The network reported, "President Donald Trump has repeatedly advocated for a steel slat design for his border wall, which he described as 'absolutely critical to border security' in his Oval Office address to the nation Tuesday. But Department of Homeland Security testing of a steel slat prototype proved it could be cut through with a saw, according to a report by DHS.
I seriously doubt Homeland Security said they sawed through the steel.
But government workers could be as dumb as reporters.
The NBC report said, "A photo exclusively obtained by NBC News shows the results of the test after military and Border Patrol personnel were instructed to attempt to destroy the barriers with common tools."
Common tools?
My readers take care of me and one of my favorites called NBC out.

DeleteWorse than just solid steel, those are hollow and filled with concrete. These would be a bitch to cut through. You'd need to torch this a long time as the concrete would suck up the heat. Sawing it won't work well as most blades that cut steel well are dulled quickly cutting into concrete. Chuck a few pieces of rebar in there in the center of the concrete and it would be much more difficult. Make it really exciting by embedding smallish explosives occasionally.

What's funny is no one at the table didn't think it was impossible to cut through anything and this wall was never sold at that so why are the media pretending this is even a counter factual argument? Is it likely someone will try to cut through the fence when its installed, quite probably. Will they be able to do it quickly and efficiently? Doubtful. Just building the damn wall already!
DeleteAs a former auto tech, still in it as a hobby, and a former farmer who did all of his own repairs to equipment, buildings, fences, and more - I know for a fact I could cut through that with the tools in my shop - and a well-charged 18v battery, and a hammer. Or, I could use a PORTABLE torch that can be hauled in a backpack by a person in good physical shape and health.

I know I could get through it.
I have cut bolts out of manifolds without even scarring the cast iron - so no, the concrete wouldn't take the heat out. I can cut one exhaust pipe off the other to replace pipes or mufflers, with a torch and small tip - and not even nick the inner - or outer - pipe, depending on which I am removing.
I can blow a busted bolt out of a 327 Chevrolet exhaust manifold flange and not harm the cast iron or get it so hot that it busts - concentrate the heat and work fast.
My angle grinder with a good battery, and a spare in a backpack, could indeed cut that.
You can even get diamond blades for them now - to cut tile and concrete.
I also do plating in my shop - and cut the zinc with my carbide table saw blades.
I cut steel roofing by turning the blade on my circular saw so it's spinning backwards.
Anyone determined enough without interference will get through. The issue is that they have all the time in the world because we aren't watching those areas well enough. The mules drive up with trucks, cut a while, go back to Mexico, come back the next night and finish the job.
I bet they used a cordless Ryobi angle grinder. :)
ReplyDeleteBut walls are made to slow down attackers so that the defenders can kill them with stones, arrows, or spears through the slats.
And they have multiple times to try because we can't watch every single half mile of border. So they cut a while, go back and get some food, and come back the next night. I KNOW I have the tools in my shop - that would fit into a backpack - and could cut through that with only an hour's time. You can buy diamond blades that will fit an angle grinder with the guard off! Two or three spare batteries - heck, these guys make mega-bucks getting people snuck in here - they sure can spend money on good new tools for their trade. People pay big bucks to these clowns to get them in.
Deleteand I'm a whiz with a torch, I can blow a busted 5/16" bolt out of a cast iron exhaust manifold and not even scar the manifold or get it hot enough to crack it. And the modern torches come in sizes to fit a backpack.
On the other hand, my REAL big torch takes at least two very strong guys to load into my truck....

ReplyDeleteThe neat thing with a fence is that you can monitor it electronically so that if there is any tampering, it alerts to the section being attacked and a drone or other type patrol can be sent to investigate.

Yes, any barrier man made can be defeated the question is how much trouble will it take and how much time. More importantly someone could cut open the wall and drive away with the cutting equipment, leaving a hole for the aliens to go thru.
Oxygen-acetylene cutting torches are VERY common and can be light enough for one person to carry comfortably

By the way, he has a gas powered saw that could whip through that in no time. I have borrowed and used it myself - that fence don't stand a chance against his saw.
All these laments about fake news. Rather like where the drugs are coming from, how they get across the border. As if a wall is going to stop hardly any of that.
