Why we had the Parkland massacre

Charlie Kirk is a young conservative who holds Marxist professors accountable.

He is puzzled, though, as to why the government did not stop the shooter who killed 17 people at the high school in Parkland. A headline in American Prospect in 2013 explained it.

Reversing Broward County's School-to-Prison Pipeline,

The county schools had a statistical problem. Only 61% of its black students graduated, while 81% of its white students did. Robert Runcie, the incoming superintendent of Florida’s Broward County Public Schools, discovered why.

"One of the first things I saw was a huge differential in minority students, black male students in particular, in terms of suspensions and arrests," Runcie told American Prospect.

School officials and the sheriff's office agreed to a solution that would fix the statistic.

Rather than change the students, Runcie and the sheriff agreed to stop punishing students.

"Broward announced broad changes designed to mitigate the use of harsh punishments for minor misbehavior at the beginning of this school year. While other districts have amended their discipline codes, prohibited arrests in some circumstances, and developed alternatives to suspension, Broward was able to do all these things at once with the cooperation of a group  that included a member of the local NAACP, a school board member, a public defender, a local sheriff, a state prosecutor, and several others," American Prospect reported in 2013.

"In early November, The Miami Herald reported that suspensions were already down 40 percent and arrests were down 66 percent. Yet these changes required years of advocacy. The hard scrabble road to Broward’s success also helps explain why zero tolerance policies have persisted."

Stop suspending kids and stop arresting kids, and guess what? The percent of students suspended or arrested drops. Brilliant.

Thus, law enforcement officials visited the shooter 30 times, knew the shooter was trouble, but did nothing because the statistic was all important.

Gordon Weekes, a public defender in Broward County, was among those who praised the program of not punishing kids for crimes or bad behavior.

"Broward is unusual because representatives from law enforcement, the district, and the community were able to agree on reform, and the superintendent approved it. 'In dealing with the previous administration, people were afraid to look at disparate impact issues,' says Weekes. '[Runcie] was not backing away from it.'  The new superintendent released the data and acknowledged that the problem had a racial dynamic. 'It’s a problem all over the country,' Runcie says, 'and Broward is no exception.'" the American Prospect story ended.

The program was a success.

The data all shows that.

17 people are dead?

That is the Second Amendment's problem, Sheriff Scott Israel said, and not the school or the sheriff's office that failed to stop the shooter when they had the chance.

As Stalin told U.S. ambassador Averill Harriman, "The death of one man is a tragedy, the death of millions is a statistic."

The media chose to go to war with Donald John Trump in 2017 rather than accept him as president.

The media chose poorly.

From Leslie Eastman's review at Legal Insurrection:
Surber, a recovering journalist with over 30 years of experience, has been cataloging the #FakeNews that has been regularly offered as serious analysis of President Donald Trump’s actions, policies, and opinions. He has brought his enormous collection together in the longest, most serious book he has yet written: Fake News Follies of 2017.
Fake News Follies of 2017 is available on Kindle and in paperback.

Autographed copies are available. Email me at DonSurber@GMail.com for details. I am including a "director's cut." I will give you the original Chapter 1 that I cut because while the chapter was amusing, it really had nothing to do with the Fake News Follies of 2017.

    2. "The program was a success." The state and county officials failed the people. It's easy to meet standards when the standard is
      worthless.

  2. Arrests dropped 66% but crime continued unabated. St Skittles was caught with stolen goods but no report. The Conservative Treehouse covered that adnausium. Crime + Nonpunishment = more crime. A lesson liberals are incapable of learning.

    1. Exactly. Now that Proggie heads are on the chopping block, expect this story to die in 3, 2, 1...

  5. The disparate outcome model is the preferred way for race-baiters to get their charges off the hook without having to do any meaningful introspection as to why they are so disproportionately affected. Of course it was right up Obama's, Holder, et al, alley.

  6. Don,

Here's the problem right here. You wrote:

"[There] was a huge differential in minority students, black male students in particular, in terms of suspensions and arrests," Runcie told American Prospect...

"Rather than change the students, Runcie and the sheriff agreed to stop punishing students."

    Do you see it yet?

    Incompetent data analysts.

If the problem was a disproportionate number of discipline incidents for minority kids than for whites, they chose the wrong path.

To address these kinds of statistical imbalances, you have to do this:

    1. Quit enforcing discipline on minority kids.
    2. Enforce discipline on white kids with vigor.

They should'a landed on Cruz with both feet and, when questioned, simply responded that he was a "white Hispanic."

    Problem solved.

  7. The USA system of education and the schools in it lack freedom, that is what’s wrong with them. That is why students keep shooting the system up and its leaders do not protect it or those in it. No one likes the system. It stinks.

    1. Indeed. It doesn’t measure disparate impact on the victims of this liberal fiasco.

  10. Just remember that it is more important how things look (statistics) than how things are (thug crime not solved). Fudging the numbers actually makes it worse.

  11. In Venezuela children are dying of starvation. How does the socialist regime deal with this? It is now illegal to say that starvation is a cause of death for death certificates. Problem solved. The logic here is the same. Kids are failing to graduate and are engaging in bad behavior. Just refuse to officially aknowledge the truth. People on the left would say that what is happening in Venezuela couldn’t happen here. Ideas have consequences. The American left thinks they can hold the same ideas and have different outcomes than anywhere else where the ideas failed. We aren’t immune. I

  13. BTW, graduation rates are higher now.Miami and Broward public schools’ graduation rates continue to rise

The overall graduation rate for BCPS, which includes innovative District high schools and charter schools, is 81 percent. This is the highest graduation rate for BCPS since Florida adopted the Federal Uniform Graduation Rate method in 2010/11. ...
Black (75 percent), Hispanic (83 percent) and white (87.3 percent) students improved their graduation rates. The graduation rate gap between black students and white students also decreased by 3.2 percentage points.

    More graduates, more deaths perhaps.

    1. I am guessing that teachers didn't suddenly discover new teaching methods that actually help students learn *cough* (common core) *cough* I am wondering just how far the standards have been lowered. Can many of these kids do math at even a 9th grade level after graduation?
