A possible COVID-19 treatment

Gilead Sciences, a biotech company, developed Remdesivir to treat Ebolae and the Marburg virus infection. It had some success against MERS and SARS. The company hopes this can work against COVID-19.

Josh Bloom at the American Council on Science and Health reviewed it and said keep your fingers crossed.

He wrote, "Remdesivir is a fairly potent inhibitor of corona virus replication with no obvious toxicity. It may or may not work as a pill but this is irrelevant at this time since it will probably be given IV. In another study in rhesus monkeys, data indicated that a significant concentration of the drug will be found in the blood and that an adequate quantity of the drug should be delivered to the sites where it is needed.

"Given the properties of Remdesivir as well as the desperate need for a corona virus therapy, I would estimate that the drug has at least a 50% chance of becoming the first drug to treat the virus."

Repurposing drugs is not uncommon. Viagra was not developed for the purpose what now is its most common use.

Andrew Joseph at STAT News explained how it works.

He wrote, "The trick is that Remdesivir does not go after the virus directly. Instead, it targets the system the virus uses to replicate itself, hijacking it like you would your office’s copy machine as part of a company-wide prank.

"These viruses have a genome that consists of a strand of RNA. To make copies of themselves, they rely on a molecule called a polymerase to string together the individual building blocks of the viral genome. These are like the letters that we think of composing DNA."

He said Gilead CEO Daniel O’Day pitched the promise of the drug at a meeting with President Donald John Trump.

The president said, "Get it done, Daniel. Don’t disappoint us, Daniel."

Alex Keown at BioSpace splashed some cold water on this in a piece called, "A Paper Raises Some Safety Concerns for Gilead’s COVID-19 Treatment."

But the paper is unpublished and based on three patients.

Other companies also are working on treatments. The timeline for developing the drug is long, which is why people hope some company can 'take something off the shelf to treat it.

This is not encouraging or discouraging. My hope is this will ease the panic.

  1. If I were to contract “the novel” I would try everything, including freakin estrogen, to knock it out. Zinc, Vitamin C, dead Spanish flu virus, Spanish fly, Mexican jumping beans, Jumpin Jack Flash, six straight hours of disco dancing, forsythia tea, Cat Stevens music, and even boiled Paw Paw. Not just the sink, the whole fooking kitchen.

    1. The trouble with shotgun medicine is, even if it works, you'll never know which pellet did the trick.
When I once made a smart remark about "Montezuma's Revenge" my Bolivian friend just said: "You're supposed to drink the tequila FIRST!"

  2. I still do not understand all the panic here in the USA. Someone touted S Korea as the model for fighting it. only 75 deaths out of the 51 million pop. Here, around 100 deaths out of over 350 million. Does that mean if populations were equal, S. Korea would have over 500 deaths? Would they then still be model for fighting it?

  3. 2 Australian docs think they may have the cure. It was using an HIV drug and an anti malaria drug.

As for panic its only at the official level. Once it reaches the public then you'd better be prepared. I give it one more month unless the Aussie docs are correct.

    GREAT POST!

So many in media mangle complex science disclosures I expected this to be yet another wild goose chase with obvious holes in the microbiology.

I'm triggered when someone says "polymerase" and does not explain WHICH polymerase they referred to. Since Covid-19 is a Positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus. You have to interfere with the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase biological pathway to have any effect. Simply saying "polymerase" usually refers to Eukaryotic DNA polymerase(s).

However Don linked the very good Stat article that explains Remdesivir's mechanism of action very nicely in layman's terms without losing scientific precision.

Again good job in finding a decent explanation of the microbiology, Remdesivir looks very promising.

  5. Trump is in desperation mode now he wants to send cash to everyone in a panic attempt to prop up Wall St
    .
Next will be the fight over who gets bailed out and who they let go bankrupt. The line is already forming from Vegas to DC.

By then interest rates will go negative like the EU as the bubble finally found a pin.

You Americans are getting the government you surely deserve.

    1. Not sure about a British study Ed but it has become common knowledge that Big Pharma lobbyists - with help of Republicans - inserted into the $8.3 billion coronavirus spending package language that won't cap/regulate companies from maximizing their profits from this pandemic. Look it up. There are no caps/no limits on Big Pharma for profits off any drug/vaccine developed for coronavirus. Thus, your $8.3 billion of tax payer money is going to reap 50-fold (or more) what Big Pharma will make off this pandemic. I knew Trump was hollow when he said he was going to reel in big pharma gouging.
Yep, AG offices will strike you down for selling a small bottle of hand sanitizer for $10 bucks but won't sniff at $300 insulin treatments or $800 epipens. Go Joe Manchin. Go Trump. Two of a kind.

    2. OK the 8.3 billion will generate 50 times the profit, or "what they will make" for big pharma which will be approximately 415 billion - these are your figures. They then pay the corporate tax rate of 21 percent on the 415 billion, which is 87 billion dollars back to the Treasury. According to your figures, Trump will make $78.7 billion for the American taxpayer with this deal!

You socialists are so bad at math! LOL

    3. Eric - stupid and inaccurate post. Big pharma companies DO NOT pay 21 percent corporate tax. Trump's corporate tax cuts early in his term spared the 10 biggest pharm companies more than 50 billion in untaxed profits. If you quit listening to crack pot radio and did real research, you would see this is just a tip of how big pharma continues to rack up record profits and provide no relief to taxpayers.

Research will also show you that the Pharma Big 10 had $506 billion in untaxed profits stashed offshore in 2016. These profits increased by 65% from 2011, as drug prices soared. U.S. tax law allows companies to indefinitely delay paying federal taxes on profits booked and kept offshore.

Before you post something stupid again Eric, answer these two questions first. Is $800 for a life-saving Epipen (that costs just dollars in other countries) a just cost? Do you think what you pay for any meds you/your parents/your grandparents pay are justly priced? Don't be such a buffoon.

    4. I'm selling my pickup truck for 1 million dollars. You have no more right to tell me what I can sell my truck for than I do to make someone buy it at this ridiculous price. It's a free country. Nobody will buy my truck so nobody is harmed by my stupid and unfair pricing policy. If I ever want to get cash for this truck I will obviously have to lower my asking price to what the market will bear.

We're not going to put you (or anyone) in charge of the Fairness Department!
