Buttigieg alienated black voters

The New York Times was dismayed to learn that people in South Bend, Indiana, expect their mayor, presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg to do his job. Crime is up. Homicides rose 30% in his seven years as mayor. And his police force is getting whiter while his city is getting blacker.

The Times reported, "Policing problems in South Bend came to national attention on June 16, when a white sergeant fatally shot a 54-year-old black resident, Eric Logan. The officer’s body camera was not turned on, which was widely seen as a sign of lax standards in the department. Mr. Buttigieg found himself flying home again, regularly, to face the fury of some black citizens and the frustrations of many others.

"It is the great paradox of Mr. Buttigieg’s presidential candidacy: His record on public safety and policing, once largely a footnote in his political biography, has overshadowed his economic record in South Bend, which he had spent years developing as a calling card for higher office."

Why would crime be a footnote?

The first job of any mayor should be public safety.

If the good people of South Bend wanted a high homicide rate, they would move to Chicago.

The story headline read, "Pete Buttigieg Was Rising. Then Came South Bend’s Policing Crisis."

By policing crisis, the Times means black voter rebellion.

The Times reported, "In a recent Fox News poll, he earned less than 1 percent support from black Democratic primary voters."

One in four Democrat voters is black. They distrust him.

26% of his town is black.

6% of his police force is black.

The Times reported, "On another front, minority police hiring, South Bend under Mr. Buttigieg took a step in reverse. There are now just 15 black officers in the police department, down from 29 in 2012, according to city data and local news reports."

Oh?

The story said, "In Mr. Buttigieg’s first months in office, he demoted the city’s first black police chief, Darryl Boykins, which the mayor acknowledged damaged relations between the police and minorities for years."

Oh?

The story said, "Mr. Buttigieg replaced Mr. Boykins with a white police chief, Ron Teachman, who he recruited from a department in Massachusetts. Like the mayor, Mr. Teachman had a reputation as a technocrat, interested in technology and academic approaches to crime solving."

Technocrat is a polite way of saying smart but incompetent. The press often used the word to describe Mike Dukakis, the 1988 Democrat presidential candidate. He, too, looked like Alfred E. Neuman.

Councilman Oliver Davis told the Times, "If you build up the downtown and fix all the potholes but your police officers are killing people, your people are not around to enjoy it. That is the key issue with Mayor Pete."

Black voters are right about Buttigieg. He just is not good enough.

His candidacy looks good on paper. He is a veteran, Harvard graduate, and mayor. Ed Muskie, Gary Hart, and John Edwards also looked good on paper. But in the rock-paper-scissors game of politics, life chooses scissors.

    2. Only Democrats in that boat? You can't be taken seriously if your comment is blatantly partisan. (BTW, I assume you mean Democrats and not democrats - people who participate in, or believe in, the democratic process.)

  2. Sadly, if the city is getting blacker, that alone may explain the rising murder rate. 50% of all US murders are committed by blacks, mostly men.

  4. Black police officers can find a job somewhere that actually values their contributions, which it appears they judged that Mayor Pete did not.

  6. Maybe Pete should focus on running for governor or Senator. POTUS is not an entry-level position.

What difference does the race of a police chief make?

  8. Last night I was at a local supermarket. I helped a young black woman find her cellphone. Her little daughter was a real cutie. I asked her-what are you doing in NE Oregon? "on my way to see my husband ship out.
US Navy-going to Bangor . "(Trident Sub I wagered) "USS Jimmy Carter" Hmm .. I said "I will pray for you."
The Carter is a "specialty" ship didn't want to pry further so I left it at that.

    2. What does any of this have to do with the sunject? A story that you were nice to a black lady, followed a thinly veiled joke at the USS Jimmy Carter and ending in a straw man argument about racism?!? Ridiculous

  11. As a career bubblehead having served on 4 "boats" SSBN type, I can say the crews all knew and joked about jimmy carter, nice guy but no business running a nation. Mayor pete's major claim to fame, as we all know but might be afraid to speak up, is HES HOMOSEXUAL and married to a guy. Thats why hollywood is pushing him so.....

    1. I worked for a Defense contractor during Jimmy's reign. Was around a lot of personnel who thought the same. Some actually knew and worked with him-this was the Hanford Area in Washington State. He did work
hard to save that Canadian Reactor in Ontario .. But he pushed outlawing reprocessing-we wouldn't have near the problem now if we did that..

  16. This article literally took one that is barely journalism, took out selective paragraphs to write a particular narrative without addressing the counterargument, and essentially lied by omission on everything he's done there. You should feel bad for writing a piece as bad as this and your readers should really reconsider where they get their info from and learn to spot bias in reporting.

    1. Um, Don Surber isn't a reporter. He makes a living writing with bias about current events. What did you expect when you decided to read this? A paraphrase?

  17. As an independent that hates identity politics, this article was a poorly contrived attempt to influence those that can’t define Due diligence, let alone use it properly and thoroughly. What in the world made this Don Surber person ever think he was capable of being taken serious in the writing industry when he can’t even include facts, both sides of why things developed the way they did, include in this article why the police forces in other cities(especially ones the size of South Bend) have the same issues in recruiting minority officers. I suggest he go back to school and learn a little more about journalism and lose the “Hit Piece” mentality that permeates the many other hacks out there.
