In a column in the Washington Post Romney could not argue facts -- “it is not that all of the president’s policies have been misguided” -- so he took the low road.
Never mind the appointments to the judiciary that he made. Never mind that voting for Romney and McCain got me Justices Kagan and Sotomayor, while voting for Trump got me Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh.Must make @MittRomney sick that he the oh so polished guy who worked decades to win the GOP nomination lost twice (primary 2008; general 2012), yet the brash Trump won fully at first try. Romney is bitter: He is 1 of 100; his VP pick has been chased from town and Trump is POTUS! pic.twitter.com/rB70XzKZnq— Yossi Gestetner (@YossiGestetner) January 2, 2019
No, no, no.
The Never Trumper/Never President said President Trump lacks the character to be president. I suppose in Romney's eyes a president must conform to some 18th century aristocratic ideal of governance.
Break out the powdered wigs and breeches, and forget the tax cuts, which included dropping the corporate tax rate from 35% down to 21%.
And forget the new trade agreements with South Korea, Canada and Mexico.
And forget the elimination of thousands of expensive and unnecessary regulations.
And forget de-nuking the Korean peninsula.
And forget that President Trump has accomplished everything conservatives in Washington said they wanted to happen.
No, no, no.
Do not judge President Trump by his actions, Romney wrote.
Judge President Trump by how awful his opponents act, Romney wrote.
“But policies and appointments are only a part of a presidency. To a great degree, a presidency shapes the public character of the nation. A president should unite us and inspire us to follow ‘our better angels.’ A president should demonstrate the essential qualities of honesty and integrity, and elevate the national discourse with comity and mutual respect,” Romney wrote.
Mutual respect. OK, Never Trumpers can start. They were wrong. They can apologize.
If half the country -- including Romney -- refuse to accept the legitimacy of the 2016 election results, how is President Trump responsible? These are temper tantrums by children in their 50s, 60s, and 70s.
Romney is running for president again not because he has a grand vision for America, because if he believed in less government, lower taxes, and putting America first, he would support President Trump's successful efforts to do just that.
No, Romney is only a patsy for corporate interests. He wrote, "I do not intend to comment on every tweet or fault. But I will speak out against significant statements or actions that are divisive, racist, sexist, anti-immigrant, dishonest or destructive to democratic institutions."
Romney left off xenophobic, homophobic and Islamophobic. I am so disappointed. If you are going to drag out Hillary's basket of deplorables, please use the whole thing.
In the heat of the 2012 battle, David Axelrod tweeted, "The Mittzkrieg in Illinois isn't terribly inspiring, so turnout may lag. But the sheer volume probably has been grindingly effective."
That came seven months after Axelrod said on CNN, "Well, first of all, let me say there’s been a coarsening of our political culture. I don’t think that language is appropriate, no matter who uses it. And I think whoever you are in politics, you ought to be willing to say so. I was disappointed that Governor Romney didn’t stand up more forcefully when Rush Limbaugh said what he said."
Now Romney is shucking and jiving to please the Axelrod crowd.
Suddenly, the 2020 Republican nomination process got interesting.
Run, Romney, run. A space on the Trumpenfreude List awaits you.
Mitt's soft, and the enemy smells it.— Kurt Schlichter (@KurtSchlichter) January 2, 2019
UPDATE: "RNC chairwoman slams her uncle Mitt Romney for Trump criticism."Yep. It is one of @realDonaldTrump's many talents https://t.co/QlXrkRKI1L— Don Surber (@donsurber) January 2, 2019
Pass me the popcorn.
Mittens is the Uniparty's latest marionette. The coming primary season should make for great theater.
ReplyDeleteIf Mitt ruins he'll be Jeb !!
ReplyDeleteHe'll raise a bunch of money from the rich guys who own the party but there will be no enthusiasm from the base. The media will make Mitt out to be a contender but he won't win a single Primary or Caucus outside of Utah and he might not win that one either.
After he drops out the media will ask, "Where did Mitt go wrong?" A few months after Trump's 2nd inaugural, Mitt will retire from the Senate. He only took that job to use it as a springboard into running for POTUS,
And he will trash Trump in his resignation/retirement notice.
I disagree with you on only one point. Mittens will stay in the Senate. He will be the replacement to Rino John McInsane.
DeleteMittens will not be the replacement for RINO McCain. McCain was a fighter who fought hard to be the first to backstab his friends and capitulate to his enemies. Mittens is too soft to be the next McCain. Mittens is a pussy ... cat. A pussycat. He's the new Flake.
Delete-TK
I held my nose and voted for Mittens in the vain hope that he could defeat Obama. I won't vote for him again even if by some chance he should be the 2020 Presidential candidate.
ReplyDeleteRomney is the new McCain. Six years of this fool spouting anti-Trump messages awaits us. The media is ecstatic. We are sick to our stomachs. Thank you Utah.
ReplyDeleteRomney’s handlers wrote “A president should unite us and inspire us to follow ‘our better angels.’”. Listen to his speeches. He is trying. It is impossible to do with the media and other democrats in full revolt.
Democrats don't do this to each other, have you noticed?
ReplyDeleteA really good point! No, they don't.
DeleteIt should be noted that Mitt failed to generate any enthusiasm back in 2008 when he lost to John McCain who didn't have any money. He didn't exactly blow away the competition in 2012 either. He just had more money and outlasted the others.
ReplyDeleteThe GOP base was blamed for his loss in 2012 because too many of them stayed home and didn't vote. Why would they turn out for him now?
Always important that winners listen to advice from losers.
ReplyDeleteListen carefully to make sure you don't inadvertently follow it.
DeleteApparently Bezos is building the largest private house in DC history complete with ballroom and 11 or so bedrooms. The purpose is said to be 'social interaction'. Mitt having accepted collar and chain from his new master, will probably spend a lot of time there, perhaps chasing balls to amuse the Emperor on his back forty. But, He will never get to shed on Lincoln's bed now, or ever.
ReplyDeleteRomney reminds me of that English politician in the House of Lords who strenuously objected to Britain building submarines in the pre-WWI years, because "gentlemen don't hide".
ReplyDeleteI read that his first interview in DC will be with CNN.
ReplyDeleteWe get it Mitt, you're the CNN Senator.
JimNorCal
Wasn’t Romneycare frequently cited as the template for Obamacare? He’s a double loser!
ReplyDeleteThat is why the uniparty picked him. By 2012 Barry's colors were showing and even McInsane might have stood a chance.
DeleteWhat's his platform? I'll be less effective, but more polite?
ReplyDeleteAt the guidance of the great political adviser, karl rove , W tried to to "be the better angel and unite us" He tried for 8 years, but, after 7 years of the dems being the dems and the media being the media, W's approval polls went from the high 80's to the low teens. With the dems being the dems and the media being the media having 93% negative articles on President Trump his fighting back keeps his poll numbers steady. Imagine what they would be if we have even half way honest press.
ReplyDeleteFor 8 years mittens could have written the same op piece about obama, for another 8 years he could have written the same thing about clinton. Yet, like justice roberts, he was silent. So tell mittens to STFU!
Why would Romney turn on his compadres? Like W, Clinton and O, he's a citizen of the Globe not the American nation.
DeleteI take it then that the paradigms for conduct in the Oval Office are JFK, who, among other things, lied to the American people about his health; LBJ, who parlayed politics into millions and millions of dollars and a ranch, Nixon about whom I will say nothing, Jimmy Carter, whose sanctimoniousness was exceeded only by his unfitness for the job of President, Bill Clinton to whom the office was a babe magnet, and Barack Obama, whose efforts to turn this country into a tinpot oligarchy have been thwarted by the election of President Trump.
ReplyDeleteRomney believes in a fictional presidency such as that of Josiah Bartlett on The West Wing, Hollywood's effort to show what a Bill Clinton presidency should have been like.
No thanks. I will take the back alley brawler every time since I know he will fight for me and not back down.
Romney is making a fool of himself. Utah voters-- didn't you realize he was on a personal vendetta? He's going to make Utah and Mormons look bad. Mormon church-- rein him in.
ReplyDeleteThe glaring problem with Romney et al, is WHERE IS HIS CRITICISM of the poison going on in the Democratic party!!!!!!!!!! No, he doesn't understand the dangers coming from the left. This blindness is why he was an ineffective Presidential candidate and would have been a poor President.
Might actually happen .I live in Mormon country.Have may LDS friends and some family. most are MAGA.- Like our neighbors. Mitt outside on Utah is seen as a carpetbagger Easterner.
DeleteHe lost it aat the last debate and did not go for it on Benghazi. But he didn't. Trump would've pinned Crowley's ears back and carried Zero's on his belt after that attempt at rigging the debate..
If Mitt has a slow learning curve, he will become no more than another footnote in the DC swamp. Trump is right; get on board.
ReplyDeleteI hope his asshole grows together.
ReplyDeleteWe tried gentlemen for 80 years.
ReplyDeleteDidn't work.
Went with a roughneck.
That worked.
PS A lot of people expect Milton to be the next St John of Hanoi.
Ain't happenin'.
Songbird was a psycho.
When I want a professional clown, I prefer Willard Scott to Willard Romney.
ReplyDeleteWe're never going back, Mitt. You bes get yo mind right.
But Romney is still a Bozo..
DeleteDoug: and, now, definitely a Bezo
DeleteAfter all the talk of draining the swamp what on earth possessed the voters to elect the biggest swamp rat in sewer.
ReplyDeleteFirst Warren, now Romney. The Democratic primary is going to be a cast of thousands.
ReplyDeleteTrump, the sower of discord, will churn the waters taking out most while he's still on the boat.
Ha ha--love it-- "First Warren, now Romney. The Democratic primary is going to be a cast of thousands." Well put!
