Why Trump rocked the CPAC

The Breitbart headline said, "Donald Trump Rocks CPAC: ‘We’ve Got Seven Years to Go, Folks!’"

What a difference two years makes. A straw poll at the 2016 showed he was the first choice of only 15% of CPAC conservatives, even though he was in the 40s among conservatives overall. Trump was a last-minute no show.

Success breeds content.

His actions have spoken louder than words.

This is not the first time he rocked CPAC. In 2011, he wowed them.

But with Bill Kristol and the rest of the Never Trumpers attacking him in 2016, some questioned his conservatism.

As president, he has been more conservative than anyone named Bush. His Supreme Court nominee was not a Harriet Miers or a David Souter.

I listened to part of the speech on the radio. (Yes, I had the top down.) The crowd sounded raucous and rowdy. In other words, typically CPAC.

Time magazine transcribed his talk. Occasionally, he actually read the speech. His extemporaneous moments were the best.
TRUMP: So, I’ve been with CPAC for a long time. All of these years we’ve been together. And now you finally have a president, finally. Took you a long time.
(APPLAUSE)
Took you a long time.
(APPLAUSE)
And it’s patriots like you that made it happen, believe me. Believe me. You did it because you love your country, because you want a better future for your children and because you want to make America great again.
(APPLAUSE)
The media didn’t think we would win. The…

(LAUGHER)
TRUMP: … pundits — you’re right. They had an idea. The pundits didn’t think we’d win. The consultants that suck up all that money — oh, they suck it up. They’re so good.
(LAUGHTER)
They’re not good at politics, but they’re really good at sucking up people’s money. Especially my opponents, because I kept them down to a minimum.
But the consultants didn’t think we would win.
But they all underestimated the power of the people: You. And the people proved them…
(APPLAUSE)
… totally wrong. Never — and — and this is so true. And this is what’s been happening. Never underestimate the people. Never.
(APPLAUSE)
I don’t think it’ll ever happen again.
He is absolutely correct.

Trump's victory over entrenched interests, the media, a seasoned opponent with twice as much money, and a personal popularity usually associated with the New England Patriots, Trump prevailed.
Fact check: TRUE. Reagan departed office five years before the lad was born.

Trump has cut regulations, cut taxes, promoted capitalism, and appointed 24 appellate judges (out of 179) -- a record for being in offices less than 13 months.

In eight years, Obama appointed 55; only two in his last two years in office, as Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell hoarded those vacancies for the next president to fill.

As president, Trump also has taken on the media for its dishonest reporting and outright propaganda.
TRUMP: So just to conclude, I mean, it’s a very sensitive topic and they get upset when we expose their false stories. They say that we can’t criticize their dishonest coverage because of the First Amendment, you know, they always bring up the First Amendment.
(LAUGHTER)
And I love the First Amendment; nobody loves it better than me. Nobody.
(APPLAUSE)
I mean, who use its more than I do? But the First Amendment gives all of us — it gives it to me, it gives it to you, it gives it to all Americans, the right to speak our minds freely. It gives you the right and me the right to criticize fake news and criticize it strongly.
(APPLAUSE)
And many of these groups are part the large media corporations that have their own agenda and it’s not your agenda and it’s not the country’s agenda, it’s their own agenda. They have a professional obligation as members of the press to report honestly. But as you saw throughout the entire campaign, and even now, the fake news doesn’t tell the truth. Doesn’t tell the truth.
So just in finishing, I say it doesn’t represent the people, it doesn’t tell the never will represent the people, and we’re going to do something about it because we have to go out and have to speak our minds and we have to be honest. Our victory was a win like nobody has ever seen before.
(APPLAUSE)
I’m here fighting for you and I will continue to fight for you. The victory and the win were something that really was dedicated to a country and people that believe in freedom, security and the rule of law. Our victory…
(APPLAUSE)
… was a victory and the win for conservative values.
This was all off-the-cuff. He read the audience and adapted.

"The speech quickly turned into a dynamic rally-style speech as Trump drew energy from the audience. Catching sight of the video screen in the room, Trump joked about his hair," Breitbart reported.

He said, "I try like hell to hide that bald spot, folks, I work hard at it,” he said. “It doesn’t look bad, hey we’re hanging in!"

Trump rocked the CPAC not because he gives good speeches (he does) and not because he takes on the sacred cows of the left (he does) but because he kept his promises.
One by one, we’re checking off the promises we made to the people of the United States. One by one, a lot of promises. And we will not stop until the job is done. We will reduce your taxes, we will cut your regulations, we will support our police, we will defend our flag.
(APPLAUSE)
We will rebuild our military. We will take care of our great, great veterans. We’re taking care of our veterans.
(APPLAUSE)
We will fix our broken and embarrassing trade deals that are no good. None of them. You wonder where did the people come from that negotiated these deals. Where did they come from? Well, they came also from campaign contributions, I must be honest. They’re not as stupid as you think.
(LAUGHTER)
We will cut wasteful spending. We will promote our values. We will rebuild our inner cities. We will bring back our jobs and our dreams. So true. So true.
(APPLAUSE)
And by the way, we will protect our Second Amendment.
That is why conservatives love President Trump. He keeps his promises. His word is his bond.

That's because he is a businessman, not a politician. You don't go from being a millionaire to being a billionaire without delivering the goods.

From Leslie Eastman's review at Legal Insurrection:
Surber, a recovering journalist with over 30 years of experience, has been cataloging the #FakeNews that has been regularly offered as serious analysis of President Donald Trump’s actions, policies, and opinions. He has brought his enormous collection together in the longest, most serious book he has yet written: Fake News Follies of 2017.
Fake News Follies of 2017 is available on Kindle and in paperback.

Autographed copies are available. Email me at DonSurber@GMail.com for details. I am including a "director's cut." I will give you the original Chapter 1 that I cut because while the chapter was amusing, it really had nothing to do with the Fake News Follies of 2017.

  2. When I was young Reagan was the best thing that had happened politically in my lifetime. This is better.

    1. When the Iranian Revolution took our embassy hostages I was a paratrooper. I laid on a runway in a parachute with a full combat load at midnight while the planes warmed up their engines. Then Peanut Carter ordered a stand down. Bummer.

Then Reagan was elected and it was like a whole new world opened up. Terrific! Things took a big turn for the better. But Reagan was unable to achieve as much as he wished.

President Trump is already WAY better than President Reagan, and he's just warming up. I am unable to keep from being optimistic and downright enthusiatic.

God Bless President Trump and the U.S.A.

      MAGA!

  3. Trump’s greatest achievement over eight years will be if he can bring the rising generation along with him. If he can Make American Youth Great Again.

Some are already level-headed. There’s always been sensible young people in every generation. They will be the NCOs around which Trump will bring in new recruits to form a great conservative force that will take back all the Institutions.

And not by some gradual and insidious Long March in the manner of the Left. Not Trump’s style. Like Patton before him, he’s a buzzsaw-through-balsa kind of guy.

Youth like winning, despite all the participation crap they’ve been fed

  4. How conservative is CPAC when Marco Rubio and John Kasich could've gotten about 40 percent of the vote between them? I like Little Marco, but he's not a conservative. And while John Kasich 2016 was well to the right of bitter John Kasich 2018, I mean, come on, John Kasich.

    1. Completely agree! Kasich like McCain, Kristol, Graham, the Bushes, etc. Are so past there sell-by date they are dangerous. Wish they would realize this and just go away, and Shame on CPAC for inviting any of them or any like them. They are a cancer to the party, and some I believe are secret agents for the DNC

    2. Given what was done to Pamela Geller, CPAC isn't conservative. They excluded Gateway Pundit, then Pamela Geller refused to stage the committee discussion and cancelled it. CPAC then staged it anyway, claiming Geller was simply invited to be a part of it. In short, they lied through their teeth and then stole her idea.

Conservative? Not anymore. But, this was baked into the cake with Grover Norquist's intent to shut down anything dealing with jihad in a negative way.

  5. OT, but let me say thank you to Mr Trump for a fine and generous gesture.

He has announced in conjunction with our PM Turnbull that the next Austal-built littoral combat ship will be named USS Canberra, after our heavy cruiser sunk off Guadalcanal in support of the USMC.

The littoral combat ship program has many issues between the Lockheed Martin series and the Aussie Austal series, but it's nice that one of our companies has been able to contribute to the USN. Long may USS Canberra sail.

  7. Security that morning was ridiculous - an hour to get back to my room after a 7 AM smoke? - so my friend and I watched it on Fox. Nothin like Mr. T and some Glenlivet! Except for a little stretch in the middle, that was just him riffin on whatever thing came into his mind. Keith Richards got NUTHIN on Mr. T. Brilliant speech.
