Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez gets one right

"NY taxpayers to pay $48,000 per job at new Amazon headquarters," read the headline.

New York will give the company a $1.5 billion tax exemption.

Democrat congresswoman-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York is opposed.

She said, "Amazon is a billion-dollar company. The idea that it will receive hundreds of millions of dollars in tax breaks at a time when our subway is crumbling and our communities need MORE investment, not less, is extremely concerning to residents here."

I agree. This is a bum deal. Either give all the companies in New York the same cut, or else none.

This is a lousy deal for Main Street because Amazon is tough competition for local retailers. People window shop at Target, then go home and buy online.

New York is going to give Amazon a tax break on top of that.

A few Democrats are outraged.

City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer and state Senator Michael Gianaris, both Democrats, issued a joint communique, which said in part: "Offering massive corporate welfare from scarce public resources to one of the wealthiest corporations in the world at a time of great need in our state is just wrong. We were not elected to serve as Amazon drones."

This is their own doing. The city and the state politicians spend billions on socialist programs -- run by their friends and families for six-figure salaries -- and turn around and tax businesses into the ground.

After all that, the only way left to attract jobs is to give the richest man in the world a tax break.

When it comes to tax breaks, I am like my fifth-grade teacher was about bubblegum. Either you bring enough for everyone in class, or no one gets any.

  1. $1.5B is chicken feed to Jeff Bezos, less than 1% of his fortune. Let him pay the going wage rate without a tax break from the state. What ever happened to the Lefty drive to force companies to pay a livable minimum wage to their employees? If the government has to provide a tax subsidy in order to accomplish that, has Amazon actually met that demand?

    1. then un-invite Amazon to your state, plenty of other states would happily accept them.

    3. Amazon has a presence in every state where it has an unfair advantage as a business must pay taxes or go to jail.

Amazon has easy undersold brick and mortar businesses by not paying taxes and getting away with it because of their lobbyists in Congress paying politicians to turn a blind eye toward making them pay.

They have a dark and evil presence everywhere.

I agree Amazon is a predator. Their market share puts them in prima facie violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act. The Antitrust Division of the DOJ should be prosecuting them (but they aren’t and won’t).

But Comrade Ocasio-Guevara is wrong about this harming the people of NYC. The city has beaucoup tax revenue and giving some of it to Amazon to attract these jobs is an unmixed benefit to the place. I hope that idiots like Ocasio scare off Amazon and they go to their Plan B, which hopefully is in my neighborhood (or yours) for the sake of our property values.

      Fucking property values?

You fly by night real estate hustlers are quite the feckless.

    2. Everyone owning property with an idea of selling it for a profit at a later date are not necessarily hustlers, some inherit wealth, some work to earn wealth, some steal from others.

  3. How much is NY epecting to receive as far as sales tax revenues from AMZN sales are concerned? Will they make up that $1.5B in the first year plus multiples in following years???

    1. As far as sales tax the same question can be asked of any state that was trying to land them and the answer is No. NY gets the sales tax from in-state orders whether Amazon is located there or not.

    2. I think he means from the employees working there, assuming they are net additions to working payroll and purchasers in state.

  4. I haven't seen whether Amazon used the competing offers to negotiate with NY and VA or if it was just a matter of them accepting a sealed bid type situation. If they used the other proposals to negotiate I'd ask all these mainly Democrat politicians how it felt to be used because my guess is that Amazon had a good idea where they wanted to locate from the get go.

  5. Big business likes big government. The new congresscritter will end up doing whatever Bezos asks her to, and he knows it. Her objections are all for show for her constituents.

    1. Many local politicians in NY have made these same speeches before, only years ago. Walmart was the target then and the were successful in keeping out a single store. Lil' Eva has no chance against the Emperor but fighting him will keep her in office will she turns gray if she wants. What is of more interest to me is his move into Virginia. He could easily push the state blue with his employees and their families, many perhaps from Maryland, and with Democrat political donations. That and owning WaPo would make him a bigger player than he is now. He is on the move, but not back to Planet Mongo.

  6. The idea of opportunity zones is popular with New York politicians. Buffalo and Rochester, New York also bite at Amazon's scam. Sadly Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a day late and a dollar short. Where was she when politicians across the state were bidding for HQ2?

Then AOC has the wrong target. It is not Amazon's fault that greedy local politicians made Amazon an offer too good to pass up on.

  7. Not so fast... the linked parent article says Long Island will add about 25,000 jobs. The employees will pay taxes, some may leave welfare and food stamp rolls, they will shop in their communities which leads to jobs and more taxes. They'll eat at restaurants, go to movies, buy gasoline, and etc. The tax break is not all losses as suggested by that economic braintrust Ocasio-Cortez.

  9. Dear Governor Cuomo:

I am considering relocating to your state. What kind of tax breaks and other incentives are you offering?

  11. Locating in NYC -- the highest cost of living metro area in the country -- and DC (which isn't far behind) makes no business sense. Has anyone ever seen the traffic on the Van Wyck Distressway to JFK Airport? NoVA is no better. Plainly, this was a political/power decision. You KNEW there was no way he would locate in a red state like Indiana, which would actually make economic sense.

Pay attention to toy availability this year. With Toys R Us out, there is no one that has the money to invest in inventory to make up their assortment. They warned toy makers years ago that partnering with Amazon long term would diminish their sales because there will be few stores left to "go and check out" items. We are seeing they were correct.

How cute of you Don to go all Socialist on Amazon. Well, you are a life-long Democrat.

Funny (again), you cheer Scott Walker's $3 billion tax giveaway to a Taiwanese for 13,000 jobs but deride Amazon's $1.5 billion giveaway for 50,000 jobs.

    1. Foxconn brings a $10.5 billion in new payroll to the state

Amazon brings 50,000 high-paying jobs split 50/50 NY vs VA means 25,000 jobs for NY and I can't find any estimated payroll figures... on the surface $1.5 billion giveaway for 25,000 jobs appears to be 1/4 the cost of the Foxconn deal

I'm only looking at the # of jobs here, tax deals might tell a completely different story.

  15. Chica dimple cheeks has been quoted as being all for student loan forgiveness, as in, null out all student loan balances.

She, in her awesome, youthful wisdom, has presumed that the taxpayers would be, of course, financing this windfall debt relief

    A much better idea, Chica:

    1. Student loan balances rendered to null, zero.

    2. Lender eats 50% of principle owed, thus rendered as loss, plus laments no longer to be received monthly juice.

    3. College recipients of said loaned principle eat the other 50% of total loaned principle, via colleges pay to lenders said 50% of total loan balance amount, thus covering loan balance in total.

    NO taxpayer funds required.

Lender eats half and recipient, aka, college, eats remaining half.

Granted, democrat grafters will find both lenders and colleges displeased at having to sacrifice after paying out so much in bribes, uh, make that democrat party contributions, but, hey, hillary fucked them deeply and it is their problem if they haven't gotten to like that.

    C'mon, Chica Paprika!!!!

    You can do it!!!!

    You can be the change!!!!!

You, and your cutie pie dimpled cheeks can motivate all them crusty ancient democrat dinosores to Be The Change!!!!!

It settles two important things. 1) puts student loan lenders out of business and 2) sheds a lot of dead weight at universities in the way of _______ study departments. Tuition will have to come down to reasonable levels and if that is the case, who needs a loan when tuition is reasonable again. Brilliant!
