Eight years of charming incompetence by Barack Obama fundamentally transformed the Democratic Party into an atrophied, sclerotic shell. The party is its smallest since 1929 as measured by governorships.
Failure has consequences.
Had they judged Obama by the content of his character instead of the color of his skin, Democrats may have been spared the Walk of Shame they must begin.
The party has no leadership.
Two articles make the Democratic Party's pain delightfully clear.
From the New York Times:
A Post-Obama Democratic Party in Search of Itself
The 44th president left office as one of the most popular in American history. He also left behind a party struggling to find an identity — and to reconnect with voters in time for the 2018 elections. In his article, Robert Draper wrote that the day after the Democratic Party lost Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin for the first time since the 1980s, Democratic Party leaders tried to spin it as a minor setback.
“It reminded me of that scene at the end of ‘Animal House,’ where Kevin Bacon is standing in the middle of all this chaos, screaming: ‘Remain calm! All is well!’ ” Scott Peters, a congressman from California who was on the call, told me. “After telling us before that we were going to pick up 20 seats, and we end up with six, underlaid with Clinton losing, I had no use for that kind of happy talk.”
During and after Pelosi’s monologue, Democratic representatives who were listening texted and called one another incredulously, but Peters was one of the few who spoke up on the line. “I think we’re missing something,” he told Pelosi. “We’re just not hearing what’s on people’s minds.”
The discontent was palpable enough that two days after the conference call, Pelosi announced that leadership elections would be taking place less than a week later — leaving little time for a revolt to build, which some members I spoke to suspected was the point.
By that time, one of Pelosi’s House allies, Doris Matsui of California, had already sent out an email to all the women in the Democratic House caucus, urging them to sign on to a letter of support for Pelosi as leader. Three second-term Democrats — Seth Moulton of Massachusetts, Kathleen Rice of New York and Ruben Gallego of Arizona — wrote to Pelosi, urging her to delay the elections.
Rice would later tell her colleagues in a closed-door meeting, according to notes that were taken by a participant: “Look, I know from losing the state attorney general race in 2010: Losing sucks. But you have to get up the next day and take responsibility for it, take a hard look at every decision your team made, figure out what went wrong and learn from it.”The party is in trouble. One generation hangs on to power. Another generation is not ready to take over.
Draper was polite:
No president since Ronald Reagan has won the presidency as convincingly, twice over, as Obama did — but those victories papered over an extraordinary decline in his party that became suddenly unignorable on Nov. 9, 2016. The Democratic National Committee today is an understaffed, demoralized bureaucracy. It has raised less than half of what its Republican counterpart has taken in so far this year. The "extraordinary decline" in Obama's party is because he led them into the dead end of Marxism.
The Democratic Party is synonymous with defeat.
Loser talk of overturning the election in the Electoral College was followed by loser talk of overturning the election by not accepting the results in Congress.
Which was followed by loser talk of overturning the election by using the emoluments clause.
Which was followed by loser talk of overturning the election with the 25th Amendment.
Which was followed by loser talk of overturning the election by impeachment.
All these attempts ended in failure.
Every failure further defined the party as a group of losers.
Who wants to be in that group?
From Draper:
By the end of Obama’s presidency, the Democratic Party had lost nearly a thousand seats in state legislatures across America. It had forfeited its majority in both the House and the Senate. A mere 16 of the nation’s 50 governors were Democrats — and that number dwindled to 15 in August, when Jim Justice of West Virginia announced with a grinning Donald Trump at his side that he, too, had decided to become a Republican. The Party of Jackson and Kennedy is now the Party of McGovern, Mondale and Hillary.
The media does not help matters by belittling and ridiculing President Trump.
From Susan B. Glasser in the New Yorker:
On the morning of October 5th, President Trump was on one of his Twitter rants from the White House, denying as “fake news” an NBC report that his Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, had called him a “moron” and threatened to resign. Elsewhere in Washington, the drama over whether Tillerson was actually on his way out threatened to overwhelm other news stories for a second straight day. But, when I arrived at the townhouse of Stanley Greenberg, the veteran Democratic strategist, on Capitol Hill, later that morning, it was not the distractions of the Trump White House that had him worked up. Greenberg was still fuming about Hillary Clinton. So the reader reads that President Trump is a moron, and then the reader asks himself: What sort of idiot loses to a moron?
From Glasser:
Greenberg and other prominent Democrats still furious about last year’s Clinton campaign think it’s entirely possible, unless the Party figures out, and fast, a way to tackle the problem that sealed Clinton’s fate in 2016: how to appeal to the disaffected white working-class voters who provided Trump’s unlikely win a year ago.Yes, the party thought it did not need white people -- and jettisoned white working-class voters sometime in the 1970s. After Reagan won three consecutive elections (Bush 41's win in 1988 reflected Reagan's presidency, not Bush 41's abilities) H. Ross Perot siphoned enough white working-class voters to elect Bill Clinton.
After Obama's election and re-election, Democrats ignored white working-class voters entirely.
Democrats ignored the Tea Party Surprise in 2010. Demographics were on their side, they told themselves.
Soon, white people would be a plurality in the United States.
What they overlooked is that won't happen for another 30 years.
That's a long time to be out of power.
That's a long time to sit in second place.

ReplyDeleteGreat column once again, Don. The best columnist in America is a blogger, who knew? LOL.
ReplyDeleteThis is what kills me with the Donks - "oh no, how can we appeal to the group of people we abandoned with glee in a very public way?"
Yeah that's a tough one. Maybe "figuring out how to appeal to them" is not the real problem there, Einsteins.
Now we have an email saying white males are not welcome at the DNC.
DeleteSee ya, wouldn't wanna be ya! I second Jeff's comment. Big D Rules!
DeleteJohnston is turnig over in his grave sooooooooooooooooooo barry can kiss hin "JENNY"..
DeleteThanks.
ReplyDeleteZippy was charming? Coulda fooled me. I guess that's why people started tuning out of his speeches in 2010.
ReplyDelete"No president since Ronald Reagan has won the presidency as convincingly, twice over, as Obama did"
Consider the fact there is ample reason to believe both were stolen.
Consider that the financial help for the opposition was tied up in knots by the IRS…
DeleteAnd if he spied on Trump, did he spy on Romney?
Just to name two likely ways of an infinite number of weaponized media and government agencies.
I've always told my kids that cheaters cheat themselves most of all. Just desserts for Democrats. Hope it only gets worse...
And if it hadn't been for Hillary's incompetence it would have happened again. We know they flipped New Hampshire (including the Senate race), and we have one of Hillary's staff on video describing how they did it in other elections and how they planned to do it again. Cleaning up our elections should have been job one.
DeleteWhen you said both of them I initially thought you meant Reagan too.
DeleteThe dems put all their eggs in a basket with egg shaped holes in it.
ReplyDeleteThough they may be starting to understand the problem, there's nothing they can do to fix it. They've committed to the "Vote for us or you're a racist" strategy. They can't go back- their base won't let them.
ReplyDeleteThe rest of us will never vote for a Dem for the rest of our lives.
DeleteThat's me, Sam!
DeleteObama lost his true popularity early on but such is the power of PC even today that the myth he was always so still floats around like the gas bubble it really was. It derives it's longevity from the same inflated polling lies used on Trump. The reality of an on the ground voter's will to abandon His party is why the self absorbed New Yorker clown was surprised by the concern of the Clinton professionals after her loss. To the frivolous press lady rumors about someone insulting a man she despised explained so much!
ReplyDeleteBasically people lied to the pollsters because they thought someone was listening in. Or perhaps they did like Him as the character he portrayed so well, a sincere but generous liar unfairly attacked by insincere and selfish ones.
It is far from clear that the Republicans will benefit from the Democratic slide. 18 will say a lot.
"how to appeal to the disaffected white working-class voters who provided Trump’s unlikely win a year ago."
ReplyDelete.
Easy peasy. Just call all the whites who dont vote D, racists ams white supremacists.
.
"After Obama's election and re-election, Democrats ignored white working-class voters entirely."
.
Hardly true, kind sir. Democrats stuck their fingers in the eyes of white working class voters every chance they had.
"Just call all the whites who dont vote D, racists ams white supremacists." And, to top it off make sure to call them a"basket of deplorables".
DeleteAnd to top that off, make them unredeemable deplorables.
DeleteSo very true. They are still at it. Sticking it to and/or belittling the white middle class workers at every turn.
DeleteCharming?
ReplyDeleteYeah, I threw up a tiny bit when I read that.
DeleteThe only thing Obama has is a charmed eloquence when he speaks. It's the only thing I give him credit for, period. People wanted to believe he was painting a picture that was good. I couldn't stand to listen to him. Once in a great while I'd force myself, just to remember what the masses were exposing themselves to.
Delete30 years is not long enough.-- BJ54
ReplyDeleteObama had a lot of help in ruining the Donk party. The cultural war over identity politics that the radical Leftists in the party started years ago finally backfired on them. The sclerotic heads of the party have no way plan for stopping the powerful leftward lurch of its voting base, which will end up costing them more elections in the future. If the party wants to be competitive, it Needs to rid the party of its most radical leftist jihadists. I don't think they have the will to do that yet. A few more electoral drubbings could give them the sense of urgency they need to reform the party, but by then their most radical leftist supporters may abandon the party entirely. The left is far more fractured than the right these days.
ReplyDeleteMy hope is die hard Dems get this and not just blame their predecessors. Actually I'd much rather see the while party fail and the Repubs split.
Delete"What sort of idiot loses to a moron?"
ReplyDeleteHow many sorts of idiots are there? - Elric
Hey, hey, lots of loose talk about idiots here. We were an honored profession once. Someone has to point out the obvious, and we haven't had much competition this century.
DeleteYet the Stupid Party in Congress is determined to lose by not repealing Obummercare which is the main reason they were elected to Congress. And then we have people like Johnny Maverick McRINO who is doing everything in his power to sabotage Trump's presidency. - GOC
ReplyDeleteEver noticed that you are not the majority of people who elected people to Congress? You're probably not in the majority of voters on November 8, 2016, either. Think about what that means.
DeleteP.S. Speaking of RINOs, if Trump ain't a RINO then nobody is a RINO.
I believe Trump WAS a RINO a couple of years ago. But not anymore. Not after the way he's been treated by the Left/Democrats.
DeleteDonna Brazile claims the Clintons were allowed to take control of the DNC a year before the primaries. Rush today said that was because Obama left the DNC $24 million in debt by refusing to turn over donations.
ReplyDeleteSucks to be a dishonest, greedy, totalitarian marxist AKA democrat.
Obama and the Dems with their demand for mass immigration, legal and illegal, along with weaponizing the US governemnt against businesses and political opponents, coupled with their truly anti-Americanism, has seen to it that they fulfilled Obama's promise of fundamentally transforming America, just not in the way they envisioned.
ReplyDeleteMake toilet legislation a centerpiece of your presidency, and your party commits sewercide.
ReplyDeleteNo matter how much power socialists win, they still will always lose. Their very ideology requires they posess comic-book superpowers, such as the psychic superpowers to instantly see through any lie and the precognitive superpowers to predict future trends with 100% accuracy. No matter how many movies they make to convknce themselves they have these superpowers, the reality is that they never will, and their whole system inevitably collapses as a result.
ReplyDeleteObama left office as one of the most popular US Presidents in history, polls show.
ReplyDeleteUh huh.
Are these the same pollsters that told us Hillary was viewed as the smartest, most admired woman in America? The same ones that said Hillary would win the Presidency in a landslide?
Yeah, they are.
Hillary Clinton is the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human being I've ever known in my life.
DeleteHey everybody, we got a hermit over here!
DeleteI see what you did there! (I've used that myself once in a while.)
DeleteAnonymous at 6:08 sounds like Hanover Fist sticking up for Captain Sternn in the movie "Heavy Metal," but left out Hillsry being full of the milk of human kindness. - Elric
DeleteThe very same pollsters who tell us Trump's numbers are the lowest ever recorded! Who believes anything lefty media say?
DeleteAs long as Democraps blame and demonize whites for all that ails "minorities", they will be considered my mortal enemies. Immigration HAS TO STOP because we now know that the Democrap leftists want whites to be discriminated against while they plot our disappearance.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree
DeleteThe answer for the return of Democrat power is simple, but they won't do it. Simply hold the Clintons responsible for their felonious behavior. Indict, try, convict, and jail them. Prove to the American people that no one is above the law, because right now the message is that if you're part of our governing elite, the laws don't apply to you. Stop covering up and letting them get away with (probably literally) murder, and the tables will turn overnight.
ReplyDeleteIntriguing, but I'd bet not. To do that would be a tacit admission of how much all of them have been lying the last 25 years. The number of people who would admire them for their come-to-Jesus moment would be greatly outnumbered by the people furious at having been hornswoggled.
DeleteI remember the Left being so mad in 2004 that they were sure they would take out Bush (because we're mad!), especially since he hadn't really won in 2000, but was "selected not elected".
ReplyDeleteLiberals have been living in a fantasy land since their "come the revolution" days in the '60s and I hope they remain in it because I'm still not tired of you-know-what-ing.
Great article, thank you. But you should not ascribe Clinton's 1992 victory to Perot's siphoning off votes. To win, Bush would have needed 102 electoral votes more than he got. That would have meant winning not just Georgia (which he barely lost), but also states like Maine, Connecticut, and Iowa, where Clinton's margin of victory was much more substantial. It is unlikely in the extreme that, all else being the same, had Perot not been on the ballot in 1992, Bush would have defeated Clinton
ReplyDeleteLet's talk about the damage to the Republican Party Trump has caused. Corker and Flake for example. He ruined their chances for re-election! Now other Republicans will have to replace them. (hahahahaha.....that's the kind of Republican destruction we need from Trump!)
ReplyDeleteStramge, Corker, Flake... let's call them "The Harbingers". :)
Delete"30 states to 19 3/4"
ReplyDeleteRemember the Maine! (Maine 2nd, that is.)
"Democrats ignored the Tea Party Surprise in 2010." And Republicans attacked them. The Stupid Party struck again.
ReplyDeleteMr. Surber, I'm hearing Yoda talk about you. "The Schadenfreude is strong with this one."
ReplyDeleteLongtime GOP activist and Trump fan here, but not convinced that the Dems will be out of power for all that long. While I don't see a "wave" building for Dem capture of Congress in 2018 (the people promoting it are the same who told us Hillary was a lock--think Rachel Maddow), I do think they have a good shot at some governorships, most notably WI, MI, OH, IL, FL, AZ, NM, ME, and NV, while GOP pickups are on the radar screen in MN, CT and possibly PA.
ReplyDeleteThe unpleasant truth for the Dems is that they are drifting to become an explicitly non-white party, and the internal DNC "white males need not apply" e-mail re tech recruiting confirms this. The buzz on possible 2020 contenders focuses on all the legacy white Dems all in their 70s or older--Warren, Sanders, Biden, because there ARE no possibilities among whites younger than that.
Also consider the Dems aggressive moves to disown their own history: no more Jefferson-Jackson Day dinners (the former only founded the whole thing, after all), Jackson replaced on the $20 bill by Harriet Tubman (who, from some accounts I've read, was a Republican), the effort at Princeton to rename its Woodrow Wilson School of Government, and even the revisionism surrounding the sainted FDR over WWII Japanese internments.
Meanwhile, on the other side, white America is finally losing its patience with the race card, and will continue to do so in the future since remaining white liberals are not replacing themselves and what will be left in the future will be significantly more race conscious. Hence Donald Trump thanks to MI, WI, PA, OH, NC, FL. Things are gonna get ugly.

DeleteI don't believe that too many states will go Democrat in their gubernatorial elections. The whole "sanctuary state" thing is just something that people (those with brains, anyway) want no part of.
DeleteObama was President of the media. they elected him. As long as their readers continue to believe the tripe they dole out the more their party will be damaged. Freedom of the press to write all the lies they want, and freedom of their readers to be as ignorant as they want. Is this a great country, or what?
ReplyDeleteI think it was GamerGate that killed the Hildabeest.
ReplyDeleteBUT... DOES ANY OF THIS MATTER?
ReplyDeleteI have been thinking long and hard why the Dems are moving so far left, so fast. I have not heard a single commentator discuss it. I believe it is because the party leadership believes it has won the cultural war, and holding elected office is no longer as important as it was to achieve the ends you want.
Breitbart famously noted that politics is downstream of culture. When you control the culture you control politics.
It no longer matters that a majority or even large majority believes X, Y, or Z--IF no one wants to speak out against X Y or Z for fear of losing their job, their family, etc.
The Left is now, IMO, firmly in control of the culture. People are afraid to speak out, bureaucrats control much of DC, the intelligence agencies have been weaponized, etc.
The rest of us normals, and our kids, are screwed. I hope I am wrong. I do not think I am.
It was Obama's intention to destroy the United States. Destroying the dem party was just an unintended consequence. A happy one at that.
ReplyDeleteThat's all hogwash, Obama made America great, that's where Trump coined his phrase ........ great again. Am all laughing here wondering where the American moral cokmpass is all pointing at. The difference between your trump and Obama is like day and night but you all chose the night and say it's lighter and clearer.. smh
ReplyDeleteAnother d..k wad
DeletePaul Kimeli: My sincere condolences regarding your ignorance. GO TRUMP!!!
DeleteOld age is destroying the Democratic Party. Like the Soviet Communist Party in 1980, the old guard is dying off and they can't find younger leaders dumb enough to parrot Marxist propaganda yet smart enough to run a country.
ReplyDeleteObama was "smart enough" only thanks to affirmative action. A white man of his abilities would have difficulty holding a minimum-wage job. He accomplished little, but his election encouraged Democrats to fly into the box canyon of being the anti-white party.
Oh, but they'll win when whites become a minority in thirty years, assuming their Asian exploitees don't wake up and switch sides. The way the USA is hemorrhaging wealth, it's highly unlikely to exist in its current form in thirty years.
Another beauty, Don. 350 yards down the middle of the fairway. You crushed it bro'. Nicely played!
ReplyDelete"Soon, white people would be a plurality in the United States.
ReplyDeleteWhat they overlooked is that won't happen for another 30 years."
This is not inevitable. The current trend is not irreversible.
Are Democrats really in that bad of shape?
ReplyDeleteIf TRUMP wasn't our nominee, I bet Hillary beats everyone candidate in the Republican Party! Democrats would probably have the majority in the Senate, TRUMP had coattails, he dragged alot of Senators to wins!
"....The Party of Jackson and Kennedy is now the Party of McGovern, Mondale and Hillary...."
ReplyDeleteWell, Don, at least you got that part correct. By the way, the dems have no problem being the party of McGovern, Mondale, Hillary (if she had won), or even the party of Joe Stalin (FDR's pal).
They are just upset that they lost; that's it.
Otherwise your article is total baloney.
Who thinks that if Obama could once again run for President, that the democrats would not all trip over themselves and wet their undies supporting that POS, hate-America-firster?
If Michelle "it's been a struggle" Obama declares she will run for prez, you watch all the dems fall in behind her.
What a team, Michelle "it's been a struggle," and the Barack HUSSEIN Ocommie as her top aid and/or VP.
Just as hard core Nazi's STILL love Hitler and just as commies still love Stalin - despite the fact that these two tyrants murdered millions and essentially destroyed their nations - democrats WORSHIP Obama and would all over again if given the opportunity.
Why?
Because he is black, because he is a leftist, and because he hates EVERYTHING about the USA (as proved by his actions);
Because he represents EVERYTHING that the dems truly believe.
He is an other worldly GOD - in every sense of the word - for all democrats.
The democrats are merely pissed off that they do not have another "OBama" to step into that SOBs shoes that would lead them to nirvana. And they are also really, really upset that Trump is president.
The dems have finally revealed what they truly are; a "new" version of Bolsheviks. They are like a cancer that continually metastasizes, that never really goes away. They are just re-grouping.
The fact is that the most popular "democrat" today is Bernie Sanders - a Socialist who honeymooned in Moscow while the successors of Stalin (i.e., his aides and abettors who were on the front lines carrying out Stalin's genocide) were ruling over the USSR.
The dems, ideologically agree 1000% with Bernie.
But ONLY because Bernie is not officially a democrat, and only because they were all in for the criminal Hillary - they chose not to support him. BUT THEY WISHED THEY COULD.
The dem's realize that the $$$$ will once again re-fill their coffers (think Soros, Steyer, Silicon Valley, Hollywood, Wall Street, the media) once they find another Obama or a clone of Bernie or Bernie himself he "officially" becomes a democrat.
Their "disarray" , they realize, is temporary. The will always WORSHIP Barack Hussein.
His "destruction" of their party was, well, an excusable "excess," a slight unavoidable error , that was necessary to achieve nirvana.
You have to crack a few eggs to make an omelette.
By the way, when Hillary "won" New Hampshire during the primary, despite losing the popular vote there, well, ..... any moron could see the fix was in. EVERYBODY knew it back then!!!
This book by Brazile is merely the dems crooked, lying ways to deflect their mass conspiracy to defraud Bernie.
Just like Stalin altered photos to remove those he had arrested and murdered by the NKVD, the dems are now in the process of "removing" Hillary from their ruling Supreme Soviet.
In the eyes of the dems, Obama did no wrong. He is their perfect GOD. Any dem who believes their party was "destroyed,' blames Hillary (but ONLY because she lost !!!).
Very valid points. What the Dems fail to grasp is that the ethnic group that makes up the plurality in their prized "demographic shift," (i.e., Latinos) tend to be family-focused, religious, entrepreneurial, and fiscally conservative. These are not qualities that bode well for the Dems as that population moves into middle age. If the GOP (or Trump, with or without the GOP) is able to reset the conversation on immigration and eliminate that "wedge" issue, the DNC could find itself irrelevant in thirty years.
ReplyDeleteI find it interesting the author mentions Obama left office as one of the most popular in American history. My question, "Is this survey from the same source that said Hillary would win the 2016 Presidential election?"
ReplyDeleteEveryone I EVER talked to thought Obama was destroying America, and I for one was extremely depressed when he "won" (I strongly feel voting fraud was involved)a second term. Everything he did was lousy (i.e: "Cash for Clunkers" "Fast and Furious" etc)
Yes... I HEAR he was a favored president, but I have doubts of the veracity of that statement. Just say'n...
agree with you.. think he was a favored president by the snowflakes and freeloaders
