From Russia, truly with love

The Russian jet that crashed on Christmas included 64 members of the renowned Alexandrov Ensemble among its 92 passengers and crew. None survived.

"God Bless America" was written by Irving Berlin, a native of Russia, whose family escaped the pogroms. Here is his rendition in 1968.

  1. I had not heard of this. Thanks, Don.

  2. He sang it with such feeling, seldom heard by American artists. Truly a tragedy that they are gone.

  3. When I was growing up in the '60s, my parents had LP records (remember them) of the famous Russian composers like Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Mussorgsky, et al. They also had records of the Red Army Band. This was height of the Cold War and my parents were hard core American patriots. But they loved music. Good music. The Alexandrov Ensemble carried on that Russian musical tradition. Takes me back.
