TDS Peggy agrees with Trump but won't admit it

In her first column in the new year, Peggy Noonan showed she learned nothing from last year. She still thinks President Donald John Trump is a buffoon who is unfit for public office. But I noticed, her political positions are swinging his way.

She threw in the towel on impeachment, writing, "It will be the impeachment that didn’t move the needle, that history barely remembers."

And she threw in the towel on an economic bust, writing, "It isn’t true that America will never go socialist. Maybe it will, but not under current conditions — full employment, rising wages."

Curse that good economy. Mind you, she wrote this in the Wall Street Journal.

An Iranian War is her one hope. Well, she is a neocon after all. She wrote, "Underlying his eventual decisions will be an unspoken theme of his re-election campaign: I’ve been president three years and the world didn’t blow up. My critics said it would because I’m crazy. I’m crazy like a fox! I kept things cool. That theme is about to be put to a test."

But here is where her column got interesting. She started dissing Red China.

She wrote, "In the 2020s, the American position on China will harden — not the government’s but the country’s. Whatever happens with the administration and China, Mr. Trump will think it’s about him and lose interest when it appears not to be. But among the people, especially the business class, the perception will deepen that China is not our friend. Channeling this into the creation of an actual coherent China policy will be the big work of the next administration. This one doesn’t do coherent."

Gone is the free market defense of Red China, replaced by an alarm that Red China is not our friend.

President Trump has been saying that for 5 years. He in fact has pushed Americans away from protecting Red China from criticism. He imposed tariffs that forced Red China to negotiate a trade deal that will be signed on January 15.

The president does do coherent, very very well as a matter of fact. He talks to CEOs who started dealing with Red China only to be caught in a trap where the communists confiscate technology. He also talks to world leaders who also are stuck in a Chinese puzzle on trade. He has their back and their backing, and Chairman Xi knows that.

She wrote, "The belief that big tech needs to be corralled — to be broken up or declared public utilities— will grow on the left and right. The big companies are too powerful and have too insinuating an effect on our lives. This won’t be Mr. Trump’s issue — again he thinks it’s about him, and whether their algorithms are unjust to him and to conservatives. He wants big tech to bow to him, and they will. They’ll come for dinner, be his pals and work out deals. They think he can be had. He can. But the issue isn’t going away, and wise lefties and creative conservatives may fully seize it."

As a plentiful victim of social media censorship, Donald John Trump knows the need to get the companies to back off on bowing to the SJW crowd. He also knows tasking a federal agency to oversee Facebook and the rest is an invitation to SJW censorship. She thinks he can be had.

So did Hillary.

Speaking of whom, I was delighted with Noonan's penultimate paragraph: "The past decade saw the rise of the woke progressives who dictate what words can be said and ideas held, thus poisoning and paralyzing American humor, drama, entertainment, culture and journalism. In the coming 10 years someone will effectively stand up to them. They are the most hated people in America, and their entire program is accusation: you are racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic; you are a bigot, a villain, a white male, a patriarchal misogynist, your day is over. They never have a second move. Bow to them, as most do, and they’ll accuse you even more of newly imagined sins. They claim to be vulnerable victims, and moral. Actually they’re not. They’re mean and seek to kill, and like all bullies are cowards."

Got that?
their entire program is accusation: you are racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic
Ah yes, the old basket of deplorables rears its head again. And Noonan spoke out against it in 2016.

Sorta.

She never mentioned Hillary's name in thar column. Had Noonan done so, maybe Hillary would have addressed that in a meaningful way and won.

So I thank Noonan for pulling that punch in 2016. She now has the president she did not want but really needed. And he is changing her mind on Red China and about social media because he is right. That's leadership.

  2. Didn't you claim that Noonan isn't relevant?

Sorta like how you don't dwell on Hillary?

If you ignored them any more they'd need a restraining order.

    1. Noonan is relevant in the same way that a hemorrhoid is relevant to being free of a pain in the hindquarters.

That is, she's irrelevant to your personal health, but she doesn't sit well with functioning members.

She thinks she's a vital organ but is really only a pain in the a**.

  4. Noonan wrote a speech once. Does that make her some sort of authority on matters Trump? Middle East? Chinese?

And she accuses Trump of 'thinking it's all about HIM'?

  6. Don, those quotes from the Noonan column make me regret ever paying her heed. But she does provide good insight into the #NeverTrump mentality.

The underlying message is simply this: what does Trump have that we NeverTrumpers don't have?

Why, look at us! We are professionals in the public arena! We are educated at all the right schools. We are polite and well-spoken, and take showers every day! And we use soap, too! Not the blank, Ivory-type soap, but scented! Perfumed!

And we are the True Conservatives!!!! Don't ever forget that! When Trump was wasting his time building hotels and getting rich, why, we were in the front lines! We were getting shot at by liberals and Democrats, even when we waved a white flag! We were the ones working on all the planks in the conservative platform! Sure, we didn't get any of them passed, but we can frown and look concerned much better than Trump can on his best day!

And this is the appreciation we get! Trump steals our platform and gets all the credit for all the hard work we put into not getting anything implemented as policy!

And we always genuflected toward Ronald Reagan! What more do the deplorables want?

  7. Pre-emptive strike against Susan?
A little off-topic but this quote from Adam Ellwanger expresses something I have felt but not been able to verbalize as well as he does in the Spectator:
"Whataboutism isn’t a defense of Trump; it is a rejection of the insincerity evident in the loud histrionics that now follow every tweet, drone strike, or other action by the president (until a Democrat sits in the Oval Office again). Whataboutism sends a message: your inconsistencies are nakedly ideological, and your hypocritical performance of outrage is a dishonest way to influence the public debate. Ultimately, whataboutism is a necessary strategy for the political moment: it enforces some rhetorical accountability from those who feign urgency and desperation as a means to advance a transparently partisan agenda."
The article is (aptly enough) called "Whataboutism and the Shifting Rhetoric of the Anti-War Left." I like his quote from Emerson: “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.” Note the word foolish. Well thought-out and expressed, read the whole thing at https://spectator.org/whataboutism-and-the-shifting-rhetoric-of-the-anti-war-left/.

    1. That most certainly applies to the stupid hypocritical dishonest troll, BJ. As I've said, it is the ultimate hypocrite, since it trolls. Thus, it has never had any standing to judge anyone on any thing. Including whataboutism (hypocrisy).

Suck it stupid hypocritical dishonest troll. Suck it hard. Suck it good, you lonely idiot loser.

  9. Maybe Noonan is speaking for others by going Gervais on The Woke.

That, or it is a slow time for cocktail parties and once the season kicks back in, the elites will forget she wrote those words.

  10. I liked Peggy Noonan and was very sad that she sunk so deep into the depths of never-Trump derangement. It's nice to see that she is beginning to rise out of that abyss. Since she was speaking of China, let's quote an old Chinese proverb: A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Ms. Noonan has taken a few steps in the right direction, and that is very much a good thing, but she has many many miles to go.

  11. All of the public arguments against Trump by Republicans have all been emotional and about style. Even when Trump has given what they publicly stated they have desired for decades, they still oppose.

So, what they publicly say is actually why they oppose (rude, crude, style, etc) or their are underlying, unstated reasons like $$ from China, Russia, Ukraine, etc.

Maybe it's one or the other or combination of both.

Either way, these people should be routinely rejected as nefarious actors.
