Victory in Syria

There will be no parades. No celebrations in Times Square. Not even much acknowledgement in the funny papers.

But 400 Marines are returning from Syria early, having helped vanquish the Islamic State. God bless every one.

From Fox News:
The U.S. military operation in Syria and Iraq says it is sending home more the 400 Marines and their artillery from Syria, after they accomplished their mission against the Islamic State group.
The press unit for Operation Inherent Resolve says the 1st Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment was supporting local partner forces with artillery firepower to defeat Islamic State militants in their former capital city, Raqqa.
The city fell to a mix of Kurdish, Arab and other local forces on Oct. 20 after a 4-month assault that was backed by U.S. and international coalition air power and artillery.
We supplied the air power and artillery.

The Arabs -- Iraqis, Syrians, and the Gulf Cooperation Council -- provided the foot soldiers.

This was an urban war.

That's how it should be. We may by default be the world's policeman, but it is good to see the neighborhood watch take over.

From BBC:
BBC defence correspondent Jonathan Marcus says the Marine artillery battery was the most significant combat element deployed by the Americans on the ground, bolstering the impact of US and coalition air power.
With IS as a territorial entity largely defeated there is no longer any need for the battery, our correspondent adds. Thus its departure marks the end of a significant phase in the battle against IS.
We just acknowledged our 16th anniversary of 9/11.

On March 9, when these 400 Marines when in, NPR's Phil Ewing reported, "The military is trying to copy as much as it can from the playbook it's using in Iraq, where American troops aren't supposed to be in direct combat, but instead help local forces with indirect fire, air strikes, training and weapons."

It worked.

Please enjoy my two books about the press and how it missed the rise of Donald Trump.

The first was "Trump the Press," which covered his nomination.

The second was "Trump the Establishment," which covered his election.

  1. Amazing that military strategist Obama the Great didn’t think of this.

  2. We were using M777 155mm artillery pieces. They are wicked bad. Check out some of the videos on YouTube. In the battle for Raqqa they fired so many rounds that they burned out two barrels. That must have been awesome! Like General Curtis Lemay said, "If you kill enough of them they stop fighting." - Elric

    1. Well, shrapnel is the real killer. Most folks don't understand that. Chrome lined bores for that M777 means a lot of shrapnel. GPS means one round or two....right on top of the bad guys. That's what that Excalibur shell is all about. Here's the point.... proximity fused airborne shrapnel nowadays ain't something you live through....nope, maybe your buddies see what happened to you.....here's another thought.....urban fighting means civilian dead and wounded. Trump understands that.

The German soldiers were most afraid of American artillery. That's what killed. Nowadays it's much more deadly....if the will is there to actually kill people.

    2. Forgot to mention why the chrome bores are so important. Essentially, artillery fire is corrosive to the rifling and actual breech of the weapon. Apparently, those weapons were being fired way past hot.....iirc, there was only TWO.

  3. All it took was a U.S. president with the will. Obama did not want to defeat ISIS in Syria; he and Hillary wanted to foster and support them and their Muslim Brotherhood kin.

Obama and Hillary succeeded in Libya in creating a failed state which ISIS can use as a base of operations. They failed in Egypt where they installed Muslim Brotherhood tool Morsi who was overthrown by Field Marshal al-Sisi as part of a crackdown on the MB.

Trump’s defeat of ISIS in Syria, plus the pre-Trump stabilization of Egypt as two good reasons why the entire world should give thanks to Trump every day that Hillary is not president.

  4. "The U.S. military operation in Syria and Iraq says it is sending home more the 400 Marines and their artillery"

The Wives and Significant Others of those Marines no doubt applaud that decision by the U.S. Military operation.

  6. In the immortal words of George Smiyhj Patton, Jr, "I don't have to tell you who won the war. You know who won the war. Our artillery won the war". Ever since Sam Ringgold in 1846.

Semper Fi, to be sure, but also Rangers Lead The Way.

  7. Good note, great news.

However, you should note Kurds are not Arabs, and the Kurds also provided foot soldiers, not just "The Arabs -- Iraqis, Syrians, and the Gulf Cooperation Council -- provided the foot soldiers."

My biggest critique of Trump foreign policy is his current unwillingness to support (socialist? semi-socialist?) independent Kurdistan. As I understand it, mostly because of Turkey.

I don't believe Turkey today is a real ally of the US, or Western Human Rights values.

But Trump using force in Syria, to WIN, is great.
