Never believe your own press releases

Even the ones with Chris Cillizza's byline on them.

Consider this from April 19, 2016, "Democrats are winning the Supreme Court fight over Merrick Garland. Big time."

For those too young to remember, Garland was nominated for the Supreme Court by Barack Obama.

Mitch McConnell ignored the nomination. He said the seat would remain vacant until after the next president took office.

Cillizza was excited because polls showed, increasingly, that the public wanted a vote on the matter.

"Initially, public opinion was deeply divided — largely along partisan lines, with Democrats on the side of a confirmation vote held before the end of the year and Republicans content with leaving the seat open until a new president took office. In March, opinion was moving toward the 'vote this year' option. In the poll released Monday night, a majority now believe the Senate should hold a confirmation vote on Garland this year," Cillizza wrote.

The argument was that Republicans would pay at the polls for their obstinacy.

"The movement in the polls to the Democratic view on Garland is unmistakable and will probably encourage Democrats and their affiliated groups to push even harder on GOP senators up this fall in swing states — and there are lots of them — to move off their current positions on Garland," he wrote.

But that is not how it worked. Instead, by holding up the Garland nomination, McConnell gave hope to Republicans who opposed the Trump nomination. They figured well, at least we will get a good justice out of the deal.

  1. And sending open border "protesters" to harass McConnell and his wife was a nice touch too. Always threaten and offend the "boss man" who controls critical appointments who can make your side completely defenseless. Ignore cause and effect Dems.

  2. This issue merely crystallized the logic of the Flight 93 Election essay for most of us. The nevertrumpers never got it, and likely never will. Let them stay in political and ideological limbo the rest of their lives. They deserve it.

    3. Maybe elections, but not everone has the will do to what they did on that flight.

Case in point, crazy lady went bonkers in recent flight. Going up and down the plane demanding to be let off mid flight.

She starts towards the cockpit, she is confronted.

However, she makes it to the cockpit door pounding away like the baboon she is.

Never restrained, never taken down, nada.

      No Let's Roll.

Not knocking the passengers, but we are not all Flight 93.

    4. She would not have gotten past my seat, I promise you. I swore to myself to follow the example of those on Flight 93 if the situation ever called for it. I'm old, really old. But I'm fit and strong and no push over for any age. I'm not ready to go down without a fight.

    5. As with the bad guy, so with the future.

Don’t shrink from it. Charge it.

Because it’s not that I’m old enough to be a grandfather. It’s that I’m young enough to be a grandson.

  3. Armageddon will happen in America if we do not have a red wave! We Trump voters must energize as an army this November and vote in overwhelming numbers. Democrats will impeach our great president, and take away our guns, tax cuts, abolish ICE and totally open our borders. Anarchy and violence will reign if we do not vote this November.

  4. No one should ever believe any byline from Chris Cillizza he wouldn't know the truth if it bit his butt. He doesn't have the talent, integrity, honesty or credibility to work anywhere but CNN, which require none of those factor to work there.

  6. Certainly one of the few GREAT things McConnell did. I still don't like how little he's done.
    His wife is great, too.
I still don't like how little he's done.

His problem? He gets too little done...

  7. Elections have consequences-- even the 2014 mid-terms that gave the Republicans the ability to tell Obama's nominee to pound sand.

  8. McConnell was right to leave it to the voters.

btw, Maybe the passengers knew she wouldn't get past the hardened door now.

  9. You know what makes me laugh? If Hillary had won the election, Garland still wouldn't be on the Supreme Court. You really think her press minions wouldn't have immediately started writing and saying "she won, she gets to pick, not Obama." And she would have given us a joke of a leftist even worse than the already worthless Elena Kagan.

  10. For fifty years now, conservatives have been detailed to damage-control. Trying to douse the fires that the leftists keep setting.

With Trump running the show now, for the first time, the fire ain’t bigger than the man with the hose.
