How the NRA hiring Oliver North helps Trump

The National Rifle Association has a history of celebrity presidents. General Ambrose Burnside was the first. Ulysses S. Grant served six years after his presidency ended. Then there was Charlton Heston.

Oliver North was selected today.  At 74, the retired Marine lieutenant colonel certainly is capable to handle the executive chores associated with the job.

But he also serves the main purpose: to be the target that the NRA's enemies shoot at, and miss.

Consider CNN's reaction.

"Oliver North, the Fox News contributor and central figure in the Iran-Contra scandal, will be the National Rifle Association's new president, the group announced Monday," CNN reported.

The network failed to mention his service in Vietnam in which he earned the Silver Star, a Bronze Star Medal with Combat V, and two Purple Hearts.

But there were clips about Iran Contra.

NPR's lead paragraph was similar.

Paragraph 8 said, "North served in Vietnam, where he earned combat medals. In the '80s, he was an aide in the Reagan administration and was a central player in the U.S. government's operation to secretly sell weapons to Iran and use the funds to support anti-communist Contras in Nicaragua."

There you go. He went to Vietnam and won some medals. Stolen Valor is evil, but Forgotten Valor also is wrong.

But note what happened. Suddenly all these Fake News sites have to explain events from more than three decades ago to two new generations. Those newbies have a big uncomfortable question to ask.
If selling arms to Iran to fight Iraq was bad, why did Obama give money to Iran and let it have nukes?
President Trump will announce the fate of the Iran deal tomorrow. Either by design or happenstance, Ollie North and the NRA just gave him cover.

  1. President Reagan reluctantly sent a few weapons to Iran in hopes of getting tortured CIA Station Chief Wm. Buckley released from Hezbollah.

President Obama joyfully sent as uranium as he possibly could in hopes of making all Americans hostages to Iran. He sent as much cash as he thought he could get away with, money that is funding Hezbollah to this very day.

    Traitor.

  3. The NRA is in good hands with Col. North.

As an added benefit, the FakeNews media might choke on his appointment; a consummation devoutly to be wished!

  4. Since they are bringing up Iran-Contra, I will bring up Benghazi, which was a gun running operation run by Hillary and Barack. What's the difference with Iran-Contra? None. And then there was the ATF's Fast and Furious operation, a gun running scheme cooked up by Eric Holder. Every time Holder's name comes up in the future, will the media reference F&F? I'm not holding my breath.

  5. LTC North is a brilliant choice and will fulfill his duties magnificently. I recently took advantage of a special offer and added two years to my NRA membership. - Elric

  8. CNN's headline (on twitter) was along the lines of Worlds' most infamous gunrunner becomes NRA president.

The twitter responses to it were all in the vein of:

Eric Holder is the NRA president?

    Really amusing.

  9. Wait until the facts of "Zero Footprint" are known explaining why we were in Benghazi. Obama and Clinton selling Gaddafi's arms to ISIS won't be looked on kindly. That Reid, Feinstein, Boehner, Pelosi and McConnel all signed off on it won't go down so well either.
