Name That Party: Schneiderman edition

Jane Mayer and Ronan Farrow of New Yorker began their piece on Monday night, "Eric Schneiderman, New York’s attorney general, has long been a liberal Democratic champion of women’s rights, and recently he has become an outspoken figure in the #MeToo movement against sexual harassment."

They identified his party affiliation in the opening sentence of a story exposing a political scandal.

Duh.

Except that isn't how it is done in journalism. Too often journalists play the Name That Party game, in which they hide the party affiliation when a political scandal falls upon a Democrat.

Deepti Hajela of the Associated Press waited until Paragraph 12 to identify him. Newspapers seldom publish the 12th paragraph of a story. Most readers stop reading well before that.

Fox Business News, Bloomberg, and others ran the AP's tainted version of the truth.

CNN's story on his resignation identified his party in Paragraph 4, "Schneiderman's swift resignation, which came just hours after The New Yorker published its report, is a shocking fall from grace for a once rising star in Democratic politics. Schneiderman had cast himself as a fierce opponent and critic of President Donald Trump."

That second sentence was excellent. The sanctimonious hypocrisy of this woman beater is a large part of the story, and in fact what elevates the story from stuff they talk about on the cable channels to something people actually talk about.

I wish it were the second paragraph, not fourth.

But Associated Press could not manage to admit that Schneiderman is one of its own kind: a Democrat.

Even Atlantic monthly got his party affiliation in the second paragraph.

At some point, the Federal Election Commission should consider whether AP's political stories are in-kind campaign contributions.

  1. In a short story written in 1932 the AP is depicted as covering for Roosevelt ( "the president") after he orders a man pushed out of a window to his death in Rockefeller center. AP headquarters are still there, along with NBC and Comcast, and they still cover for Democrats. Nothing has changed, nor will it ever. Today's AP hitpiece on Trump as a reckless gambler looking to cash in on personal glory at the country's expense is just another example of where they are and will remain for good, or the revolution.

  2. On Ms. Althouse's blog I pointed out the surprising first sentence revelation of Schneiderman's party affiliation. It literally stands out because it was so damned odd. I give credit to The New Yorker, but I think this likely Farrow holding firm- he has faced a lot of resistance to his work before getting a publication to issue his work.

    1. Wow. I had not thought of that. If a conservative is a liberal who has been mugged, then welcome to the Good Side, Ronan. We have the good-looking women.

  3. Journalists take note, Farrow seems to be setting the perfect example, and cheers to him! All people ask for is fairness.

    1. Farrow has come a long way from his MSNBC debacle. Gotta give him credit.

  4. Speaking of Hide the Party, Brennan wasn't treated better than Haspel because he's a man; he was treated better because he's a party member. Comrade.
