Trump is BMW. Obama is GM

"On Nov. 20, the automaker's board of directors approved a massive cost-cutting plan that included shuttering two assembly plants in the United States, one in Canada and two U.S. propulsion plants by the end of next year. Combined with white-collar cuts, about 14,000 hourly and salaried jobs are affected," the Detroit Free Press reported.

"GM waited until Nov. 26 to tell the world its plan."



Obama gave GM a $50 billion bailout and took over the company.

President Trump got to the heart of the problem. He slapped tariffs on Red China and others who won't play fair. He ditched NAFTA in favor of his own trade agreement. It's yuge. Bigly.

Goodbye GM, hello BMW.

"BMW is considering a second U.S. manufacturing plant that could produce engines and transmissions, Chief Executive Harald Krueger said on Tuesday, shortly after a report that U.S. President Donald Trump would impose tariffs on imported cars from next week," CNBC reported.

In a separate story, CNBC reported, "China's import taxes on U.S.-made cars have not hurt demand for BMW's X line of sport utility vehicles that are made in South Carolina, a top executive said Wednesday.

"The ongoing trade war between Beijing and Washington hasn't dampened the appetite for German luxury family cars among China's well-heeled, according to the carmaker."

Obama did accomplish one thing with his takeover of GM. USA Today reported on January 28, 2014, "General Motors CEO Mary Barra plans to attend tonight's State of the Union address as a guest of first lady Michelle Obama — a month after the company shed its government ownership and two weeks after Barra became the first female CEO of a major automaker."

So we have our first woman GM CEO. Obama made history. Next we can have a gay one, or a black one, or a transgendered one, or whatever token you choose.

Meanwhile, BMW is building cars and making money. In America.

  1. Sorry, Big D, but you wouldn’t catch me dead in a krautmobile. Totally agree with the rest of the story, though, and still waiting for the Black Jesus to buy that Volt. Mitt Romney bought a Mustang GT from Da Skool era, like yours. Pity more of the car didn’t rub off on him.

  3. Kind of shocked that you are laughing at GM's woes. Twenty years ago, GM employed 63,000-plus fulltime employees in your home state of Ohio. Now that number is down to less than 10,000.

    So you approve of Trump's tariffs and its effects of GM? You are one strange dude Surber.

    2. Notice how foreign auto manufacturers build plants in Right to Work states? Notice how their workers routinely reject unionization? GM's soon to be shuttered plants are UAW heavy, which is a drag on profitability.

    4. Exactly.... tariffs aren’t causing GM problems... what they sell in China they make in China. No tariffs there. If they are making cars in China to sell here, they should stop. Our goal is not to make China rich off the backs of American companies. Tariffs are bringing in billions of dollars to out coffers that would have gone to China. Good for us.
      BTW.... GM still builds crap cars and has for 45 years.

    5. Why talk about GM employment 20 years ago .... let’s talk about GM just before the financial bust - and just after the bailout.... those sre far more relevant numbers.

      Then we can discuss how much of the bailout money was offshored to China to build plants there instead of being used to build plants here.

  5. Great click-bait post. BMW is "considering" building an engine plant in the U.S. True to your MSM roots Surber, you make sound as if BMW is breaking ground tomorrow. See, you are no different than the press you criticize, just as misleading but only from a differing perspective
