Mediacide over Trump

Matt Taibbi of Rolling Stone, hardly a fan of President Donald John Trump, had good news: Russiagate is the death of American media.

He compared the press carrying of Democrat water in this case to the media's unquestioning belief in government that Saddam Hussein had enough weapons of mass destruction to warrant an invasion in 2003.

That seems an apt comparison. We in the media wanted to believe a war was justified, and so we never questioned what we were told.

Worthless is the man or organization that does not learn from the past.

"The WMD mess had massive real-world negative impact, leading to over a hundred thousand deaths and trillions in lost taxpayer dollars. Unless Russiagate leads to a nuclear conflict, we’re unlikely to ever see that level of consequence," Taibbi wrote.

"Still, Russiagate has led to unprecedented cooperation between the government and Internet platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Google, all of which are censoring pages on the left, right, and in between in the name of preventing the sowing of discord. The story also had a profound impact on the situation in places like Syria, where Russian and American troops have sat across the Euphrates River from one another, two amped-up nuclear powers at a crossroads.

"As a purely journalistic failure, however, WMD was a pimple compared to Russiagate. The sheer scale of the errors and exaggerations this time around dwarfs the last mess. Worse, it’s led to most journalists accepting a radical change in mission. We’ve become sides-choosers, obliterating the concept of the press as an independent institution whose primary role is sorting fact and fiction.

"We had the sense to eventually look inward a little in the WMD affair, which is the only reason we escaped that episode with any audience left. Is the press even capable of that kind of self-awareness now? WMD damaged our reputation. If we don’t turn things around, this story will destroy it."

Taibbi's point is well taken.

They cannot turn things around because not only were they wrong but they were unprecedented in their abuse of power.

It is not the Trump supporters the media must worry about. We wrote them off, and they have written us off. No, it is the diehard liberal core that threatens the media most because that is who their base is now.

The media sought the twentysomething college-educated crowd to replace its old readers and viewers. So be it. Now the media has led the twentysomething college-educated crowd on about impeachment. Their primrose path is a dead end.

Good luck with that.

  1. Truly great analysis. Don at his best

  2. The second Iraq war was undertaken because of Iraq's deliberate violation of the ceasefire, including his forces firing on US aircraft. Dubya had the right to liberate Iraq on that basis alone.

  3. He compared the press carrying of Democrat water in this case to the media's unquestioning belief in government that Saddam Hussein had enough weapons of mass destruction to warrant an invasion in 2003.

More like belief in Willie's old CIA director.

  4. I agree, the biggest most disastrous fallout from the war was that Obama got into power. He lead the failure we currently see in the middle east and rise of communism in the west. The communist left (dem party) used the gulf war they supported as a political weapon against us.

  5. The sad truth is the current generation of reporters were not taught how to distinguish fact from fiction or the times the press was used as a propaganda mouthpiece and the resulting tens of millions of deaths by citizens at the hands of their government.

    1. The current generation is the same as the prior generations. Chris Matthews, Lawrence O’Donnell, Wolf Blitzer etc. have been around a while. They are no different than Maddow or the Maddow look-alike man on MSNBC. Let them wither on the vine.

    2. I doubt that the current batch of so called journalists ever what taught what true journalism entails. Way back when, you were taught that adjectives and adverbs really did not have a place in a news story unless they were absolutely necessary and accurate. Your opinion did not matter unless you were an editor on the opinion page. After Woodward and Bernstein, who I really blame for this mess of brainless wonders, these people think their purpose is to change the world rather than report on it. They want to be celebrities rather than scribes. They are a useless lot who do not know what the job really is. At this point OAN is about the only network where you can get straight news stories without the punditry and constant speculation that seems to be on every other channel including FOX, I am sorry to say.

  6. Most of all, the current generation of reporters were not taught the importance of the rule of law.

They have no idea how quickly a society collapses when the rule of law is ignored for favored groups.

    1. Poopsie, at this point they just don't care because they have an adgenda plus many are in George Soro's employ one way ir another.

  7. I was stunned with the level of honesty in Matt Taibbi's reporting and analysis in that article. Taibbi has now joined Glenn Greenwald as, now, the only two reporters on the left with any integrity whatsoever. No one at CNN, (MS)NBC, ABC/Disney, CBS, the NY Times, or the Amazon Post fall into that category. No one.

(I actually want to be able to read a leftist reporter with integrity every now and then. So far that's been Greenwald and only Greenwald. It's always good to step outside one's own echo chamber.)

    1. About 90% of the time Taibbi takes the Democrat side, but he isn't a "team" player.

He gets in some good quotes from time to time, tho.

I know several reporters who are either officially or unofficially on "Whore Factor" duty, watching the rapidly kaleidoscoping transition picture and keeping track of the number of known whores and ghouls who for some reason have been invited to befoul the atmosphere of the next administration.

Obviously there has been some dire news on that front already. When Obama picked Tom Daschle to be the HHS Secretary, I nearly shit my pants. In Washington there are whores and there are whores, and then there is Tom Daschle. Tom Daschle would suck off a corpse for a cheeseburger. True, he is probably only the second-biggest whore for the health care industry in American politics — the biggest being doctor/cat-torturer Bill Frist, whose visit to South Dakota on behalf of John Thune in 2004 was one of the factors in ending Daschle's tenure in the Senate.

But in picking Daschle — who as an adviser to the K Street law firm Alston and Bird has spent the last four years burning up the sheets with the nation's fattest insurance and pharmaceutical interests — Obama is essentially announcing that he has no intention of seriously reforming the health care industry. . . ."

    2. It is a little heartwarming to discover a lefty with integrity. The late Christopher Hitchens was another such.

Both sides have their Machiavellians. But ideologically, the Right has built-in qualms about scorched-earth tactics, and when they don't, many of their followers still do. Part of right-wing ideology is respect for established institutions, so usually they hesitate before they go too far.

Lefties are unencumbered, generally, by that sort of respect for tradition. Mostly, they respect winning, and that's all.

Such a pleasure to discover lefties who bust that trend.

  8. Sorry, Saddam having WMD was a 'slam dunk'.

  9. Russiagate is not over, it's just beginning, for the democrat b'stards. When is the next special counsel being appointed?
Do not go gentle into these bad knights
Rage Rage Rage by the soldiers of the right
    (apologies to Dylan Thomas)

  10. This is the most spectacular media failure ever. But I don't remember a golden age when the media actually did their job well. They have always carried water for the Deep State. They usually get away with it. You usually have to dig a bit to see how bad the media is. This time you didn't.

  11. The Dems and lying Dem media don't lose the young votes UNTIL there are indictments against the criminals in the Dem deep state.
