The Lilliputians of the G7 -- May and Merkel -- tried to tie the American Gulliver down with their communique on climate change, gender equality, and other marvels of Western socialism.
President Trump blew them off. They failed to convince him the sky was falling, but the press portrayed him as unstatesmanlike.
(What about Trudeau? He put the dip in diplomacy. Tough to say which was the biggest failure at the summit, him or his Fake Eyebrows.)
Meanwhile, two of those great diplomats -- May and Merkel -- have been unable to reach an agreement on Great Britain's departure from the European Union after two years of talk.
The G7 Summit was like getting marriage counseling from a couple in the middle of a botched divorce.
Alastair Jamieson of NBC News reported, "Brexit is even messier than critics expected. So what happens now? With only months to go until Britain leaves the European Union, Prime Minister Theresa May faces a showdown with critics in parliament on Tuesday."
Britons joined the confederacy of European states with the understanding that it could leave.
No one thought anyone would leave. No one knows how to do this.
"It has been almost two years since Britain voted unexpectedly, and by a narrow margin, to quit the 28-nation bloc. Yet with 292 days to go as of Sunday until its membership ends, nothing has been agreed on in terms of what future relations between the U.K. and Europe will look like," Jamieson reported.
The report was light on EU's unwillingness to seek a cordial cutting of the cord.
And of course, Merkel must deal with an invasion of Muslim refugees that has led to murder and mayhem in a country that enjoyed a low crime rate for most of my lifetime.
This explains why they were so willing to make outrageous demands of America. President Trump provided a nice distraction from their failures as prime minister and as chancellor, respectively.
