NFL kneeling goes full circle

Get woke, go broke as they say at Instapundit. The NFL has a long way to go until it is broke, but given the number of liberals put in charge of the league, it is but a matter of time. The league took its fan base for granted, tried to expand its appeal, and virtue signaled like a Hollywood award ceremony.

And somehow, the league managed to get Rihanna to join President Donald John Trump's boycott of the NFL.

Ah, enjoy the Trumpenfreude this morning with your coffee.

Our story begins with Colin Kaepernick, a scrambling quarterback who had some initial success but who went the way of all scramblers not named Fran Tarkenton. The league caught on and adjusted.

After leading his team to the Super Bowl, followed by the NFC championship the next season, followed by three seasons of missing the playoffs, he was benched in 2016.

He decided then to start kneeling during the National Anthem.

He said, "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."

Now he is suing the NFL for conspiring not to hire him after he opted out of playing for the 49ers in 2017.

The protests continued as the league courted the Black Lives Matters crowd. The president boycotted the league. The league defied him and supported the protests. And the league's TV ratings went down.

But wait. There's more. Not only has the league ticked off its conservative base who are kneeling instead of standing in line for tickets, but because of the Kaepernick lawsuit, entertainers are boycotting the Super Bowl.

Breitbart News reported today, "Other Bands Refuse to Play with Maroon 5 at Super Bowl Due to Kaepernick Controversy."

Maroon 5 is marooned. What a bunch of maroons.

Oh, and the band has been feuding with President Trump since 2012 when its Adam Levine began badmouthing him with tweets such as, "Donald Trump is one slip into a vat of toxic waste away from becoming an ACTUAL comic book super villain."

This is their official entry to the Trumpenfreude List, but they are barely mentioned.

Which leads us to Rihanna. Esquire reported on October 19, "Rihanna Refused to Play the Super Bowl Halftime Show to Support Colin Kaepernick."

She led others in entertainment to virtue signal as well.

The Guardian reported 10 days later, "Celebrity boycotts and half-time headaches: is the Super Bowl already in crisis?"

Bwa ha ha ha ha.

Never feud with Donald John Trump. Trust me, you will never win.

My books are available here.

  1. > ... but who went the way of all scramblers not named Fran Tarkenton.

You can't be a mere scrambler, but you can still be successful as a scrambler if you have more to offer. Michael Vick and Ben Roethlisberger are/were terrific scramblers. There are/were others. Randall Cunningham comes to mind.

Big Ben scrambles like crazy, only it looks different when he does it. He's so huge and awkward, he looks more like a bear shaking off a pack of wolves. But he is deceptively fast and quick.

    1. Roger Staubach and Steve Young were also both good scramblers, and they went further than Tarkenton did.

    2. Picky, picky, picky, in the words of the late Paul Lynde. The last sentence of the article is where the punch of truth is, not the little throwaway remark about a garden variety benched QB who tried politics to save his career. "You have to hire me!" No, they don't.

  2. Don Surber Sir;

    your reactions on this?

I am admirer of Ayn Rand and I think this author is wrong.

    1. Ayn Rand was an Atheist. Trump is at least on the surface. not one.Yes, think iti s deep than that, but for the sake of argument.
Ayn Rand if alive today would've been on Weakly Standard cruises.
Nice try trollboy. Much better than Nonny throwing his dirty diaper agaist the wall..

    2. You have to accept the premise that President Trump is anti-intellectual and that depends on your definition of "Intellectual".

If your definition is: went to the right school and keeps a thesaurus close at hand so as to be able to use "Big Words" where real words work better, perhaps this makes sense. Perhaps.

But in truth, President Trump's intellect is superior, much like Einstein: more "ordinary" schools, uses the ACTUAL english language, but just HAPPENS to have a superior intellect: in the case of Einstein: Math.

In the case of President Trump - he's simply more intelligent (Hint: root word of 'intellectual') than 99% of
these quasi-intellectuals and so runs rings around them.

    3. Rand probably would have opposed President Trump. She sure hated Reagan, and her support for failure Carter was unwavering. Rand was an Objectivist, and the philosophy is opposed to Christianity. Objectivism teaches that your purpose is your own happiness. The Bible teaches we are created by a Loving and all Wise GOD for his purposes.
Rand was also an abortion activist. She wrote a couple of good books, but wasted her life.

    4. > more "ordinary" schools

He went to Penn, right? Not Penn State, but Penn. That's an ivy league school. And, well, yes, he did major in business. But Penn is a good school.

Anyhow, here's an example of Ms. Rand's scintillating intellect.

She writes: "It is only the concept of ‘Life’ that makes the concept of ‘Value’ possible."

Okay, so 'Value' depends on 'Life.' Got it.

Then she writes, just a little further down the page: "Values are the motivating power of man’s actions and a necessity of his survival, psychologically as well as physically."

So, now she's saying "Life" depends on "Value."

      Which is it?

I've heard of circular reasoning. This goes even further. The circle has a forward gear, and a reverse gear.

Rand is the most tedious read on the planet. You can tell when she doesn't know what she's talking about: she starts to bang on the table, rhetorically speaking. They say when a lawyer has the law on his side, he argues the law; when he has the facts on his side, he argues the fact; and when he has neither the law nor the facts on his side, he bangs on the table. Ayn Rand bangs on the table because it's the only thing she has.

Here's what I mean about banging on the table...

Rand: "To make this point fully clear..."

      Rand: "Epistemologically..."

      Rand: "...genetically dependent upon..."

      Rand: "...let me stress..."

Rand: "So much for the issue of the relation between 'is' and 'ought.'"

Bang! Bang! Bang bang bang! Got it now? Bang!!!!

      Drivel, but written with force.

But I'll give her this: her economics seem fairly solid, and she understood liberals.

    5. > Objectivism teaches that your purpose is your own happiness.

I think that's fair, Jeremy. It's contradictory, but that's Rand's problem, not yours.

She looked down her nose at the "parasites" who don't produce. But what if being parasites is what made them happy?

Rand might answer, nobody can be happy as a parasite. But now she's telling them how they should be living, which runs counter to her basic theme.

  3. My wife and I are The Voice fans and are tickled pink that Adam Levine will be a spectator tonight and tomorrow night. (Like Kapernick.) He made an asshole of himself disrespecting a black male on his team and now everybody hates him. (Cue World’s Tiniest Violin.) Eat poo poo and die, Adam.

  4. The idiocy of their boycot is that the league cannot force a team to sign a player. This is the ultimate team sport and each team requires different skills for their QBs depending on the offense it runs. Kapernick isn’t the answer. He will divide and destroy a team.

Last time a player was forced into the league is when the gay linebacker Michael Sam was taken late in the draft just to satisfy the media and especially espn. He didn’t make it out of pre-season camp.

  5. I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.

I thought black people were the ultimate POC.

Now are the POC going to claim black people are oppressing them?

PS Kaspersky only got woke when he picked up a Moslem girl friend and had to get converted.

  6. By the way, who gives a damn if there is--or is NOT--halftime "entertainment" during a football game?

Play football. Screw the rest of it.

    1. Who gives a damn if there is football? Lots of time wasted watching a couple bands of thugs hit each other. If there was no football, would any of them have two nickels to rub together on Sunday morning?

    2. Hey now, I'd rather watch cheerleaders than Colon Krapperdick any time!

Besides, the only football worth watching is Aussie Rules: no armor, no stopping, intense action!

  7. I found a lot of interesting information here. A really good post, very thankful and hopeful that you will write many more posts like this one.

  8. Some good thoughts here. I will not support the NFL until they convince me that they support the country that pays thier salaries. However maybe a lingerie bowl at halftime.

  9. The NFL's Kaepernick problems started when they hired former Clinton flack Joe Lockhart to run their communications shop. I'd bet a month's pay that Lockhart was the one who advised them to embrace Kaepernick rather than punish him. (The NFL published the statement that Don quotes above on its website.) I don't think it's any coincidence that, earlier this year, Lockhart was quietly let go and the NFL started taking a harder (though not hard enough) line with the sideline kneelers.

    1. Natural Felons League. It's a collection of thugs who sometimes chase balls, but are more often found beating up women.

  11. going the way of the boy scouts.
