How President Trump plays the New York Times

The Daily Gotham opposed Batman, running front-page editorials such as "Batman: Savior or Menace?" and "Batman: More Harm than Good."

Which brings me to A.G. Sulzberger the XIV's visit to the White House. He is the publisher of the New York Times.

"Had a very good and interesting meeting at the White House with A.G. Sulzberger, Publisher of the New York Times. Spent much time talking about the vast amounts of Fake News being put out by the media and how that Fake News has morphed into phrase, 'Enemy of the People.' Sad!" President Trump tweeted.

How dare he criticize the press.

I can hear the media minions bleat "First Amendment! First Amendment!" like Gomer Pyle yelling, "Citizen's Arrest" at Barney Fife.

After Trump's tweet, Sulzberger told the Associated Press, "I told the president directly that I thought that his language was not just divisive but increasingly dangerous."

If criticism is dangerous, then the New York Times and the rest put President Trump's life in jeopardy daily.

"I warned that it was putting lives at risk, that it was undermining the democratic ideals of our nation, and that it was eroding one of our country’s greatest exports: a commitment to free speech and a free press," Sulzberger said.

Notice the difference.

President Trump gave examples of Fake News while Sulzberger was hysterical.

After the meeting, President Trump tweeted, "When the media -- driven insane by their Trump Derangement Syndrome -- reveals internal deliberations of our government, it  truly puts the lives of many, not just journalists, at risk! Very unpatriotic!

"Freedom of the press also comes with a responsibility to report the news accurately. 90% of media coverage of my Administration is negative, despite the tremendously positive results we are achieving, it’s no surprise that confidence in the media is at an all time low!

"I will not allow our great country to be sold out by anti-Trump haters in the dying newspaper industry. No matter how much they try to distract and cover it up, our country is making great progress under my leadership and I will never stop fighting for the American people!

"As an example, the failing New York Times and the Amazon Washington Post do nothing but write bad stories even on very positive achievements - and they will never change!"

President Trump went public with the meeting because it made him look good. Sulzberger was a sucker for his trap. He is too young and inexperienced, a boy monarch schooled by the nation's top expert on journalism.

The Associated Press was dismissive about the president's call for accuracy in reporting the news. The irony is the Associated Press failed to check out his complaint that reporters don't double check stories.

"But the president — who, like all politicians, is concerned about his image — also regularly derides the newspaper as the 'failing New York Times.' However, the Times’ ownership company in May reported a 3.8 percent increase in first-quarter revenue compared to the same period in 2017," the Associated Press reported.

The newspaper is doing so that it repeatedly lays off editors and reporters. There is of course a difference between the newspaper and NYT Inc.

Buried in the Associated Press report on this feud was this: "Trump reads the Times and gives interviews to its reporters."

In fact, President Trump is the most accessible president the press has had in a long while. That is because he knows how to use the press. He is the best PR man in the nation, which is a large part of the reason he rose from being a millionaire to becoming a billionaire.

His first major project was the conversion of the Commodore Hotel into the Grand Hyatt.

In his book, "Donald J. Trump: A President Like No Other," Conrad Black described how The Donald acquired financing without the tax abatements and the tax abatements without the title and the title without the financing.

The press was never able to tie him down. Instead it did his bidding. He was a new star, a shiny bauble, and before his 40th birthday, a world-renowned figure.

He learned early that the press is more concerned about the sizzle than the steak, and it served him well in his election -- and serves him well in his presidency.

Using Twitter, he sends the press off scent. He now enjoys a press so discredited that he could indeed mow people down on Fifth Avenue and no one would care. The press watchdog has barked itself hoarse following phony tales, and overstating his mistakes.

The press plays the Joker, Riddler, and Penguin to his Batman. They have played themselves into the villains in the story, and President Trump the hero.

His supporters now are more annealed to him than on Election Day.

CBS News reported, "Trump backers stand by president in face of Russia criticism — CBS poll."

This is the pattern. The press makes a big deal out of something either fake or insignificant and nothing comes of it, so the press makes a big deal out of something else either fake or insignificant and nothing comes of it, so the press makes a big deal out of something else either fake or insignificant and nothing comes of it, so the press makes a big deal out of something else either fake or insignificant and nothing comes of it, so the press makes a big deal out of something else either fake or insignificant and nothing comes of it, so the press makes a big deal out of something else either fake or insignificant and nothing comes of it, and so on and so forth.

This gives President Trump the aura of strength and invulnerability.

Which is attractive to people.

Which got him elected.

And which may get him re-elected.

  1. Sulzberger talking like a big man on how he lectured the president. Most likely, PDJT told him that his former attorney Cohen has tapes of his star reporters taking about how they plan on destroying the president in print.

  2. As NYC loses the cultural appeal it once had so does the NYT. NYC is now a place of crazy, debauchery and greed. It is being rejected and no longer "superior" as they like to view themselves. They are also going broke and wealth is leaving on an accelerating schedule. It is increasingly a city of the poor (which includes most millenials) and a few ultra-weathy and people like Punch like it that way. The implosion of the NY Daily News should scare them but it somehow doesn't. They just want to continue along as the unquestioned and unaccountable elite and are confused as to why they aren't.

    1. Not just papers..CBS radio his going bonkers today comparing Trump's 'enemy of the people'' quote Joseph Stalin. Over the top SeeBS on the run and running scared.

  3. The media feel they are part of the elite crowd and therefore "Too big to fail".
They fail everyday to fact check stories, comments and even analysis and expect the peons to believe because they said so. Americans aren't stupid and won't be bullied by the elitist media, so the media losses credibility and the people question their honesty and integrity and find it lacking as well.
print media has been dying for decades and will continue the spiral into insignificance. The TV and web news will follow due to lack of credibility and eventually lack of funding.

  4. So easy to correct. So few correcting.

  5. Sulzberger is worried about people attacking his reporters physically. He attributes our hatred of him and his drones to Trump, but I think he knows the truth, that our hatred is borne of decades of lying by newspapers, of decades of newspapers blackmailing politicians into either action or silence. All in the service of the Democrat party, socialism, or communism.

He knows what Duterte said about the press and is afraid of it being said here.

Chances are it won't need to be said here because the press is listened to less and less. It's influence is dying. This is a protective effect. The press should actually be thankful that they aren't listened to any more.

    1. This comment has been removed by the author.

    2. It's almost amusing how Sulzberger imitates Germany of the awful era in believing his own made-up stories. New Yorkers - especially they of the press - are so insulated in their little world that the real world just doesn't penetrate. Everyone they know thinks as they do so even imagining thinking differently just doesn't happen.

I remember thinking, when Arthur Ox (Ochs) gave up the NYT helm to his little boy, that maybe some sense would evidence itself in the paper of record. Instead we see that it's retreated to being the diary of record of a gaggle of teenage girls, giggling and squealing self-importantly while committing their sex-addled mental meanderings to paper and expecting everyone else to ooh and aah. It hurts their feelings when mean old Trump calls them out. He's not supposed to do that.

America is very much in danger of returning to the people who matter in a democratic republic - the voters. All these spoiled rich brats can still enjoy their wealth and privilege, but their power is seriously damaged as the world sees them for what they are.

      Thank you, Donald Trump.

  6. Pinch (or Paunch or whatever they call him) is running the company into the ground. If he produced a decent, credible product, he might not have to.

His supporters now are more annealed to him than on Election Day.

Funny what keeping your promises can do.

    1. I believe Pinch is this guy's older bro. Daddy was Punch.

    2. Pinch is this guy's daddy. Grampa was Punch.

    3. Gotta Ask: Which one's Judy?

  7. Arthur's father gave GW the figurative finger in the Oval, to him personally and his office generally, when GW implored him not to print the fact that the NSA was monitoring SWIFT money transfer by terrorists after 9/11. There was no real reason to print it, just the act of a child pouring milk on the floor from his hereditary high chair. How many people suffered as a result no one knows but years later daddy regretted his pique. A one liner to say so was inserted on page 96.
Trump basically returned the father's salute to Lil' Scion but without any acknowledgement of distress on his part. He is unafraid not only because he is guiltless but because he grew up with his tormentors and knows all their foibles, their secret nicknames and how they got them.
Unfortunately the NYT is still important in the media world. The majority of the 'press' are lazy and ill informed. What the Times says is taken as gospel because of past reputation, its internet ubiquity, and its willingness to publish almost anything damaging to the Right. The "almost" is what give it some credibility and perhaps is why Trump spoke to them. He didn't waste his time with WaPo which under Bezos has become a personal Ministry of Truth to manipulate the DC establishment, because in it resides the power to effect monopoly.
In Orwell's 1984, a book every liberal likes to reference but it seems few have read or understood, the hero Winston Smith thought that if there was any hope to eventually break the oppressive power of relentless lies put out by the Party rulers, it resided in the largest social class, called Proles, what today Orwell might have called the deplorables. They operated only on common sense and the reality of the world they knew. Propaganda had little effect on them. Instead the goal to control them rested on removing their ability to think in words, a topic for another thread. In this, our real world, what Trump does is still more important to his supporters than the putative crimes he meant to commit as editorialized by the NYT and its sycopahants like the AP. As long as this is true he will remain in power doing good for them and even his enemies although they would rather choke to death than admit it. And someday I hope they do.

  8. Trust baby publisher trying to flex his muscle and Poof ~ he falls flat.

  9. I thought it was "Spider-Man: Threat or Menace?"

    -Mikey NTH

  10. “I can hear the media minions bleat "First Amendment! First Amendment!" like Gomer Pyle yelling, "Citizen's Arrest" at Barney Fife.”

They remind me more of the sheep in Animal Farm.

  11. “His supporters now are more annealed to him than on Election Day.”

For ever annealing Trumper, there’s an ablating Walkaway.

  12. The Times has lied about racist violence against whites for 60 years. Covered it up, downplayed it, and in doing so helped enable the racist mass murder of thousands, including children. This is their dirtiest little crime. If you think this is too much try to imagine the reaction of the Times to crimes on a similar scale against Jews or blacks. They would go insane, they would conduct a campaign of stories day after day after day with the accurate belief that doing so would bring such crimes to an end or near end. They decline to do so when whites are the victims. It amounts to active support for racist murder and rape, or at the very least a depraved, criminal indifference to the victims, based solely on the racial dynamics of th crimes, for some "greater" social/political goal. White-hating racism is now the chief identifying characteristic of the modern political left, and we don't have a free press until that subject is freely aired in it.
