Drudge Report is sludge

Conservatives are now writing publicly what they had been saying privately: Matt Drudge has sold out.

The latest to go public is Blaine Traber, who wrote, "Three reasons the Drudge Report is awful."
  1. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not conservative
  2. They love mainstream media sources
  3. The site is quietly becoming anti-Trump
Traber is correct. What a sad, sad end to a promising web site.

The Drudge Report broke the Monica Lewinsky story that Newsweek spiked.

But that was 21 years ago. In the 21st century, the Drudge Report is strictly establishment. Like George Will and Bill Kristol, Drudge has become an acceptable conservative, which means he is no conservative at all.

He no longer sets the agenda. Instead he just lets the New York Times, Washington Post and Wall Street Journal decide what is news. He is setting the clock back to 1998.

Or trying to.

Consider the Gibson Bakery case. A jury awarded the bakery $11 million in actual damages and $33 million in punitive damages after Oberlin smeared it as racist.

Conservatives rejoice.

The big fat rich cats at one of the most liberal schools in the universe just got spanked.

Matt Drudge has not linked one story to the verdict. Not one. I have been waiting for him to do so. Maybe when the New York Times spins the story he will.

Traber wrote, "There are alternatives for conservatives who are tired of Drudge Report’s shifting perspectives. This is no longer a conservative news source. Perhaps it never really was. Today, it’s as anti-Trump as they come."

Indeed there are alternatives.

Lucianne.com is a favorite. I have been an L-Dotter longer than I have been blogging, and I started blogging in 2005.

What Finger News is about to celebrate its first anniversary, I believe. It has come on like gangbusters. And in August, Instapundit will celebrate its 18th anniversary. It remains the guiding light of centrist and right-wing blogs.

Free Republic is still out there. Liberty Daily, too. Those are just the ones off the top of my head.

Matt Drudge can do what he wants. This is America. But like the mainstream media he now mimics, he has lost tons of credibility.

    1. Quit Drudge last year. It was clear, Door Mat sold out. Try OAN, Liberty Daily and/or Whatfinger.

    2. Those are good recommendations, that's who I read for news. Also Doug Ross: directorblue.blogspot.com who has some great links sometimes.

Be careful with Instapundit; many links there go to NRO, which I won't go to since they're still rabidly anti-Trump. I figure they've sold out just like Drudge.

    3. I, as well, have been noticing this swing for many months. It has come to the point that I only visit the website to see what Drudge believes is the top story by reading their headline. Beyond that I have lost interest. If I wanted Left-leaning news I'd go to CNN, which I haven't viewed in roughly twenty-five years.

    4. I quit him a long time ago due to his publishing of every sexually perverted article that he could find. He's a Joo, what do you expect?

  2. Nice to see others have noticed, Don. I switched to Whatfinger a while back and noticed just how badly Drudge leans now.

    1. I noticed awhile back. Been using Liberty Daily among others mentioned.

  3. I've noticed that as well. And also noted the shift over the last few years towards more biased news and less pro-conservatism.

  4. Drudge also seems to have an excess of silly UFO and other pseudo-science tabloid stories

  5. Perhaps he is retiring and taking the easy way by linking conveniently.

  6. I dropped Drudge as well. It was kinda like Little Green Footballs-Interesting news from a conservative slant and then went over to the dark side.

  7. I dropped Drudge several years ago. Don't miss it.

  8. Never heard of Liberty Daily until now. Will check it out. Thanks.

  9. Isn't Lucianne associated with hardcore NeverTrump elitist snot Jonah Goldberg? I give it a pass to be safe.

    1. Yes, I avoid it for that reason. I have yet to find any reason for me to need anything from any NeverTrumper.

  12. Oh geez, lighten up. I agree its taken an anti-trump dip. It is still a good aggregate site to drop off at. If memory serves Drudge was tepid towards Trump in the very beginning when he was in the primaries and then seemed to boost Trump during the election. Its not like Trump doesn't say bone headed things or is beyond reproach. I'll still drop by once a day to see whats going on but then I switch to 3 other sites. I'll live.

Drudge has flipped. His right to do so. My right to not read him any longer.

  13. Ditto. Drudge began seriously losing his way 6-12 months ago. Liberty Daily has something to offer..., but in my opinion CitizenFreePress.com is better.

  17. I visit all the Drudge replacement sites and...

Citizen Free Press is BY FAR the best...

A former Lou Dobbs producer runs the site, with ZERO ads of any sort.

    1. Thanks! That does look like a good site, I've just bookmarked it!

    2. I've been using citizen free press now for a few months and I highly recommend! That type of format is still the best for quickly getting through all the stories. Kane, the apparent genius moderator, also keeps stories up in descending order for quite a while so you can keep scrolling down and see what you missed over the past weeks. Website design, function and production is nearly flawless.

  18. Kind of old news.
I left Drudge a couple of years ago when it became obvious that he was totally anti President Trump.
    He was never "conservative" anyway.
Plenty of alternatives out there to 'ol Sludge".

  19. The point of The Drudge Report has ALWAYS been to make you aware of what "the enemy" (i.e. the left) are saying, NOT to constantly blow the horn for Conservatism. There are plenty of other sources of that information. I don't know why that is so difficult for people to understand.

You read Drudge to find out how we on The Right are being misrepresented in the so-called mainstream media. That is its purpose. I listened to him on the radio for years, and I've been going their for a disgusting snootful of what is being said about us by the left since the 90's.

    I DO appreciate The Liberty Daily, where they aren't afraid to call a f4g a f4g! ;-)

This article is a troll. The point of Drudge is to keep you aware of what we are up against, NOT to demonstrate what he supports. Know your enemy and be strong!

  20. I know I stopped going to his site during the last Republican primaries. The only time I saw an article on Ted Cruz was when he was being attacked. Which to me showed a very biased nature. I never returned.

    ReplyDelete
  21. It was odd with Drudge. I'm sure he was trying to help get Trump elected. Then not long after the election, he went all snarky about Trump. I actually had the slight impression - perhaps pure imagination - that Trump hurt his feelings? But maybe he got re-capitalized by some Trump-hater.

If I see an anti-Trump article I tend not to go back to that site, which lets out Hot Air, Daily Caller, Newsmax, Commentary and of course the proles-should-just-die NRO. (I still go to Powerline, though. I can't resist their week in pictures thing.)

Whatfinger is a bit too National Enquirer-ish for my tastes, and Summit News doesn't update often enough to warrant a daily visit. The new online publication called Issues and Insights seems very good to me, it could be a contender.

And then there's Breitbart. Some really good writers (Delingpole, Kassam, Nolte) but the commenters can never decide who they hate more, Catholics or Jews. I always feel a bit slimed.

  22. Totally true. The content has gone, completely, to crap. I disagree with the statement that it's "quietly" gone anti-Trump, though. It's been pretty loud and clear to me. The only thing that kept me going there is the format. No pop-up adds and it's all right there without a lot of fluff. That is the only nice thing I can say about it. Deleted from my favorites some time ago.

  24. Figured that out months ago. Never visit his site anymore. Good riddance. The Liberty Daily has replaced Drudge for me.

  25. Free Republic is closed-minded reactionary bible-thumpers, if that's your favorite flavor of conservative.

    ReplyDelete
  26. The irony is that I quit going to the Drudgereport when he came out to support Trump instead of Cruz.

  27. And Don, we are now enjoying your daily take on important news stories. What could be better?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Been noticing Drudge's leftward shift for months now. For example, they like to link fake news polls that show Trump losing in an election that's 16 months away ! Been spending less and less time on Drudge and more time on Breitbart, Foxnews.com and Liberty Daily. Maybe drudge will remember where his biscuits get buttered and turn around.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The best thing about whatfinger is that it doesn't refresh 5 times as you're trying to read down. God I hate auto-refresh, just so someone can fraudulently claim more page views than would otherwise be.

  30. Lucianne.com? I stopped reading it back in the primaries, when it seemed to take a pretty nasty anti-Trump turn (and when they started banning users like mad.) Has the site changed since then?

  31. I am very disappointed in Drudge. Complete turncoat and sellout. I hope he's happy with his decision, but it will be at the cost of lost readers and credibility he won't get back. Done with Drudge! On to Liberty Daily!!

    2. Drudge initially appeared to understand the huge amount of support that exists across Middle Class America, but then he went inexplicably downhill in 2017 and never returned to aggregating both moderately liberal and and moderately conservative news articles. This article is correct - Drudge was quite obvious in his sell-out to the hard Left MSM. Must be where the big buck$$ are.

  32. Probably all of you already visit realclearpolitics.com, but just want to be sure that isn't left off the list of worthwhile sites.

It's valuable because it presents a great selection of thought-leader articles from BOTH Right and Left. We can't completely close ourselves off in conservative-only news sites, the way liberals do with liberal news sources. If we don't stay abreast of key liberal thinking, we lose our ability to effectively debate people who are feeding solely on that diet.

We can't let ourselves off the hook-- we have a responsibility to be engaging with the liberals in our circles of acquaintance and consistently building conversational bridges with them and persuading them. We can't abdicate that-- Trump is doing his job, and we have to do our job-- which is engaging and persuading. And to persuade you have to be able to get on their wavelength and find their openings.

That said, Don's blog here is a tremendous comfort for its clarity, truthfulness, and super-solid background knowledge. Here is where I come to hear a spade called a spade. Don is doing a tremendous service to America with this blog.

    1. I see no compelling reason to patronize any website that presents lies and DemocRAT narratives as news, regardless of whether they also include conservative perspectives.

We can get the Leftwing lies on any MSM site that exists, on TV, on radio - everywhere. Why do I need to click a website that includes yet more of the same, under the excuse that they are :"balanced"?

Real "Balance" is provided by conservative-only news sites that devote their energy and webspace to truth and conservative ideals. They offset the overwhelming amount of Leftwing propaganda being spewed by the MSM on a 24/7 basis.

Then, if what you want to do on web site requires cookies and java to be enabled, decide if you want to do that.

If so, enable java and cookies, reload web page, and see what ya get.

Make this a habit and you will be more in control of your web surfing.
