, as I stated above, Florida is in lockdown due to the 3 counties in the south of the state. Stupidity. And, after reading what is happening in Sweden, where they did NOT shut down their economy, it is looking more and more as if this is no worse than 2018's flu season, which was bad, but the economy wasn't shut down. The left needs to pay for this generated panic over a bad case of the flu, in some way.

My wife just got word from a friend that a 59 year old teacher acquaintance “died of Wuhan.” Her friend then added that the woman had been battling cancer for a year and was not doing well.
ReplyDeleteWe’re being lied to. Open the fooking country already.
I haves long wondered what percentage of blamed deaths are really truly honestly a result of the Res Communist China Virus.
DeletePuzzling how the biased MSM omits relevant facts/data, and uses the irrelevant ones to feed their leftist base and provide them ammunition to marginalize us Deplorables. They just lap it up and no matter how foolish they look when the dust settles and the facts are clear, they keep repeating the process. Clearly, they meet the definition of crazy.
ReplyDeleteJournalists hope you are as ignorant as they are.
ReplyDelete.
Tests, when available, have always been for the sickest people.
The Southeast used few tests because we had few sick people and thus we shouldnt be held in our homes against our will while our economy shrivels and dies
We have LONG been subjected to the SUPERIOR WISDOM of Northerners! They came SOUTH when they destroyed THEIR jobs up north with their union demands - and I bet a majority of THEIR jobs went to CHINA! We have bumper stickers that read "We don't give a sh*t how you did it up north"! I'll trust the common sense of most of us vs the "elite" journalists/globalists from "up north"!
ReplyDeleteAmen! I'm now a southerner transplanted from MD/DE to FL. But don't worry, I didn't bring the northerner's mentality with me.
DeleteThe urge for testing the entire population is what the left is all about. Statism.
ReplyDeleteWhat about the people who are tested...show false positive...and have their lives disrupted?
Infallible test? I wouldn't count on it.
Not one of the well-coiffed Media Millionaires has missed a paycheck.
ReplyDeleteNot one pontificating Academic has missed a paycheck.
No government employee, every government bureaucrat, every political appointee and the elected leaders have missed a paycheck.
22.000,000 USAmericans are NOT getting a paycheck and retirement savings of millions are tanking.
I just read where those geniuses in New York state forced nursing homes to accept Wuhan Flu patients. Guess what happened?
ReplyDeleteI have to admit that it has been rather encouraging to see the consistently constant NE/West Coast's put-down of the Southern people as ignorant back-woods imbeciles expanded to include all Trump supporters.
ReplyDeleteKinda makes me feel the majority of the country's voters are coming around to our point of view.
What the NE/West Coaster's have never understood, and still do not understand, is that Southern people are, in the majority, secure in our beliefs, our intelligence, our abilities to compete, and as Rhett famously said, frankly couldn't give a damn what they think of us.
American by birth, Southern by the Grace of God
