Writing off gun owners

Tim Alberta of Politico went back home to see what is happening in rural Michigan. He attended the Mid-Michigan Gun & Knife Show. The result was a piece, "How the Gun Show Became the Trump Show."

He interviewed Michael Schenk, 56, a man with "the permanent pain of injuries he suffered over years of work as a lineman and tree trimmer," as Alberta wrote.

Schenk was not there for guns or knives, Alberta wrote, "Rather, he wanted to peruse the collection of pro-Trump baseball caps and possibly find a sturdier back brace designed for outdoorsman activities."

In response to a question from Alberta, Schenk said, "Wait a minute. You think there are Democrats — here?"

Once vast herds of Democrats roamed the plains of western Michigan. Schenk said, "When I was a kid, we were all poor, and it seemed like everyone was a Democrat. These days, I don't know any."

Democrats have embraced abortion and gun control, among other things. Abortion is not a deal breaker. The pro-life movement faces the problem of abortion being declared a right. It's not but abortion advocates did good PR on that one.

Gun control is a deal breaker because gun ownership is an enumerated right. People know the real aim is gun confiscation.

We have had gun control for 52 years. If you are a felon or crazy, you cannot buy a gun. Wife-beaters and people dishonorably discharged from the military cannot buy guns. The list of people banned is long. You can only buy from a licensed gun dealer and they must check out every buyer even at a gun show. [UPDATE: People have pointed out individuals may sell among themselves. I forgot.]

Gallup reported 43% of Americans live in a gun-owning household.

Democrats have written that 43% off in their pursuit of Hispanic and black voters. Only 26% of Hispanic households and 29% of black households have a gun.

50% of white households do.

Perhaps Democrats hope we will all just die off so they can make the USA North Mexico.

If you write off 43% of the voters, you had better be sure the other 57% are in your corner because math says you need 89% of them.

It is their problem, not mine. I officially switched parties in 2002.

  1. Great point! And can there be any doubt that the national exposure of the virginia state legislature's intent to criminalize most firearms, won't have an effect nationwide with gun owners this election?? Millions of democrats are also gun owners. Democrats run that entire government. Not a republican anywhere in the statehouse, so this serves as a preview of what happens when democrats are put in control!!

  2. My Michigander In laws were both labor Dems. My Father -in-law was a gun collector and avid as in to the point of mental damage an outdoors man.( He and his ice fishing buddies got mad at he coast guard because they wanted to rescue them before the floe they were on broke off in Lake St. Clair..) Any way both in-law voted for Ike, and Reagan. I can see them both voting for Trump.
they both were true red ,white and blue Americans. Now with the Dems in any position of power-you worry about the fall of the Republic..

  3. I wish more media types went to gun shows and other events so they didn't sound so incredibly stupid and ignorant about guns in general. Just general familiarity between what a semi-automatic rifle is, or what constitutes a "high capacity magazine" would be helpful. The fact they can't even be bothered to learn the basics does not speak well of them as professionals and makes them easy to dismiss anything they write, out of hand.

    1. What you wish for makes a lot of sense. Therein lies the rub. Media types have no sense or intelligence. If they did they wouldn't be media types.

  4. " You can only buy from a licensed gun dealer . . ."

Love the article, love all your articles, but . . . I can sell you my gun, and I'm not a licensed dealer.

    1. Being from Texas, so can I. I suspect that varies by state. I've no idea of Michigan laws.

    2. Great! Meet me in the Walmart parking lot, far corner, blue pickup, it'll be cash and a handshake.
But how do I know it hasn't been reported stolen?

    3. Only if the two of you are a residents of/in the same state, otherwise you must transfer through a federally licensed dealer and have a background check completed.

    4. Greg, private sales require a degree of trust. How can I know the lawnmower or milling machine or set of pans or the backhoe or the car being sold privately aren't stolen? It requires the buyer trusting you the seller, and the seller trusting the buyer. And if anything hinky by the buyer or seller occurs, private sales stop.

There is the same degree of trust needed when buying from a 'real' dealer, either a new stuff selling shop or a used stuff selling shop.

    5. Some states now require a background check to be performed on sales between private parties.

This is designed to close the so-called "gun show loophole", whereby individuals could meet at guns shows to buy & sell.

    6. In states where private party transactions aren't subject to background checks, some sellers will sell only to holders of concealed carry permits. This insures they are selling only to someone who has passed the Sheriff's criminal background check.

Some states used to accept a CHL in lieu of a background check.

    7. "Meet me in the Walmart parking lot"..nobody would buy a gun from a stranger without a bill of sale and verifying a local drivers license for fear of being accused of stealing or receiving stolen property [firearm], that's Federal prison ....Earl.

    8. I live in Michigan and as I understand the law on private sales, long guns and shotguns can be sold without any issue. Hand guns, on the other hand require a sales receipt with the serial number to be filed with the local PD or county sheriff within 10 days.

  5. If Gallup, or another pollster, called you and asked if you had a firearm(s)would you say "yes" if you did? A large %age would lie. It's not their business.

    2. My doc doesn’t bother to ask anyone. We always discuss the stupid parts of the HIPAA regs and that is one of the stupidest. I told him if he ever asked me, I would answer “what is a gun?” He said he didn’t know what one is either, he just had to ask!!

Gallup or any pollster- no way they would get any accurate info on any topic from me.

  6. Grew up in the house with Dad's hunting shotguns hanging on the wall gun rack...same for the attachable plastic one used to hang the guns behind the station wagon's front seat during hunting season (waterfowl)>>> the good ol' days...I am careful (near wary/ fearful) when I have the hunting shotgun in the back of the Suburban now, with my hunting license at the ready to show law enforcement during the hunting season...Helluva way to feel with my 2nd Amendment right, huh? 7. I'd just read the article before your post. I'm skeptical of anything under the Politico banner, but it was surprisingly well written. Maybe Tim Alberta has learned at thing or two from Salena Zito. If journalism is to rehabilitate itself, this is how it's done.

  8. The writer of that article should get out to more gun shows. They've had a heavy focus on freedom and freedom supporting politicians since I've gone to them over a couple of decades.

  9. "Gallup reported 43% of Americans live in a gun-owning household.

Democrats have written that 43% off in their pursuit of Hispanic and black voters. Only 26% of Hispanic households and 29% of black households have a gun.

    50% of white households do."

Baloney. Those stats should all say "XX% of __________ households REPORTED having a gun." And I think people have been lying about it for so long, they probably need to multiply those percentages by 1.5 or 2 to even get close to being accurate.

Stats show the answer to that survey question ("Do you have a gun in your home?") has varied between 37% and 45% during the period of 2000-2019, with the most recent percentage of "Yes" responses being 37% in 2019 (DOWN from 43% in 2018? Yeah, right).

During the same approximate time frame of 1998-2017 (not an exact match, because the BATFE stat reporting lags by several years), there were well over 110 million firearms made in the USA. A small percentage were exported or sold to Law Enforcement agencies, but the VAST majority were purchased by Americans for personal use.

Anecdotal data: During the last 5 years, two local indoor shooting ranges have held recurring "New Gun Owner" training classes. As the title implies, these are for new gun owners, people who have never owned a gun before. They are almost always full, but for a few no-shows.

There is no way existing American gun owners soaked-up 100-million-plus new guns in the last two decades without a significant rise in household gun ownership.

    1. We always seemed to get too many excuses from the gun control crowd - but the yearly and monthly news report said don't lie. More than a few gun shop owners in my area will respond that sales have gone through the roof since obozo was in office. And the dumocrats are all slack jawed about it and just can't believe it.
