No, Trump did not cave

The media crashed and burned last night over a Democratic Party lie about a deal on amnesty for some illegal aliens.

After a dinner with the president, Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer said, “We agreed to enshrine the protections of DACA into law quickly, and to work out a package of border security, excluding the wall, that’s acceptable to both sides.”

There is no deal. The president said so this morning. Pelosi and Schumer jumped the gun because they hope to gain leverage in a situation in which the president holds the trump card.

Everybody who panicked about this Fake News was a fool.


That includes Representative Steve King, a Republican from Iowa, whom I like.

A lie travels around the world before the truth puts its shoes on.

People who railed against President Trump for "caving" made two mistakes.

  1. They believed Pelosi and Schumer.
  2. They believed the media.

Me? I trusted President Trump.

I read their statement and knew it was a lie, or to be kind, an embroidery of the truth.

The reason tip-off were the words, "excluding the wall."

Of course the wall was excluded.

It's off the table.

President Trump has authorization for it. A 2006 law made it so. He is not going to relinquish that authority.

But there is no Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals law. It does not exist. DACA is an executive order, at best a blanket use of prosecutorial discretion.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions called it as unconstitutional.

Trump let the Pelosi-Schumer lie slide until this morning. He literally lost no sleep over it because their lie helps him in negotiations, and that is what they are doing: negotiating.

The only agreement they came to was what to talk about.

He made it plain to them that the wall is not negotiable.

Today, he tweeted:
"No deal was made last night on DACA. Massive border security would have to be agreed to in exchange for consent. Would be subject to vote. The WALL, which is already under construction in the form of new renovation of old and existing fences and walls, will continue to be built."
Got that? The wall is off the table.

Pelosi and Schumer's bargaining position is weak. They are in the minority.

But they do have a position, and they seem to be surrogates for Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell. Either man could stop a floor vote on any agreement

They won't.

This is a do-nothing Congress. Donald Trump's is a very active presidency. Contrast and compare. Congress needs leadership. Trump will provide it.

Meanwhile, anyone who said he caved on the wall is a fool.

  2. You're wrong, Don. Trump is damned by his own tweets on this issue, he was giving away the farm until he got slammed by (real) conservatives. Frankly he won't have my support in the future if he hands unfettered amnesty to any illegal aliens, because if he does we'll get millions more illegals that way.

    1. You can certainly read into something that doesn't exist. Negotiating can be in public as with the Democrats or in private as with businesses. Politics makes people exaggerate their position to get a leg up. And the Democrats lie when the truth would do as with the Reagan amnesty in 1986 to get the Dems to authorize closing the border. Reagan did what he promised, the Dems deceived him and the border was NOT ever closed.

While I was nailing two pieces of wood together and painting them blue and calling it an airplane, Donald Trump was teasing Mayor (of the greatest city in the world) Ed Koch about a 7 year old reconstruction project (the Woolsley skating rink) outside The Donald's office window. I'm eight years younger than Mr Trump (I still have that blue thing somewhere). I watch CBS News (out of NYC) often and shake my head at how bad this administration is doing, and when it's going to crash and burn, And then I read 'the rest of the story' here and at other alternative sources and remember that Mr Trump has been completely immersed in politics from the very beginning of his business career, and can handle any of the 'prairire dust' that is tossed at him. Thank you, Mr Surber.

What about the Republican rank and file, who do support Trump, and who've been mad as hell at the party's supposed "leadership" for their opposition/foot-dragging to him (and making plans to primary them)?     It must be so hard for sellouts like Don to watch this farce of a presidency after doubling-down on it, placing their credibility on the line for it, and trying to cash in off it. How much longer can they keep spinning rolling over for the Democrats as victory before they call it quits?

  8. Big fan, Don, but you're wrong on this one. Read his tweets and his own words this morning. We're getting DREAM Act, including citizenship--and not just for the 800k DACA recipients--in return for "border security". No interior enforcement, no RAISE Act, no wall.

    I'm just sick and tired of this constant stream of lies coming from the media. Don't know what else to do: I've already cut the cable, canceled my newspapers & magazine subscriptions- but it's impossible to avoid the latest "the sky is falling" madness without becoming a hermit living in a cave underground!

    It's just depressing when the same asininity spreads even to "alternate" outlets such as Breitbart. There's just no escaping the false narrative, it's everywhere. Pervasive!

    And it's damned dispiriting, that's for sure.

    The GOPe hates Trump and refuses to deal with hime, claiming that they're too ideologically pure. So, he shows them that they're Congressmen and he's President and he call deal with the other half instead.

    He put the ball in their court and it's been so long sense they've scored with it that they don't know what to do.

Whereas actually they've been paid to fix the game, like the Chicago Black Sox, and so Trump cutting a deal with the "other team" is the best thing to happen to them - they can lose as they wanted, and still claim they were trying!

  13. The trouble is Trump has to be absolutely clear the wall gets funded with DACA. Because if he gives up this leverage, he will never get the Dems or the GOPe to do it.

    I would also like funding for tracking visa overstays (which is just as bad of a problem than crossing the border).

    I appreciate Don S. optimism and I hope he is right (he usually is on DJT). But there are plenty of credible reports (not from NeverTrumpers or Democrats) that Trump agreed not to link the wall funding to DACA. That would be bad.

  14. The House just passed a real budget for the first time in years. It's too much, but it does fund the Wall. The point is, Donald Trump is getting them to do their jobs again. He's a good influence on Reprobate Washington.

  16. This was written at another site but should be shared here: I wrote this in response to a comment yesterday but I think it bears
    repeating here: Trump is not ambiguous in his statements. People are no
    longer taught grammar. Here goes: Look at what he said by what he said.
    This is an analysis from someone
    with a PhD whose dissertation was based on rhetoric and grammar, old
    school, not current "the rhetoric of comic books" stuff. Remember, Trump
    is old enough to have had a legitimate semi-classical education, not
    the indoctrination grammar is what you want it to be school. "No dead
    was made." This is a declarative statement. "Massive border security
    would have to be agreed to in exchange for consent." This is subjunctive
    mood, or contrary to fact mood. It shows he knows this will not likely
    happen. You know the reasons and so does he. "Would be subject to vote."
    Still subjunctive mood and remember, he can't stop a vote except by
    veto that cannot be overruled; if it can be overruled, that is not his
    fault. You are reading into this subjunctive mood a declarative
    statement of intent that does not exist. What this tweet shows is that
    the Democrats have lied and were reading into what they wanted the same
    things you are reading into the tweets because of what you do not want.
    Stay calm. Remember: This is one of the reasons why Trump has been able
    to get things done -- his enemies show what they really are going to do.
    He may not succeed, but that is because he does not have absolute
    power. What you are going to get is the best that he can accomplish with
    the deep state against him. It is up to the people to vote out the
    denizens of the deep state who are entrenched in power. Remember: If you
    have the intelligence agencies working against you, as facts seem to be
    showing as they come out, do you really think that the path to better
    government for the people is going to be easy? Especially since Trump
    cannot get his candidates voted upon by Congress because of
    foot-dragging and obstruction. If nothing else, Trump has been exposing
    for us a confirmation of all of our suspicions about the corruption of
    the government, for the government, by the government against the people
    -- he is legally constrained to act within the set-up and that is what
    he is doing. It is up to the voters to change the system that has been
    changed by the infiltration of subversives and crooks.

  18. Sure a lot of "Trump supporters" here today spouting the same talking points. I thought the Journolist listserver was kaput. I guess I was wrong, or there's a new magic talking-point-distributor in town.

    That said, I sure wish Ryan and McConnell would get in front of microphones and cameras at least as often as Nanny and Chuckie.

    First off; My first reaction to the Dim-O's DACA and Border Wall statements was, "No damned way!" But I intelligently decided to wait awhile before expressing my opinion.

    I am so glad that Don explained his "24 Hour Rule" months ago. It has taught me to also have a little patience and wait a bit before making an opinion and inserting my foot when opening my mouth.

    So, once again Surber's "24 Hour Rule" proves it's mettle and has exposed the liars and vilifiers for the buffoons they both are.

    I strive to be a 4-Season Patriot and I'm sticking with Trump for the long haul.

    1. Oh, for heaven's sake. Democrat lies about Trump and Russia, or Nazis, or whatever, don't faze us by now. But when you have a tweet from Trump himself about how we can't deport all the Dreamers, and that they're such upstanding folks, etc., then yes, there is what to worry about. The more so because so far we've suffered far too many disappointments (Sessions being the worst of many).

    2. Perhaps President Trump is giving the Democrats enough rope to hang themselves with. The big question is what will the majority party - the GOPe do? Will they hang themselves, too? By throwing this hot potato back into the lap of Congress he is giving the electorate the chance to put pressure on the Congress critters to do the will of the electorate. Write your Representatives and Senators and hold their feet to the law, the Constitution, and the will of the people. Monday, September 18 is Constitution Day. Let's show Congress that We, the People haven't forgotten what it's all about. Light up the switchboards, fill up their e-mail inboxes, and make them hire temps to open all the letters.
