Christmas sales up 5.8%

CBS reported that Christmas sales reached $598 billion this year, up $33 billion over last year, for a 5.8% gain.

That is the biggest gain in Christmas sales in a dozen years.

Last year, sales were up 3.6% after a 3.2% gain in 2015. The last time we had a gain larger than 5.8% was in 2005 when sales jumped by 6.2%. The chart.

From CBS:
Total retail sales this holiday season added up to a record $598 billion dollars — up $33 billion from last year.
"This is literally the best season since before the recession," business owner Craig Johnson said.
Johnson's company, Customer Growth Partners, analyzes all things retail. He credits low unemployment and a booming stock market for this humbug-free holiday season.
"The single biggest drive of retail sales is growth in real disposable income," he said. "And when real income goes up, people have money in their pocket and they're able to spend it."
Online sales are also way up, which explains why UPS had to call in support from their accountants and office staff to supplement drivers trying to deliver everything on time.
"FedEx, UPS and the Postal Service have all been record volumes," Johnson said.
Our mail carrier from the U.S. Postal Service delivered a package on Sunday. I love the post office, by the way. The people at the Poca Post Office are friendly, my carrier waves to me, and the rates are great for mailing books.

But I digress.

This year's Christmas sales may reflect a good economy this year -- or the season may be a harbinger of even better economic news next year.

Judging by stock prices and the big drop in the corporate income tax rate, I would say the latter is true.

We shall see.

Please enjoy my two books about the press and how it missed the rise of Donald Trump.

The first was "Trump the Press," which covered his nomination.

The second was "Trump the Establishment," which covered his election.

  1. Come on, Don; we all know the sales increases were because Trump hisownself bought up lots of stuff, cuz we pore-as-churchmice folks ain't got not even a penny and a slug to rub together.
I know it's true, cuz I seen it in the NYT.

  2. I didn't see the word "unexpectedly" in the article. - GOC
