What Trump gets out of the deal

Politics is a lot like the stock market. The bears hit last night, running scared on a rumor, and misreading "excluding the wall" as the wall will not be built.

Being bullish, I read it as an admission by Democrats that the wall is non-negotiable. Off the table. President Trump has the authority to build the wall, and he will.

From the Daily Caller just now: "House Agrees To $1.6 Billion For Border Wall."

This was what was meant by "excluding the wall" because President Trump told them the wall was non-negotiable. Show some faith, OK? He did not seek election to sell you out.

But the bears ran wild today.

Breitbart News -- which is morphing into Steve Bannon's Personal Department of Perpetual Publicity -- hopped all over it: "Report: Trump Caves on DACA, Wants ‘Quick’ Amnesty for 800K Illegal Aliens."

It is marketing, not journalism.

From Breitbart:
In a meeting with establishment politicians from the Problem Solvers Caucus and the Blue Dog Coalition, President Trump signaled a full-fledged cave on the issue of giving amnesty to nearly 800,000 illegal aliens currently protected by an Obama-created executive immigration program.
Since Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the ultimate end to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, under which  hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens were given work permits and temporary protected status, Trump has remained unclear on whether he would stick to his anti-amnesty campaign promises or cave to the political establishment.
At his White House meeting with moderates, according to The Hill, Trump is set to choose a legislative deal that quickly legalizes the nearly 800,000 illegal aliens on DACA, without getting any pro-American immigration reforms in return.
The story is speculation.

Let us go to what The Donald said.

I do not see a cave in. He said he would end DACA -- in six months. He deliberately gave Congress time to act because he knows Congress and the courts would create a battle he cannot control.

This, he can control.

President Trump is cracking down on illegal immigration, just as he promised.

He also included the caveat that when it came to this group, he was not sure what he would do. He hedged.

That is because Trump is listening to the experts: the border patrol union.

Which brings us to what does President Trump want out of the deal?

He has authority for the wall. Democrats just got out of the way of funding it.

So the wall is not what Trump sought.

He already told you what he gets out of the deal -- when one is reached.

That tweet came 12 hours before the dinner. Tax reform for DACA reform.

This is not complicated. This is pretty easy to figure out. Trump has one goal in his presidency, and only one goal.
MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN.
Our nation is built on compromise; when you don't compromise, you wind up with Obamacare and a presidency that embarrasses an entire race of people.

Americans finally have someone negotiating for them in Washington. Black, white, Hispanic -- whatever and whoever you are, President Trump is on your side.

The bears are slow to learn this.

UPDATE: Email from Trump (he sent it to a million others, I am sure):

Friend,

There’s been a lot of noise today and a lot of rumors.

Let me set the record straight in the simplest language possible…

...WE WILL BUILD A WALL (NOT A FENCE) ALONG THE SOUTHERN BORDER OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA TO HELP STOP ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION AND KEEP AMERICA SAFE.

Apparently, liberals in Congress and the mainstream media need one more reminder that building the wall is non-negotiable.

  1. Same people set their hair on fire over Sec of State Mitt Romney, Trump meeting with Gore to 'hear him on climate change and Paris Accords,' and after the Syria bombing the '500k ground troops being sent there.'

    Hows that ground war in Syria going for us?

    If Congress gets off their butts to help illegals after openly breaking 7 years of promises to help Americans re Obamacare, good lick to them in 2018.

    Putting this in Congress' hands -- where it belongs -- is not 'good' for them, but it sure isn't bad for Trump. Only the same old NeverTrumps are saying so.

    2. Syria is Barry's war, but Trump learned the lesson many of his critics, the ones who know all and see all, didn't.

      Leaving a power vacuum is always dangerous.

      BTW, where are all those media stories on our frightful casualties?

    3. We changed the ROE that was killing our people and not stopping ISIS. I am trying to find out the changes since my grandson is heading out in the next few months in the Army and my son is in the active reserves, so it is important to me. We have had a "don't fire on them if they don't fire on us" policy so the Taliban have been organizing in the open to set up attacks as our Black Hawks hover overhead. There are videos of this available, but the MSM has ignored the ROE that called for this policy that placed our people and allies at a disadvantage.

  3. DACA is not my biggest priority. Neither is the Wall. In some ways, the Wall is what you do when you're struggling with the cultural battle.

    A lot of the country believes there should be no country. That we should just abandon our borders, declare every person in the world a US citizen and be done with it, because somebody might call them names.

    It's national and cultural suicide and we can't let them take us down with them.

    After the Defense of the Very Concept of the American Nation-State, our priorities should include:

    * interior enforcement
    * ending visa overstays
    * ending chain migration
    * real E-verify
    * ending the Lottery
    * H-1B
    * and ending the criminal conspiracy in Motor Voter, which allows states to register foreign nationals to vote, knowing that they are ineligible.

    You can build a Wall, and it certainly helps--but if we ever elect another Open Borders traitor, it will stop only jack-rabbits.

    ps; don't jump every time the #ProfessionalLiars lie professionally. The President is doing his job; don't buy the Agit-Prop.

    1. "our priorities should include"

      Yes. That and ending birthright citizenship. Those are the functional criteria against which I will be measuring Trump's deal. As crucial is the TIMING. If serious immigration reform doesn't either precede or accompany DACA amnesty...it's all just another load of DC bullsh*t and I will consider myself betrayed. BIGLY.

  4. Thank you Don. Between you, Scott Adams, and Bill Mitchell on twitter, I get all the analysis I need, and it is always right.

    The media, on the other hand ... ALWAYS wrong. I've learned to just discount everything they say, a priori, and that generally works.

    Up is down, etc.

  8. A couple of problems, Don:

    "...WE WILL BUILD A WALL (NOT A FENCE) ALONG THE SOUTHERN BORDER OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA TO HELP STOP ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION AND KEEP AMERICA SAFE."

    Unfortunately for this bit of wishful interpretation, that $1.6 billion is actually earmarked for "

    House approves spending bill with funds for Trump's border wall | TheHill http://thehill.com/homenews/house/344214-house-approves-spending-bill-with-funds-for-trumps-border-wall

    The $1.6 billion included in the House spending bill would be specifically used for a limited span of physical barriers in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas and San Diego, Calif. It would amount to 32 miles of new fencing and 28 miles of new levee wall in the Rio Grande Valley, as well as 14 miles of secondary fencing in San Diego.

    You see a wall in there? I see a few miles of fences and levees.

      I'm really quite tired of the screeching, stompyfooted, banging the spoon on the high chair tray, temper tantrum throwing three year olds on both sides.

      Read Trump's books, especially "The Art of the Deal"

      After that read Sun Tsu's "The Art of War".

      If your feeble mind can grasp both of those then perhaps you will understand what is going on. If not...well...throw your temper tantrums somewhere else.

    3. If we were really serious we would propose having two fences with with anti-personnel mines in between. Maybe Trump should propose that after everyone went bananas, compromise for a wall. What a deal.

  13. Sounds like a cave in to me. And Patrick Buchanan who is pretty astute when it comes to reading the political tea leaves, seems to think so as well. I feared Trump would, like most human beings, begin to suffer from Stockholm Syndrome after the many months of being bashed continuously. That he would do what so many in our camp do. Cross over to the other side and try to prove to them see! I can be liked by you! Just give me a chance! That Trump might be falling for it is no surprise. He DOES like to be liked. But if almost one million are allowed to stay, they will bring in millions more. Read Drudge. It's no accident that crossings are going up. Even the illegals are getting the vibe Trump has had enough of being reviled.

  14. Don't ever forget as has the media that the Dems in 1986 offered Reagan a deal to close the border if he gave an amnesty. He did, they lied and didn't. My memory is very long when it comes to lies and deceit. Close the border or at least have a law requiring it, then address DACA and those here illegally.
    The wall in Israel almost stopped terrorism in that country. India has built a wall/fence longer than ours along it's border with Bangladesh for the same reasons we must, yet little is said about that "evil" wall. Spain's enclave in North Africa has a fence like Hungary's
    A major stumbling block in the US is the Texas border where private land runs up against the Rio Grande and a wall/fence would cut the cattle ranches off from having direct access to water. This is not a small problem since the border runs 1254 miles in TX. Taking people's property or cutting off water sources is not right in this magnitude.
    One example of government actions like taking TX property and the results is that one of our most productive areas in American was the CA central valley which is again desert because the Feds cut off the irrigation flow to "save" an endangered bait fish. No one cares or hears about that, so we get more vegetables from Mexico with their proven greater risk of contamination.

  16. "If it's not deportation, and it's not amnesty, what is it?"
    It's called Parole. Release of someone (from a sentence, in this case deportation) on promise of good behavior. It could be a type of indefinite status, allowing privilege to stay and work, go to school, etc., but not have the benefits of citizenship or permanent residence (green-card style).
    Not a path to citizenship.
