Republican wins in LA

How is the Green New Deal working out for Democrats? Republican John Lee ran against it and won a seat on city council in LA.

Breitbart News reported, "Lee, a former City Hall staffer, attacked the Green New Deal and received support from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 18. The IBEW, which is the largest union representing Department of Public Works employees, typically backs Democrats. However, worries about job losses due to the Green New Deal spurred the union to back the Republican in a relatively conservative area Democrats hoped to flip."

But I thought the Green New Deal was supposed to create jobs, save the planet, and make your mouth kissably fresh.

The Los Angeles Times is bitter with the result. It reported, "Astrophysicist and college educator Loraine Lundquist ran for office with a promise to take on the status quo, saying she would shake up Los Angeles City Hall by ending pay-to-play politics and scrutinizing decisions with the eye of a scientist.

"Lundquist’s bid for a seat on the City Council energized Democrats, environmentalists and progressive activists eager to win over a San Fernando Valley district long represented by Republicans.

"But Lundquist ran into a buzz saw of opposition from some of City Hall’s most experienced players, including business groups, the police officers’ union and former council members who represented the northwest Valley for generations. All lined up behind longtime City Hall aide John Lee, who emerged victorious Wednesday."

The newspaper told voters: You fools! You knaves passed on an astrophysicist who opposed corruption in favor of an insider.

The Green New Deal was buried in Paragraph 8.

Before the election, the LA Times said it was all about the Green New Deal, reporting, "For decades, campaigns for city office in the San Fernando Valley foothills have been animated by intensely local issues such as traffic congestion, real estate development, and preserving the culture of horse keeping.

"But this year, an idea that has erupted on the national stage — the Green New Deal — has become a polarizing issue in Tuesday’s special election to fill a northwest Valley council seat.

"Candidate Loraine Lundquist, a Democrat and college instructor, has endorsed L.A.'s version of the Green New Deal, a package of environmental proposals from Mayor Eric Garcetti. She has made battling climate change a core part of her campaign, inspiring activists from across the city."

The story said nothing about the newspaper's heroine opposing corruption.

Suddenly that is the reason she lost, not the Green New Deal. This is how you help turn readers into former readers.

  1. The Green New Deal is California state policy. We will be either the vanguard of a bright new future or in need of C.A.R.E. packages sent from the Midwest, where they still have their heads screwed on straight.

    1. My guess is the C.A.R.E. package option. :-(

    2. California is headed to C.A.R.E. status already. The Green New Deal will just speed the process.

    3. In the Midwest we take CARE of ourselves. We suggest CA learn how to do that as well. Instructions available upon request.

  2. Green New Deal. Communism in a shiny new package but it performs the same as the old version.
" Communism will work if the right people are in charge". Too bad they don't exist.

    1. Spot on with that assessment. In their minds, the Useful Idiots - the right people ARE already in charge - they live in a fantasy world unique to their mental illnesses.

    2. What Jeremy said. Personally, if I see “college professor” on the resume of ANY aspiring politician, that’s a dead stop. Not only No, but Hellz No.

  3. And IBEW is one of the commiest unions out there.

  4. I would rather vote for a crack dealer than the average "college instructor".

  5. And here on the opposite coast in Maine our new communist governor Janet Mills has passed a ridiculous renewable energy bill that will bankrupt our already struggling state, banned the non-existent practice of conversion therapy, changed the sign on Rt 95 as you enter Maine to "welcome home" as she welcomes home thousands of illegal Africans into our largest city, Portland, pop: 60,000 or so. This was after vaporizing the $150,000,000 surplus Gov. LePage left us with in a nanosecond. Don't worry though us folks in York and Cumberland counties will carry the whole rest of the state like we have for the last 50 years.

  7. This has been very good news Don, a small crack in the Dems control in CA, and perhaps a good start for the Conservatives.

  8. Real Astrophysics takes significant brainpower. Lundquist was probably an affirmative-action hire way back when.

She teaches "Sustainability" now at Cal State Northridge...
